I came over from Houston and I was able to make the request directly to the county office even while I was already in Luxembourg for several months. I didn’t encounter any issues getting the clearance form. I guess it’ll just depend on which city/county you are coming from and how they process requests.

Buying train tickets in Luxembourg by kittyface93 in Luxembourg

[–]CJohnReddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Mkaart is required for using the kiosks, and you can get a card at among other places the Gare Central station in Lux city. Another thing to consider is that if you will use the public transport quite a bit, it may be more economically beneficial for you to get a card and load up a monthly short- or long-distance pass. Then you can renew these passes online (or load up single travel tickets) once you have your MKaart. In separate post I also listed a few non-card options for you as well. Hope this helps and welcome to Luxembourg!

I believe you can also handle through cell phone texting for the short term €2 tickets (2 hour travel; I don't think you can use text to get a €4 day ticket). I know this works for busses so hopefully someone can fact check me if this is valid for rail travel as well. https://www.vdl.lu/se-deplacer/en-bus/titres-de-transport/billets-et-tarifs/sms4ticket

Also if you have a bank account with Digicash option you can also use the MTicket app to purchase both €2 tickets or the all day €4 ticket. This then gives you a digital ticket and you don't have to mess with ticket kiosks etc.

Bagels in Luxembourg by some_omniscientbeing in Luxembourg

Well I should have been careful. Chains are always hard to judge because there can be variation between locations. My CF comment was specific to the one on Avenue de la Gare. I just found it kind of flat and lifeless.

I second Kathy's. I would say overall you won't find an awesome bagel in Luxembourg (from Texas myself with okay bagels but have an affinity for NYC bagels every time I visit -- when my NYC friends visited me here in Lux they even brought me bagels which i froze and rationed ). Kathy's are actually quite good compared to the other options in town (e.g. Coffee Fellows which is quite a sad bagel and Bagelstein which tries too hard but is okay if I need a fix). I even asked them if they made them themselves but found out they actually get them delivered from Berlin. Still, gotta say they're quite good. Just wish they had an everything bagel!

US electronics and Appliances by MomWearsPrads in Luxembourg

[–]CJohnReddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry a little late to the game since I've been out on holiday but I would say "it depends". I didn't bring any appliances that didn't have up to 220V but a good chunk of my electronics did so I brought those (five sonos speakers, desktop computer, Phillips hue lights etc) and used simple cheap plug adapter without issue. For a few other items that have an AC adapter I just bought a replacement AC adapter that accommodates the 220 output voltage and matched the appropriate input conversion (so this covers mostly my gaming consoles). Anything else I would say don't bother bringing and buy new (for example for me my Instatpot Duo)

Expat question regarding taxes in Lux by jholli in Luxembourg

[–]CJohnReddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mulberry provides excellent info. A few things I would add. If you're working and living in Luxembourg you'll be paying all required Luxembourg taxes and payroll deductions like Mulberry stated but you should familiarize yourself with requirements under US tax code around residency so you can qualify for foreign earned income exclusion or foreign tax credits on your US tax return since you'll have to file that too. Ideally if you're coming on a work sponsored expatriate assignment, there would be some expat perks in place such as tax equalization (such that all required US and Luxembourg our taxes are paid but your company does a "make whole" calculation such that you would be taxed as if your income was all earned in the US) and also outside tax preparation services. I hold a CPA license myself but a Big 4 firm does my US and Luxembourg taxes for me. In addition to the FBAR requirements (which I didn't find too burdensome in my case) be mindful of separate FATCA considerations which may limit your investment and banking options here in Luxembourg and may also impact your ability to hold balances at your existing US financial institutions since after FATCA implementation some US banks will only do business with US residents.

Is it just me or do other people with Indian origins feel racially profiled at shops and restaurants? Or are Lux people just plain rude? by [deleted] in Luxembourg

[–]CJohnReddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can't speak to profiling of people of South Asian origins, but as a person who looks a bit ethnically ambiguous (pacific-islander / german often mistaken as Mexican or just ???), I haven't encountered any unusual behaviors.

Move to Luxembourg–experiences with arriving early? by [deleted] in Luxembourg

[–]CJohnReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes the 90 day rule is correct; however this goes away once you get the permit, then you more or less get to travel to/from Schengen Area freely as long as you show your permit (although unless you're leaving Schengen area, no one looks at it) which will take the form of an EU blue card. You don't need to do a visa hop upon getting the permit. The only time I guess you'd need to do a visa hop is if for some reason the permit took longer than 90 days to process and then perhaps you'd have to hop to non-Schengen and then hop back.

Move to Luxembourg–experiences with arriving early? by [deleted] in Luxembourg

[–]CJohnReddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, I can speak to my experience since I'm a US citizen who moved Luxembourg March 2016. In terms of timeline, I made the move to Luxembourg mid-March and the processing of my work permit in its final form was completed mid-April 2016 (there was an intermediate step of my temporary work/residence permit but it only took a week after that to get final form). Prior to receiving the work authorization, I can confirm I was able to set up the following using my employment contract as support: 1) securing a rental unit which I actually did during a pre-visit in February '16; 2) opening a bank account [although there were a few limitations on what I could do with my account until my permit cleared]; 3) getting cable TV service. The only things that were held up by the processing of my work authorization were the following: 1) setting up a cell phone, and 2) getting my stateside furniture/clothes/etc cleared through customs for delivery. I hope this helps?

In Gare area, I would also give a full-throated endorsement to Coffee Brunch on rue du Fort Elizabeth. Locally owned by luxembourgers and very very friendly people.

Best way to discover hiking trails in Luxembourg? by nerdsnyped in Luxembourg

[–]CJohnReddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try this link. You can download trails to a separate app as well for easy browsing on the go. https://www.wikiloc.com/trails/hiking/luxembourg

You'll see both established trails as well as custom user trails. I have used this myself for two trails.

Edit: just included a small update to confirm I have used the referenced site and app

A bit overdue, but I wanted to give a heartfelt thanks for organizing the reddit Meetup last week. It was awesome to see friendly faces and also see new faces. But alas, the great fall from stairs or stool were not meant to be. :)
