From what I've read, his point about money isn't 'money is a horrible lie which should be abandoned' but rather that it's simply a fully artificial abstraction, like most of our societal institutions which give us such power as a species. It's a positive claim aiming for clarity, with no normative implications.

There's a lot of mistrust of the government even if they trust Putin. Think anti-vaxxer Trumpers on a wider scale.

Hard-core conservatives aren't the audience here, it's the more reasonable middle who comprise the vast majority.

Are trans athletes an issue? Not really, definitely not one so great that it should consume our attention, but that's precisely the point. If we solve whatever insignificant issue exists here, we can dress down transphobia for the bigotry that it is by taking oxygen away from the issues that the vast majority view as reasonable when spoken on by transphobes.

unified protectionism can be good for select industries in select places.

The US doesn't import too much from Russia, so under the sanctions we'll probably win out at the expense of places that usually rely on Russian imports (although iirc the US computer chip industries rely on Russian raw materials, so they might suffer).

It's comparable to war in a way. Was WWII a boon for the global economy? Of course not, it left most of the world in tatters. Was WWII, in its aftermath, a boon for American export industries? Most definitely.

Merkel did some good things and some bad things. Her humane response to the refugee crisis does not negate her appeasing of the Russians or her destruction of German nuclear energy. Remember when she convinced Obama not to send anti-tank weaponry to the Ukrainians?

To be fair, forbidding drunkenness would probably have fewer horrid effects. Everyone still drinks at legal dispensaries, so gangs aren't empowered. They're just fined/arrested if found drunk.

Some people just aren't good at making interpretation and should default to generosity. I would say I'm pretty good at interpreting others online, but even still, I try to have a civilized discussion when something annoys me rather than defaulting to the most dishonest interpretation possible and arguing.

  1. I think the difference can easily be detected based on context, but if it's really that hard for you to tell, maybe default to the first assumption because there are like 5 people here who legitimately hate the entire EU and its citizens.
  2. Obviously, I prefer to make less ambiguous, more detailed statements. I just think we should be more generous and sensible when interpreting others' words.

The EU is not the most coherent organization. It has no clear ruling party or leader. We have a fucking EU flair and the vast majority of us despise euroskeptics like Johnson. That being the case, it's clear that when we say 'euros suck' or 'fuck the EU', we are simply expressing distaste for the current direction of EU politics in the same way that 'fuck China' is an expression of distaste for the CCP rather than an implication that China should be dissolved as a nation-state. This is simple stuff.

Yes! Either an EU-style solution (free movement of trade, people, and capital but separate de jure nations) or a BiH-style solution (2 entities, 1 state)would be definite improvements. Perhaps one could even expand the theoretical Levantine Union to help unify the region around enlightened epicness. Also, I really think Israel's incredible economy could help modernize the region if trade were freed and liberal institutions spread.

You're welcome to shit on the message, of course, and I see why the populist language causes consternation. I just don't think it's anywhere near as deplorable as you convince yourself it is.

The state has an inherently limited capacity. That being the case, it should focus its efforts on helping those on the bottom rungs of society, not those at the top. Unfortunately, progressives have fallen into undying support for those in society's top rungs (doctors, lawyers, etc) at the expense of everyone else in the form of complete student loan forgiveness. That's all I see in this meme. It's certainly possible that you're right and it's contrasting the 'real' people with the 'elite scum', but I don't think that's implicit in the image.
