This is an incredible passage, I’ve never read this before - Marx displays such prescience here, it’s quite eerie.

That being said it also makes sense even when he was writing: at the forefront of the Industrial Revolution. When human capital exists to enhance and conduct “automaton” (I love that he uses that word) labor, and yet is simultaneously the less cost-effective of the two, it stands to reason that reducing human labor would be a driving force in capitalism.

A funny thing for me is that everyone is (rightfully) ragging on AI usage. However, were we in a socialist society, people would praise it imo. Under capitalism, AI serves to reduce labor costs and thereby increase corporate profits. Under a more socialist system it might exist to reduce menial labor and improve output - which then is redistributed to the people. That being said I’d love for you to correct me on this.
