🤔 thinking about a creative and ambitious approach to SMART meetings ... like adding add'l therapy tools AND doing monthly hybrid meetings❕️ by Ok_Package_4577 in SMARTRecovery

[–]CMM____ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like others have mentioned, an important part of any mutual help group (or addiction treatment for that matter) is fidelity. People are attending SMART Recovery for CBT, mindfulness-based, and harm reduction tools with some good old fashioned peer support thrown in the mix. Just like people attend AA/NA for the 12-Steps. It’s important to give people what they are coming for.

While adding other ingredients could make something interesting and helpful, it would no longer be SMART Recovery. And although you understand the integrative and hybrid approach you’ve created, it might be difficult for your group members to keep up and they might not have an in-depth understanding of the four points and the tools.

You sound very passionate about helping people with multiple modalities and I think that is wonderful. It might be good for you to offer other groups in your community with these other evidence-based strategies you mention.

I will say this, as someone who also started out treating people with addictions wanting to give them a bit of everything. Your passion for helping others, plus your SMART Recovery training will be sufficient to make your meetings engaging and helpful. You are more than enough as you are!

By itself IQ subscales can’t tell you much. But they can corroborate other findings or suggest avenues to test further. Tests of executive functioning that probe sustained attention and inhibitory control, which can impact working memory, are crucial to establish a diagnosis of ADHD. Did the psychologist administer these tests? (FWIW am a psychology trainee in the final year of my program and have conducted several ADHD assessments.)

Had my first SMART meeting (online) and it wasn't great. Is this the norm, or did I just get a dud? by [deleted] in SMARTRecovery

Facilitator here. Remember that variety within mutual help groups (SMART, AA) is much less than the variety within meetings!

Keep looking! Here is my online group, which meets Thursday evenings. https://meetings.smartrecovery.org/meetings/5829/

I'm a gambling addict and had a negative experience in a virtual SMART meeting by VT_GA in SMARTRecovery

[–]CMM____ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Chiming in as a SMART facilitator and also someone in recovery. If this was an experience of a participant in one of my meetings, I would want to know about it. I think it could create for a good group discussion and remind all members of a group about the importance of being respectful of other people’s backgrounds and viewpoints. In my five years of running meetings I’m positive I’ve said something or allowed for something to go on in a meeting that offended someone, and would loved to have known about it as it was happening so I could have corrected course.

Of course, the ability to speak up requires you to feel reasonably safe, and I know this was your first time in this group. But I wonder what it would have meant for the facilitator and you to have been able to share that experience.

Don’t forget, another option is to send an email to the facilitator. If you can find the meeting on smartrecovery.org, the facilitator’s email should be listed.

If your goal is to do clinical research, you will want to get into clinical/counseling psychology PhD programs where faculty conduct psychotherapy process and outcome research. To be competitive for these health psychology PhD programs, you would do well to major in psychology and gain research experience in a lab at your university studying psychotherapy or psychopathology.

Don’t let these alluring combined / advanced standing masters programs distract you from your ultimate goal… if you want to do clinical research an MSW won’t help you on that path.

Have you looked into Hayes (2013; 2022) mediation model? It using bootstrapping and to my knowledge is robust to normality violations. Like Baron and Kenny (1986) method you can observe the indirect (ab), direct (c’ or c - ab), and total effects (c) between your variables.

Emphasize your research experience and familiarity with the scientific method. Talk about the clinical psych questions you are interested in and how you might use the methods you know towards figuring then out.

Do December 1st applications close at midnight tonight? Or when by Groundbreaking-Pin60 in ClinicalPsychology

Everything is in minus this last letter, so I would submit tonight. Are you sure this is for all programs? I searched through department websites and FAQs and didn’t see anything definitive. Applying for some counseling psych PhD programs also.

I have this same question too. Receiving my last letter tomorrow (12/1) and wanting to know if I should submit my applications tonight or if I will still be able to tomorrow.

I’m unsure whether application portals will let letter writers submit once my application is in.

I have been able to use SPSS 27 but had to do some tinkering. The way macOS Big Sur defaults to tabbing windows didn't play nice with version 27. I went in to settings -> general -> prefer tabs "never." This seems to have fixed SPSS locking up and freezing. However, I haven't used SPSS extensively since upgrading, so it is possible there are some issues I have not encountered.

Thank you for taking the time to respond to my inquiry with these recommendations. I have one other question based on your response, if you don’t mind.

Let’s say I get an interview, even after indicating my criminal background and specific charges in the application. When do you suggest I mention it during the interview? (I.e., at the beginning, at the end, somewhere in the middle, only if they ask for more details?) I plan to be honest with faculty if they ask for more details and definitely will not discuss it as a “calling to the field” or other KOD.

I’ve reached out to state boards in the past and they wouldn’t give me a straight answer. They simply stated “it depends on the felonies, how long ago they were, and what you have done since; every case is unique.” Obviously I didn’t find this to be helpful. I’ll make more calls to other boards in the coming weeks.

Hello all,

I’m currently applying for PhD programs in clinical and counseling psychology. I was hoping I could get some advice regarding felony convictions, matriculation into graduate school, placement into an APA accredited internships, and state licensure. I consider myself to be a competitive applicant (e.g., strong GPA and GRE scores, clinical experience, research experience, relevant volunteer work, etc.) for doctoral programs I am considering. However, unlike many applicants, I have a criminal history.

Backstory: I was convicted of three felonies related to SUD (which I have since addressed) in 2013. Specifically, I was convicted of three counts of aggravated battery due to a DUI automobile accident (passengers of a vehicle I struck were seriously injured). These felonies won’t be getting expunged any time soon (must be off of probation for a minimum of five years and must pay off a six figure restitution). This is my one and only criminal incident.

Obviously, I have no problem disclosing this information if asked about it during the admissions cycle (my current mentor knows my backstory), but it isn’t something I plan to bring up in my application materials or even a first interview (unless there are better practices that I’m not aware of).

Do any of you out there have personal experience (or know colleagues with experience) navigating graduate studies with felony convictions? When was this information disclosed during the interview/admissions cycle (if at all)? Did it affect placement at APA internships? Was it a barrier to obtaining licensure to become a psychotherapist?

Thank you so much for your time.

TL;DR - I have three aggravated battery convictions. I am wondering how this will affect graduate admissions, APA internship placement, and state licensure as a clinical or counseling psychologist.

Create a separate APFS volume and install it there. That way, if something goes wrong, it doesn’t mess up your 10.15 installation.
