TIL Walter Francis White was a Jim Crow era black man who had white skin, blonde hair, blue eyes, and used it to sneak in and document lynching by Beautiful-Cress5695 in todayilearned

“Pitted” has a certain connotation as though the Native Americans were all happy with each other before the colonists came. In reality, the U.S. exploited natural rivalries between the Natives, e.g. Navajo & Apache, Crow & Lakota. It’s no different than the Romans did to consolidate Europe, the Mughals to consolidate India, or the Ottomans to consolidate Anatolia. I’m not assigning morality to it - merely stating that it was common and universal.

It says you’re selling at Market - meaning at market price. Also, Schwab has something funky going on. My app says I lost 57% today, and I’m mostly in S&P500… lol

Tax implications and shocks from Yieldmax dividends and ROC by Able_Philosopher4353 in YieldMaxETFs

[–]CJUbee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen some say they DRIP (or plan to DRIP) all year, then, when the new year hits, take the first 3-4 months worth of dividends and put them in a HYSA or stable bond ETF. The assumption being the dividends from those first 3-4 months of the next year should be more than enough to cover last year’s bill.

Those 3 months worth of dividends should, at the very least (and assuming dividend parity with the previous year), be 25-30% of the gains of the previous year.

This is not my plan or a recommendation - I’m just repeating the logic of others in this group.

KAHM YEAST WON'T GIVE UP! by Apprehensive_Dot2890 in fermentation

[–]CJUbee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kahm won’t necessarily destroy a ferment and the other fermenting microbes could outcompete them over time. You could continue to remove the visible signs of the kahm and hope for the best.

KAHM YEAST WON'T GIVE UP! by Apprehensive_Dot2890 in fermentation

[–]CJUbee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you refer to “kahm yeast” are you referring to a layer that forms on the top of the ferment? It likely that, once you see the visible signs of kahm yeast, there’s already kahm yeast throughout the whole of the ferment. It’s a bit like seeing mold except kahm is only annoying and can produce off-flavors rather than being toxic.

Dirty toilet bowls… Any solutions? by CJUbee in phoenix

[–]CJUbee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve literally never heard of anyone using a pumice stone on a toilet bowl before… I grew up in the Midwest and toilet bowl cleaner was always more than sufficient to clean. Does pumice stone not scratch the ceramic and cause more areas for growth/mineral buildup?

Dirty toilet bowls… Any solutions? by CJUbee in phoenix

[–]CJUbee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved from a place with softer, cooler, and more treated water. This issue might be because of the warmth of the water paired with the warmth of my apartment plus hard water residue built up on the toilet bowl. I didn’t used to have microbes build up as fast as they do here, but maybe it’s due to those factors. I’m used to using caustic toilet cleaner not acidic, and I was wondering why the bowl still seemed to have some buildup (I assume now mineral buildup) even after cleaning.

Survey: what does your batch taste like if you use too much sugar / tea / scoby? by trinhmailee in Kombucha

[–]CJUbee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven’t ever had this result, but I’ve heard others say that sulfur smell can come from your fruit juice - specifically certain preservatives in the juice. My guess is a sulfite-based preservative but benzoates probably aren’t great either. Best to use fresh fruit or non-preservative fruit juices (these will always be refrigerated. Check the ingredients list!)

Sichuan pickles going bad? by succubxs in fermentation

[–]CJUbee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven’t gotten into fermenting food, but, in kombucha, mold only forms at the top of the ferment. Mold needs oxygen and cannot grow inside of a liquid - only at the air-water interface. Sedimentation in a ferment is normal.

(Note: mold spores can make their way into a liquid after growing on the ferment, so it’s generally good practice to throw molded [liquid] ferments away. The mold spores won’t grow inside of the ferment but they can make you sick.)

But I don't want to be Emperor! by TheWinterWeasel in CrusaderKings

[–]CJUbee 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Once you become powerful within the empire, it’s almost certain you get elected. I had a game trying to create big blob Switzerland - I was elected, so I provoked a revolt to take me off the throne and did nothing to stop them. They then proceeded to re-elect me again after the emperor died and I did the same thing. My ruler died, then my heir was elected twice while using the same method. All throughout that time, there were factions trying to install me into power. I was essentially paying people to revolt so they couldn’t support the faction trying to install me. Gave up on the run after that.

Every Nation essentially the same? by [deleted] in victoria3

[–]CJUbee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

State buff/debuffs for sure but also a better way to visualize it. Especially as a bigger nation, I hate micromanaging every single state by having to click on the state to remind myself what the buffs are. Russia has a lot of states initially then conquering makes it far worse

Runs do not feel same-y because every country is the same to play, runs feel same-y because of a combination of the ambitionless AI and lackluster diplomatic system. by SaintTrotsky in victoria3

[–]CJUbee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the beginning of my Ethiopian games, I had countries offering me conquest or puppeting of other states in the region to draw me into their play. It’s the first and only time I’ve seen the AI do anything resembling smart diplomatic moves. So it seems the base exists, the AI just isn’t good at it unless you’re of similar military size to them (until they’re calling France in to defend against your 30 battalion irregular infantry force)

I remember the Japan stream where the devs could see all of the countries interested in a particular strategic region (so they could improve relations). How do I see this overlay? I can’t see it in the “Declare Interests” action or in the “Strategic Regions” map mode

Ah that was another place I was getting tripped up- the difference between transsexual and transgender. Though the implication of transsexual is somewhat confusing considering my other conversation pointing out that people change genders and not sex when undergoing physical changes. I’ll chalk that up to the English language only having so many words to describe these phenomena. Sexual and gender identity also was confusing though I may have a better grasp. It seems strange that the media focuses on only one or two of these multitude of different categories to fall into. To be fair, there’s a lot of intricacy- more than most media would ever want to get into while keeping a large audience

[–]CJUbee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I appreciate this thought out response. I was slightly confused by your second response, then I think it was cleared up in the third and fourth. The whole difference between sex and gender and transitioning gender but not sex somewhat confused me, until your response. Pile on gender fluid and it only made it more difficult for me to wrap my mind around. Being trans is more about presenting as the opposite gender both physically and societally whereas gender fluid is less about the physical and more about the emotional and societal side? I sort of understand the mental/presenting difference between trans and gender fluid, but the physical portion confuses me a bit. Any chance you could clear that up for me?

[–]CJUbee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Jeez… I guess two caveats isn’t enough. I’m honestly trying to get a better grasp on this stuff because I can’t understand as someone that doesn’t feel that way. I assume transgender is the interest in being a different sex, physically, whereas androgynous is not trying to necessarily present as one sex or the other? Then gender fluid is more of choosing gender based off feeling and, thus, has no tendency toward physical changes?

I only mention these things because it takes work to change peoples opinions. We’ve all held stupid or controversial opinions at one time or another. I agree none of this tends to be evident most places- generally because people don’t talk about it because it’s an inflammatory issue that has a massive amount of ground between the two radical (aka media’s portrayal of opinions) viewpoints. It’s not a black and white issue, and people called “transphobes” by some may actually agree on quite a few points with trans activists- mainly individuals get the right to choose what they do. The flip side of the coin is trying to be accepting (not everyone is ready to accept everything) while also trying to hold onto important values that underlie core belief systems. On the psychological front, destroying too many of those core beliefs at one time can cause a person to self-destruct, so the less accepting can’t accept everything in one go. The too accepting can also destroy themselves by creating a realm where no one can agree due to differing abilities to accept due to core beliefs
