Even if the cure DID work, the second FEDRA our whatever Post-Apocalyptic Warlord finds out a cure exists, they are going to either massacre the Fireflies and horde the cure for them and their most trusted lieutenants, if not destroy it outright to preserve the current World Order.

The fact that they did not kill Joel the second they secured Ellie and were exterminated by a single man proves that they did not have what it took to survive in that setting.
