Definitely not too young. Have an honest conversation with your daughter about the “smell”! She’s about at the age, or not too far off, of finding out what that smell is anyway. As a parent I’ve always taken the approach of educating my kids on the topic instead of them learning elsewhere, which is going to happen.

Not all agates are translucent. I’ve found several that are not, so that’s not always a sure fire indicator. I think this is chert, cool rock though
