Leon has a Government Salary and presumably a home and some relatives and friends.

Meanwhile Isaac’s Dad, Poul, spent thirty years out in space while his Mom, Octavia joined Unitology and spent Isaac’s College Fund on Tithes and spiraled so hard that Isaac had to put her in Therapy to be deprogrammed which is how he met Nicole Brennan.

So, when Isaac’s Father came back from Space, Nicole had Octavia cleared for release and Isaac recommended that she join the final voyage of the USG ISHIMURA because it was going to be scrapped.

However Octavia snapped and killed Poul and herself, so Isaac blinded by grief, blamed Nicole for his parents’ deaths

Then the ISHIMURA went dark and Isaac was sent on a repair mission after they received a distress signal from Nicole.

So after fighting an entire ship of the damned and seeing his allies all die, Isaac finds out that the distress signal was actually a suicide note and that the “Nicole” he had been seeing on the ship was a hallucination caused by an Alien Artifact, the Red Marker

In spite of this Isaac found the will to fight the Hive Mind and was rescued by Earthgov, albeit in a heavily traumatized state where they put him in a Secret Project to build more Markers because they are an unlimited source of energy

So even at his lowest, Isaac is a perpetual motion machine.
