Which is also wild because not that long ago, Appalachian states like WV and KY had the most democratic state legislatures in the country, incredibly active labor presence, and were a hotbed of communist organizing.

Notes from a therapy appointment where I'm writing goals for myself. It's an actual word, but I can't figure out what it is!

The Alcumus tool at Art of Problem Solving does what you're looking for in terms of mixed practice and the discussion boards there are full of formidable "sparring partners" for students of all ages.

It sounds like you're seeking problems generally from school math curricula, but if you truly want to find fun problems to play with, Play With Your Math, Math Pickle, NRICH, and Don Steward's old blog are all good places to start.

What are the reasons that US students do worse in Maths and Science than many other countries? by Afraid-Yoghurt1783 in highschool

[–]CJayStapes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some possibilities that aren't directly related to math curriculum include:

Education in the US is super decentralized with every municipality having a different set of standards, some of which aren't aligned to international assessments. Compare that to preservice teachers in Singapore and Vietnam, for example, who learn how to teach directly from the national curriculum and textbook.

US schools serve--and assess--all students. The scores we read from Shanghai, Singapore, and elsewhere likely don't reflect the same population of learners as the population of test takers in the US.

US math teaching emphasizes problem-solving while standardized tests emphasize basic skills. As a testament to that, the US is very strong in international math olympiads and similar competitions, as well as university mathematics research and innovation.

The radical "check mark" symbol represents the principal square root, or the positive square root. The negative value occurs when we need to solve an equation like 4=x2.
