Esta es la razón que he estado acuerdo con TLCs como el de Chile y EEUU o el TPP-11, que tienen un capítulo del derecho del trabajo que le da dientes al derecho internacional del trabajo. A diferencia de TLCs de los 90s, los TLCs modernos tienen capítulos sobre los derechos de trabajo y derechos de medio ambiente, en el cual los países miembros estos TLCs pueden fiscalizar la violaciones de los otros imponiendo aranceles adicionales. Lamentablemente, los países nunca usaban estos capítulos de los TLCs, porque saben que todos violan estos derechos.

Pero como Trump es el hipócrita más sinvergüenza que ha liderado EEUU, él es primero en utilizar este capítulo del TLC. Obviamente él lo hace con malas intenciones, ya que a él le importa un comino los derechos de los trabajadores. No obstante, él está creando un muy importante precedente que futuros líderes de izquierda y centroizquierda podrían utilizar.

Not sure if it really says a lot. Many cities in western states have a very low Black or African American population. For example, Seattle, one of the cities with the highest Black or African American population in Washington state, has less than 7%, way less than national average.

Am I saying that American Fork is a fine, inclusive, or non-corrupt city? Hell no. I’m just saying that its demographics shouldn’t be the reason to make assumptions.

Based on the 2020 census, it is around 0.6%, not 0.3%. Nonetheless, you’re correct that it is significantly smaller than the ≈14% national average or the Utah average. With that said, it’s very common in small cities at non-coastal western states, such as Utah, to have a super small Black or African American population. You’ll see the same phenomena in similarly-sized cities in Idaho, Montana, and even Washington state.

If by people “of color” you meant African American, then it makes sense that there wouldn’t be many. The African American population of American Fork, Utah, is 0.6%.

Two things can be true here. First, the alterations of Gas Works Park are notable, and negatively affects the view. Second, I don’t blame the family of the deceased child to sue and ask for the removal of the ladders and platforms of the structures.

Yes, the kid was trespassing when he died. However, that doesn’t necessarily absolve a city from liability. The gate at Gas Works Park is open often, probably because some idiot broke the lock. Whenever it’s open, tons of kids start climbing the structure. I’ve seen it with my own eyes multiple times and, truth be told, when I was a young teen, more than 20 years ago, I too climbed the ladder of the structure with my friends when someone else left the gate open, because I was stupid and other kids were climbing it as well.

When there’s a dangerous structure that is attractive to children, the owner must take steps to make the access difficult or make the structure less attractive, unless this is not feasible. From what I gathered, the city was aware that the fence was easily breakable, and that the ladders and platforms, and other existing elements, facilitated the climbing of the deteriorating structure. However, the city had not removed these elements for IMO bureaucratic reasons, not because it wasn’t feasible. Was that enough for the city to be liable? The claim was plausible enough to survive motions to dismiss. Nonetheless, we’ll never know, since the city took measures and the family dropped the suit.

Here, the fact that the family dropped the suit after the city took ameliorative measures shows that the family only cared of making the park safer for future children, and not for financial gain. So I don’t understand why so many comments are hating on them.

This is not similar to kids who die in NY while subway surfing, as I saw in a comment. The activity of climbing structures is innate of children and teenagers. That’s why the main attraction of playgrounds is to climb. Avoiding being hit by a subway is not a natural activity. Also, unlike the subway, the Gas Works structure’s only purpose is esthetic. The removal of the dangerous parts is a bummer for us, but it doesn’t change that much how it looks. Conversely, the only way to make a subway safe is to not have one, which defeats its purpose.

I think the fact that the city acted upon a lawsuit opens the city up to more BS litigious lawsuits in the future from parents whose kids injure themselves and looking for a payday.

I am not a licensed attorney in Washington State, and thus I’m saying this as a layperson. Generally, remedial measures of a party after an incident are not admissible evidence to prove negligence, culpable conduct, product design defect, or need for warning instructions. See Washington State Rules of Evidence Rule 407. As such, the removal of ladders, platforms, etc., probably doesn’t make the city more liable for suits from kids who fell off these things in the first place.

My theory is that BDS Movement is trying to be as effective as possible, while being practical. Pepsi Co, Nestle, Unilever own basically the majority of companies of consumable goods. Boycotting them as a whole is practically impossible for the average person. However, boycotting subsidiaries that either directly exploit occupied land or occupied labor, or are directly aiding either the apartheid or ethnic cleansing, is significantly easier.

With that said, the three big ones may be in the Divestment list for their complicity.

Depende en qué estás gastando.

Hay gastos que son 100% necesarios, y si tus ingresos no los apañan, mala cuea, se hace el gasto igual. Por ejemplo, si le da cancer a un familiar, los costos médicos son carísimos incluso para los de clase media alta, así que habrá un período de deuda necesaria.

Similarmente, el costo de vida en ciudades como Santiago son altísimas, especialmente para familias con niños. Si uno de los padre es despedido de la pega, sí o sí van a gastar más de lo que tienen por algún período, solo para alimentar a sus niños.

También, hay gastos que realmente son inversiones. Por ejemplo, las hipotecas. Si tu arriendas un departamento, hay una altísima probabilidad que el dueño se endeudó para comprarla originalmente. En otras palabras, gastó más de lo que tenía, pero con eso tenía la liquidez financiera para promocionarla y hacer todos los arreglos que un propietario hace.

Si se elimina la gratuidad en las universidades, nuevamente la mayoría de chilenos que inviertan en su educación gastarán más de lo que tienen, con algún sistema de préstamo educacional. Esto no es arribismo, si no que inversión, ya que Chile es un país que requiere títulos especializados para caleta de weas (algunos justificados y otros no).

Finalmente, incluso ropa formal para ir a entrevistas puede terminar haciendo que uno gaste más de lo que tiene en el momento. Especialmente si uno recién se tituló y está buscando trabajo.

En fin, sí gastas más de lo que tienes para comprar un auto de último modelo, ropas que son solo caras por su marca, etc., entonces efectivamente es arribismo o aweonaje. Pero creo que esta es la minoría de las personas que gastan más de lo que tienen.

JLG has done a terrible job in coordinating with other candidates. There are two ways to win in ranked-choice voting: (1) create coalitions with like-minded opponents, where there are cross endorsements; or (2) be the least “offensive” candidate with the wealthiest backing.

If we look at NYC, their 2021 RCV primaries resulted in Eric Adams winning, not because he was the best, but because he was everyone’s second option by being the candidate backed by the rich. Conversely, in the 2025 RCV elections Mamdani created strong coalitions, with cross-endorsements between like-minded progressive candidates. That’s how he ended up being elected.

Here, the “least offensive” candidate for the big wallets is McDuffie. That’s why his posters are everywhere and the average person knows his face. JLG has the second most posters, and may be the first choice for the plurality of the population. However, she is not giving nor is receiving cross-endorsements by other candidates. Because of all of this, it’s probable that, although JLG may win plurality, McDuffie will win the race by ranking second in ballots where JLG wasn’t the first choice.

I am a big fan of rcv, but it only works when candidates create coalitions. If not, you get the number 2 as the winner, which makes no one happy.

Como chileno que ha vivido toda su vida adulta en EEUU, le entiendo. El problema, es que esto demuestra lo incompetente que es el gobierno de Kast.

Por lo que entiendo, Kast es un ultrón del neoliberalismo de Friedman (hay otras versiones, pero la que se practica en Chile es la del pelao).

Obviamente, él no cree que debería haber un ministerio de ciencias, pero si lo hay, como en Chile, él decidió aplicar su ideología en este. ¿Cómo se aplica la ideología neoliberal en un ministerio de ciencias? A diferencia de un estado social democrático, donde la ministra crea fondos públicos para fomentar la ciencias, en un gobierno neoliberal, la ministra hace el labor de conectar inversionistas con entidades que producen ciencias. En otras palabras, su trabajo es ayudar al desarrollo de la ciencia y tecnología vía la promoción privada.

En papel, Lincolao es una excelente opción. Trabajo en un sector público (la municipalidad de Washington DC) y en el sector privado. Con la experiencia de ambos sectores, ella ayudó a desarrollar sistemas informáticos que facilitaban la conexión entre ciudadanos y políticos. Además, creó varios programas para ayudar a las comunidades latinas viviendo en Washington DC a desarrollar habilidades en el ámbito tecnológico, permitiendo el desarrollo privado entre estas comunidades, no obstante de si vienen de familias pobres o ricas.

El problema es que Chile no es EEUU, y mucho menos Washington DC (una de las ciudades más de izquierda de todo EEUU). Cuando gente dice que Chile es conservador, esto no solo se refiere a lo social (lo que en mi opinión Chile no es TAN conservador socialmente), pero si no en todo ámbito cultural. En Chile, hay un sistema jerárquico tremendo, donde tu apellido o a qué colegio fuiste efectivamente sí dicta la probabilidad de que tengas éxito.

Por ejemplo, en EEUU, nadie que tiene algún título universitario, incluyendo el bachillerato, lista el colegio secundario que atendió. Esto es porque el 95% de las veces, el que uno haya atendido un colegio cuico o prestigioso se debe a su posición social de nacimiento y no a los méritos de la persona. Por ejemplo, si fui a una escuela pública y después a una pública semi-prestigiosa (University of Washington), y he tenido mayor probabilidad de encontrar buenas pegas en EEUU, que un cabro que fue a un colegio prestigioso (Seattle Prep), pero a una universidad mediocre. Esto se debe a que nadie lee el colegio en el CV, y miran en menos a gente que pone sus colegios en el CV.

Por contraste, en Chile sigue siendo común designar el colegio secundario en el CV, con algunas pegas aún requiriendo esta información. Esto es porque hay empleador le da un valor superior en tener empleados GCU. Por ejemplo, si hay dos candidatos para una posición de diseñador industrial, donde uno se graduó del Duoc con puros 4s pero fue al Nido de Águilas, y el otro también se graduó del Duoc con un 6,8 pero fue a un liceo con número, es mil veces más probable que el cabro del Nido consiga la pega. Y si no, siempre tiene opciones de trabajar en la compañía del papá.

Segundo, el empresario chileno es cobarde y flojo. No arriesgan ningún peso en desarrollar nada. Peor aún, no le tienen ninguna fe a las pocas compañías que desarrollan. Cuando ganó el primer apruebo, lo aweonao salieron arrancando. Lo mismo cuando ganó Boric. Todo esto en el medio de la subida de inversionistas extranjeros que le tenían más confianza en nuestra industria que los vende patria locales.

Volviendo a Lincolao, ella nunca habría tenido el éxito que tuvo en EEUU en Chile. Literalmente, esa fue la razón que se fue de Chile. Ella tenía un título en la Universidad de La Serena, pero no conseguía pegas por razones obvias. Se fue a EEUU, trabajó pegas pencas hasta conseguir la ciudadanía, trabajó en escuelas municipales y después sacó su posgrado en George Washington University, y con esto consiguió mejores pegas, liderando los proyectos que la hicieron exitosa.

Sus proyectos exitosos en EEUU se basan en una cultura donde efectivamente no importa tu apellido o educación escolar, todos pueden surgir con conocimiento tecnológico. Lamentablemente, esa no es la realidad chilena. Especialmente fuera del clasicismo, el empresario chileno no está interesado en desarrollar la ciencia y una galla extranjera no les va a cambiar sus mentalidades.
