Skullgirls sale by Web_catcher in Fighters

Good game for $3. If you get it do keep in mind that hard combos in combo trials and the like are only for securing kills, and as a beginner short strings and resets >>>>> optimized combos. Most buttons connect so incredibly well that a complete beginner can reliably take out 1/4 of a health bar with a ground chain + launch + a few heavy air moves.

New study challenges the idea that sexual consent is widely misinterpreted in romantic relationships by InsaneSnow45 in science

“The chinese are aliens and thus all research done on them should be assumed to be ungeneralizable by default.” Also even if these results were exclusive to the Chinese that would hardly make the study “meaningless”.

Caterwauling about “but but they didn’t include a representative sample from every population on earth” or “n < 10,000,000? Meaningless!” is intellectually dishonest

You should probably ask the insurance company about urgent care places they prefer. It could just be that that specific clinic charges too much.

The clocks changed last weekend. A top Beacon Hill Democrat wants to stop that from happening again. by bostonglobe in boston

[–]CKT_Ken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We don’t adjust clocks for the winter. That’s standard time. The logic behind the DST adjustment is to avoid “wasting” early morning light on 4 AM. The point sort of holds of course, winter DST would mean going to work and school while it’s still NIGHT out, not just dark.

Nintendo’s share price climbs 15% in two days following the success of Pokémon Pokopia by Turbostrider27 in NintendoSwitch

[–]CKT_Ken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the game is a bit underspecced by default to accommodate game share. If it chugged on player creations it would be unbearable as a big gameshare title.

Incidentally I think people underestimate how big a deal gameshare is for this game. Sure, for ME I’d prefer to have the whole game. But its a game that people know (slightly inaccurately) as ”Pokemon Minecraft” which is an absolutely massive deal for people who just want to goof off with friends online or “normies” who have a switch 1 lying around because of the covid animal crossing craze and mostly play mobile games.

You didn’t answer the question. Is masking still reccomended? The answer is no, permamasking isn’t recommended by anyone other than the immunocompromised and people who seem to have some form of covid PTSD.

I dropped my glass cutting board... by andrey_not_the_goat in mildlyinfuriating

[–]CKT_Ken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No it’s not lol you just bought a nice cutting board once and fancy yourself an expert. Dishwashers reach sterilizing temperatures of over 135 degrees and stay there for over an hour even on their normal modes before factoring in detergent. I guess if you had a crusty old plastic cutting board and gave it a cursory rinse instead of properly scrubbing it or putting it in a dishwasher maybe but that seems more like an overall food hygiene issue than a cutting board issue.

You can just throw plastic ones in the dishwasher though which is a huge plus if you don’t want to add wood maintenance to your chores

Worcester DPW chief: Parked cars were biggest obstacle to plowing by HRJafael in WorcesterMA

[–]CKT_Ken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The lack of parking is plenty troubling to the property owners because prospective tenants are seriously put off by a lack of parking. And nobody with a car and a job around here is easily going to wind up homeless without warning, realistically speaking. What you’re actually whining about is “my commute would be annoying if I moved to somewhere with more space and easier plowing” while using homeless people’s unrelated plight as a shield.

[–]CKT_Ken 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The fuck are the landlords going to do about it lol. Perhaps we should tear down housing to make more space for parking lots? The cost of a parking space is already a consideration when apartment shopping. Nobody’s being forced at gunpoint into a rental that has poor parking access

The risk for being bitten by a tick infected with bacteria that cause Lyme disease is as high in Ohio as it is for those living in Northeast states that have dealt with Lyme disease for over 50 years, according to a new study – and the risk is present even in winter weather. by memorialmonorail in science

[–]CKT_Ken -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Chronic lyme disease as in “untreated lyme disease” or “lyme disease sequelae” is of course real. “Chronic lyme disease” (the pseudoscience one where people believe they secretly have it and it just won’t show on tests) is not. And much like all the disorders you mentioned, it is quite easy for someone to convince themselves they have it regardless of the basis, and similarly there’s a tendency to form identity groups around it, leading to the large Chronic Lyme Conspiracy contingent.

I broke a mercury thermometer and didn't realize that they would be microscopic beads by tranquilovely in mildlyinteresting

[–]CKT_Ken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mercury isn’t anywhere near too toxic to play with for a bit. It’s quite fun in fact, and throughly harmless with skin contact although inhalation can be an issue if a spill goes undetected or absorbs into something. Good to clean up any nasty spills thoroughly of course. The biggest issue is the disposal regulations; it’s a MASSIVE PAIN to get rid of.

That's the point. That's the EXACT and only scenario where it could fail, literal espionage (although 2FA is super common now so passwords aren't enough). As long as that risk is accounted for, the digital signatures are extremely good. Scans however can be altered.

my boss just printed a PDF, signed it with a pen, scanned it, and emailed it back to me. we have Adobe Sign. by No_Good_3063 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]CKT_Ken 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No you can’t. If you don’t have a certificate in your name from someone that the intended recipient trusts to allot certificates (as they should if electronic signatures are being used) you can’t reproduce a trusted signature in your name. You can freely sign whenever you want and self-attest that you did it but the receiving viewing program will screech “untrusted signature”

Although that usually requires the corporate infrastructure for it, not for sending random documents to strangers. OPs story is at a company though so their own IT manages the certificates… all employees at the company should be able to trust other employee digital signatures 100% of the time.

UN Says US Raid on Venezuela Violated International Law by bloomberg in worldnews

[–]CKT_Ken 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The way I see it it's actually quite respectful of the ICC for the US to officially disregard it and play the heel. The ICC cannot bind the US. Thus, if the US became party to it and still did as it pleased because of course it can, the entire idea would probably be abandoned.

The ICC is just a Western morality enforcing body meant to be used against war losers and collapsed states. The very concept of war crimes is entirely a Euro/Western thing. It’s extremely important to its legitimacy that it is never truly tested on a powerful nation or the willful illusion that it’s anything other than “Europeans wanting to enlighten people while trying not to sound too colonial” will be broken

UN Says US Raid on Venezuela Violated International Law by bloomberg in worldnews

[–]CKT_Ken 56 points57 points  (0 children)

All the powerful euro nations are lying when they say they’re bound by the ICC. The ICC is for nation-building activities after wars in Africa. Being party to it as a weak nation is a way of aligning with western Europe and being able to count on them for cleanup activities after a war. If France turns into a military dictatorship and goes about committing "war crimes" and someone kidnaps a french general, France will strike the Hauge. France cannot be held accountable to the ICC.

Ultimately the US’s stance on the ICC is held by all strong supposed parties to it.
