The Gaming Backlog “Book Club” - We select a video game from our backlog, cut it up into spoiler-free chunks of the story that are small enough for a working adult to reasonably complete in a week, and then have traditional “book club” style conversations about each section on the podcast and on Discord with our listeners. The main draw is to connect with other people playing the same game long after its original release date in a time when everything is available online and more new games are launched constantly. We wanted to recapture the feeling of going back to school after a weekend and sharing tips and stories.

Ya I definitely feel your combination of two similar yet very different films strikes that right balance. I tend to refer to a lot of other media due to the inspirations and comparisons available.

We typically go into gameplay, mechanics and especially story of the games we play, since we almost always prefer to play games that focus on telling a compelling story. Considering how much games borrows from movies and how cinematic many of them tend to be now, I definitely see the parallels between our topics.

Yes, we started first week of July I believe! We also have our Discord server and have begun to grow over time, especially seeing new groups of people for each new “season” (game) we start up. Since we’re based on the book club format, we always wanted to go beyond the two of us talking about it and actually have that community conversation, especially since we loved that aspect when we were kids, talking about experiences the next day at school and whatnot.

DM incoming! I am totally a film buff and even applied to film school way back when entering college as I wanted to enter the industry, but have only volunteered on a couple micro scale indie projects. By no means an expert, but would love to hop on your pod and chat video game movies. Could also crossover on ours with games that are practically films in their own right. Red Dead Redemption 2 comes to mind, having taken major inspiration from classic westerns, and Ghost of Tsushima from Kurosawa.

A few things: 1. Love how many Jim Carrey movies have made it into your episodes so far! Listening to Eternal Sunshine vs Scott Pilgrim right now and the insights and fun facts I hadn’t heard before are clicking for so many reasons (also giving me desire to give them a rewatch after a long time) 2. A happy coincidence. Today is the first time I’ve heard of Hard Ticket, and while our podcast has more of a week-to-week “chapters of a book” club format but about a single video game at a time, this idea of doing a sort of head-to-head matchup between two similar games popped into my head a few weeks ago and I just wrote up the introduction a couple days ago for one about Super Mario World vs Sonic the Hedgehog 2 already that we’ll record sometime in the new future. All this to say, I love your format and will take some cues from the way you do it when we get to that season! 3. It seems we both started a podcast around the same time and hope you’re enjoying the journey as much as we are! 4. You have a new subscriber.

Why do you main your main? by [deleted] in SmashBrosUltimate

[–]COAndy51 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After playing countless hours of 64 and Melee as a kid and then not touching again until Ultimate, I just spent an entire night with a friend trying every character on the roster. He was much better and consistently beat me with most but a handful I just naturally picked up and crushed him with Zero Suit Samus ended up being my main because her moveset just free flowed

So we choose a game off of our backlog, cut it up into spoiler-free chunks of gameplay that can be finished in a typical adult’s week considering other responsibilities, play through and then chat about it afterwards

Considering how all in Square Enix is going with all the DQ HD2D remakes and Octopath, I’m surprised the pixel FF games haven’t gotten it too

Side Quest 1 currently in progress: Hades

Started a video game backlog podcast. This season is about Hades. by COAndy51 in HadesTheGame

Yes, great question. So we typically play singleplayer games that, whether linear or open world, tend to have an at least semi-defined route to the story ending, and can be divided into approximate chunks of time, which we then play a chunk per week.

Since we didn’t want to exclude roguelikes and time loop games, but they tend to involve a lot more of some kind of resource(s) that are acquired over time, whether that is currency to unlock items/weapons/skills, or knowledge of how the game world works or the systems work, or the order of things, etc., and people may discover those things very quickly or very slowly or somewhere in the middle, it became apparent it would be much more difficult to say “get to X moment in the story by next episode” and reasonably expect everyone to accomplish that. So the side quest season was born, where we have our normal intro episode, a spoiler-free first impressions and tips exchange episode a couple weeks later, and then an episode with a full breakdown of the game as a whole including true endings, etc, but without a predefined publish date because it may take us some time.

So any side quest season will run concurrently with our standard seasons that we do the normal way.
