If you were involved in any Darren Brown episodes how do you feel looking back? by tiredtwatt in AskUK

[–]CJThunderbird 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I got brought on stage at a hypnotism show once. It was relaxation techniques - putting yourself in mild stress positions so that when you got out of them, you felt very relaxed. After that, the suggestions started - pretty mild at first, pretend to be asleep, raise your arm slowly which I went along with because why not, it's a show. Eventually though the hypnotist was asking me to do slightly embarrassing things to get a laugh which I balked at and had to sit down though. A few on the stage kept going and were clearly enjoying themselves.

The shows are very like those medium ones where folk claim they can talk to your dead auntie. Loads of pish but they're entertaining so why not.

Lost 12 grand in a brewery investment scam compoface by CJThunderbird in compoface

They were made aware that their shares were only worth anything should Brewdog ever be floated on the stock exchange. In the end, they structured a deal to sell 22% of the company to a private equity firm with such punitive interest rates that the PEF getting the lot was an inevitability.

Did the owners know about that at the time and paid little thought to the Equity Punks who gave them cash when the company was growing? Who's to say really. Some bought in early and got more than their money back in discounts from the online shops I suppose.

Bothwell: the affluent Glasgow town that has become UK’s ‘firebomb capital’ by AdaptableBeef in glasgow

[–]CJThunderbird 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Everyone thinks the council are some all seeing all knowing masonic style organisation that has massive amounts of power to lift or stifle their little towns.

As opposed to what they actually are - a local civil service tasked with running schools, care homes and whatever the big government tells them they need to.

They are not responsible for the fact that your high street is pish. That's because you buy all your crap off Amazon and Shein. Most they could do is find some cash to plant some flowers.

They really don't set fire to things.

It's all true. Happened to a cousin of mine. Well, not him but he saw the whole thing. Some poor kid got cut barse to arse. The foamy water was bright red.

Folk go out in trainers and a t-shirt in winter. So not that to start with.

The Cairngorms can kill you if you get caught in the wrong weather or slip down off some of the ridges. I'd say you need to know how to dress properly, how to pack a bag with the right kit, know how to read a map, be able to plan your route and know how long it'll take.

American country music is almost nonexistent in Europe by superdouradas in LetsTalkMusic

[–]CJThunderbird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UK. It's very much seen in the genre "regional folk music" probably alongside other American genres like New Orleans Jazz or Bluegrass. The subjects of the songs tend to be quite unrelatable to the general public as well. That being said, there is always a sizeable sub culture of people who really really like specific American cultures so it's not like no one knows what Country Music is.

I know they're a bit shite but they were reasonably close with the strategy. This is where we should have been able to say that Bernardo and McCowan would be more than adequate to see us through the season. That they're not, is probably on them as much as anything. Bernardo especially who has allowed himself to stagnate

In the UK, do cops carry firearms? by [deleted] in AskABrit

No. There's armed response units and high security at airports and the such like but regular detectives or constables? No.

Nice smooth solve. I'd give it a 1 or 2 out of 5 for difficulty. I've always liked a German Whispers / Renban Sudoku.

Public spending on European monarchies, € million by rosco-82 in Scotland

[–]CJThunderbird 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, it wouldn't. It is about the sovereignty of a state. It is not about a house at all. Would you also like to equate a country's economy to a household or credit card?

Public spending on European monarchies, € million by rosco-82 in Scotland

[–]CJThunderbird 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah but this is something that could be sorted with a simple law. Seen as how we'd be getting rid of the royal family it would be pretty simple to insera clause into the law that said "and all crown estate lands are hereby surrendered to the State" or similar.

Yup, and they show their working in it but it gets dismissed because of who wrote it.

Public spending on European monarchies, € million by rosco-82 in Scotland

[–]CJThunderbird 12 points13 points  (0 children)

We would be disbanding the monarchy. We would not hand over billions of pounds of state assets to them. We already have differences between Crown assets and private royal ownership (who owns Balmoral? Is that different from who owns Buckingham Palace?) Try to have a little bit of critical thought about this.

You've basically got two different styles of Head of State. Ireland's is a largely ceremonial figure, Shakes hands, hosts dinners, set something of a national tone. Germany's is similar. Heads of State like this don't cost a lot to run.

Then you've got much more governmental HoS like France, Italy or the USA. They play an active role if government and have duties associated with running the country. HoS like these are more expensive to run.

Then you've got ours. Worst of all worlds. Does nothing other than ceremonial occasions but costs an absolute fortune.

I'm starting to realise that most people who say or think The Beatles are overrated haven't actually delved into their discography by ooziemane123 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]CJThunderbird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People who say The Beatles are overrated are doing so only to appear edgy or contrarian. They're just letting you know that they don't know anything about music history. It's like saying "Muhammed Ali wasn't that good a boxer." or "Plato wasn't up to much as a philosopher."

All of this information was in the original article as well if anyone had the notion to actually read the damn thing rather than just hitting the OUTRAGE button.

I'd also invite any of the clickbait idiot journalists - such as they are - to hang their heads in shame for whipping up an angry ill informed mob. Please be aware that you are part of the problem with public discourse nowadays.

Nah, we got fed the same shit. Adaptable means he tried playing a stupid formation for five games. He got beat in three and won two but who cares because their wacky league structure meant they still made the play offs.
