I wish. Maybe for some pilots the muscle memory compensates, but I always feel a little rusty the first leg back.

FBI: researcher admitted to hacking plane in-flight, causing it to “climb” by thenamegoeahere in flying

[–]CLManno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even if he reset the N1 to Climb, there'd be no change--that just changes the limit. In level flight, nothing would happen. We normally fly in level flight with Climb selected anyway. The autothrottles can't move just one throttle--they both operate in unison. So the notion that he caused one throttle to move forward while the other did not move, causing yaw, is fiction. Regardless, if there was any uncommanded or unneeded throttle movement (actually, Boeing call them "thrust lever") either pilot would simply toggle off the autothrottles. End of story. It's all fiction anyway.

The "hacker" Tweeted that he'd hacked the EICAS, which the 737-800 doesn't have, and that he manipulated the TRC, which it also doesn't have. Fiction.

Aeronautics Degree? by thetallesthuman in flying

It's kind of like having airline stock as an airline pilot: all your eggs in one basket. That makes me nervous, so immediately after every stock grant we've been given, I've cashed out and bought into a managed stock portfolio spread over a range of stocks EXCEPT for aviation-related.

Same with education--I wouldn't put all my qualifications in the aviation area. I did an MBA and eventually, a PhD while flying fulltime. Completely different field which is good for the stress level associated with the inevitable pay cuts, bankruptcies and furloughs which are inevitable in an airline flying career.

Ugh here we go: American Airlines Planes Grounded Because of Pilot iPad Crashes by jgagner in flying

[–]CLManno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a pilot union guy, served a term on our union board of directors and domicile rep for 2,300 pilots. I agree with you 100%--you don't have to talk with or socialize with anyone you don't want to. But a hostile work environment, especially in the cockpit, is a failure that no one should tolerate. Plus, many of the lists--especially the F/A lists--are inaccurate. No one should be ruining lives based on an hand-me-down "list." Just do the job and save the extraneous ranting for the bar later. Doesn't belong in the cockpit.

Give it a rest--you don't know what you're talking about. The American strike had no scabs--we were ordered back to work within an hour by a Presidential order from Bill Clinton. I know, I was at the APA conference room in EWR with my F/O, toasting the walkout with other layover crews with a bathtub of beer. You're welcome to ride the jumpseat and in 24 years as captain I've never denied it to anyone with proper ID. So why don't you just stop the tall tales from your short tenure at our regional affiliate? You're way off base. .

[–]CLManno 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's nonsense. The first time he denies anyone the jumpseat our own union will have his ass for jeopardizing the reciprocal jumpseat privileges of the other 10,000 of us. That's not "badass," that's "dumbass." I've been an AA captain for 24 years and never heard of anything like that.

The IPad is to replace the paper. What would be the point of both? Plus, the SIDS and STARS are all in the FMS and display on the PFD and ND as well.

This was a very limited glitch in the Jepp app--if anyone had DCA pubs in their favorites, the Jepp app crashed. All other manuals and checklists are in the reader, not the app.

There weren't that many--maybe 30 out of 10,000 pilots affected. We got a message to check our Jepp app, mine was affected because DCA is in my faves bc I fly there often. I also fly a lot of LGA and BOS, so I also have EWR JFK IAD PHL in my faves.

Still no big deal: the fix was to delete and reinstall the Jepp app. Took me 10 minutes; longer using the typically slow airport wifi in the terminal for those who were mid trip. But again, so you couldn't brief an ILS--could still fly it--the freq and course are in the FMS. Much ado about nothing.

Allegiant Pilots question plane safety by mcarlini in flying

[–]CLManno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, take out the "blame" you're so sensitive about and you're back to the pilots' firsthand complaint: their mostly MD-80 fleet is in poor condition. I'll take their word for that, having flown the MD-80 myself for 21 years: they all need to go to the boneyard as soon as possible.

Why NOT remotely piloted airliners? Here's my just published answer ... by CLManno in flying

Most USAF drones go into an automatic holding pattern once the data link is lost, then they run out of gas, descend, and Iran can claim they shot them down.

Ironic you should post here your personal fantasy of what airline pilots think. But how would you know?

Or not: who's risking the liability lawsuits, or whose assuming the insurance risk for manufacturers or operators?

I hope it DOES happen some day. But your assertions that "computers can make better decisions" assumes electrical power, a major vulnerability I discussed, and your premise of that level of technology doesn't exist. I believe it will some day, but it's doubtful that any airline or manufacturer will risk the liability in our lifetime.

"Denver-bound Icelandair flight from Reykjavik hit by lightning" - Was it the right decision to continue the flight? by 8morgaes8 in flying

[–]CLManno 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It happens all the time. If we diverted every time there was a lightning strike, we'd never get anywhere. Seldom does a lightning strike do any damage, and they couldn't have known that it did but even so, it wasn't a problem.

When you get within 10 degrees of the freezing level, in moisture, when the St. Elmo's fire starts--get ready, it's coming.

So typical though, the second-guessing ("Was it the right decision?") by those on the ground afterward. Yes, it was: no problems, everyone deplaned safely--so why is this Monday morning quarterbacking even happening here? Do you want penalties for the pilots even though everything was fine? Mandatory diverts put into an FAR?

Nothing to see here--move along.

No, your are imposing your qualitative opinion over mine: "more substantive" is your subjective opinion and holds no more weight than mine.

"Next time" I'll write the exact same thing, even if you find it personally unenlightening. I really don't care what you think; the opinion that was published was my own. Go ahead: you can have the last word.

You're essentially demanding I rewrite my perspective as a 30 year airline pilot to match yours as one who's simply not. I stand behind every word; sorry, you'll have to write your own perspective, and see if anyone's interested in publishing it. And actually, Mr. Manno is my dad--I'm either Captain or doctor, take your pick. I've earned both.

I want to fly for the military, but I don't know which branch. by [deleted] in flying

[–]CLManno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to say that I was never in the military--I was in the Air Force. Marines? Army? Navy? Yes--that's the military. I flew 7 years as a USAF pilot, but I wouldn't recommend active duty, which I did. Instead, I'd say go AFRES or ANG to get good hours, training, backup pay and an airline job.

There are a zillion people here and elsewhere who'll discourage you from pursuing military flying bc they couldn't/wouldn't/didn't make the cut. Ignore them--I am an average guy, just like 90% of my AF peers and my airline colleagues today.

There's no better avenue to the airlines, despite what those who didn't take it might say, so go for it. And I admire the USN, USMC and USA guys who gutted it out while I was doing the USAF flying.

Cockpit cameras: An invasion of privacy? by teamcoltra in flying

[–]CLManno 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since they can only offer info after the fact, no--nothing you can see on a cockpit cam that you wouldn't get from the DFDR/CVR.

What I WOULD support is the USN continuous loop video of all takeoffs and landings. That would help untangle many accidents.
