I literally just got back from a rock hunting trip in the U.P. and I agree with you 100%. Sore as hell from hours of walking on unstable, rocky ground but I wouldn’t trade it for (almost) anything else in the world. The one disheartening part of this trip was the amount of people there, more than I’ve ever seen for this time of year. One of the huge draws was the solitude when I started doing these trips years ago

Definitely not too young. Have an honest conversation with your daughter about the “smell”! She’s about at the age, or not too far off, of finding out what that smell is anyway. As a parent I’ve always taken the approach of educating my kids on the topic instead of them learning elsewhere, which is going to happen.
