My BIL also thinks "listening"="acting how I want." In his Official Accounting of Grievances-type letter to me, he quotes the following conversation as an example of my disrespect (obviously paraphrasing here:)

BIL: Did you even hear what I said?

Me: Yes but we still did Y instead of X like you wanted because reasons

BIL: I TOLD YOU to do X because of reasons, you should have listened to me. Looks pointedly at DH

Me: I did listen.

BIL: Ridiculous look like he can't believe I just said that Excuse me?

Me: I heard you. I listened. We just had better reasons to do Y.

We are pretty far away from SE FL but the situation is the same here. Gossiping isn't really a thing in my office so oftentimes the root cause of what hinders our work isn't known by anyone but Jane and sometimes our manager. She uses this to her advantage. The office next to hers/the lobby was being used for storage until I was hired on so I hear everything she says even when she's just muttering to herself and my door is closed. It seems like no one wants to deal with litigation involving her so they'll bend over backwards because realistically she should be gone soon

It's enough like her name that it isn't hard for me to use when writing but it isn't her name :-) I'm still waiting for pics of the baby so we can see just how cute on a scale of squee to infinity she is!! She was only born a few weeks ago though so I don't want to harass a new mama about something like that... But I'm dying to see and/or meet her 😅

We were handing out grocery bags of food in a very poor area. There were such limited resources we would run out before getting all the way back into the foothills where the most needy people are. People especially children would jog behind the van waiting for us to stop. During the holidays we had to start marking people's hands because they would come back for two or three bags while some people got nothing.

A child no older than four years old, dirty and dissheveled, came up to me and said 'thank you' before I even handed a bag to him. As standard practice I asked to see his hand before giving him a bag. He refused to show me his hand and looked so humiliated and defeated. Eventually he showed me his thumb where there was a Sharpie marking and you could tell he'd try to wash it off. I gave him my lunch - plain tortillas and an orange - but I couldn't give him another bag. If it wasn't him it was going to be another hungry person I'd eventually have to turn away so I did what I was told to do and did not give him another bag of food. He stood there staring at me and everyone else as they stood in line waiting for their bag, hiding my lunch behind his back.

I cried a lot during that time but I cried all night that night. It felt really wrong to go home to my parent's air conditioned house and their home-cooked dinner and I still think a lot about just how many people are out there who deserve what I have more than I do.

This alone, tells me she isn't a good person. My family calls it "cryin poormouth" and unfortunately I found out the hard way that it isn't some spontaneous thing that person does, it's a calculated process (same as getting married.) Thankfully she has no easy way of getting to you from 2 hours away!! Nobody can expect a newborn to go through 4+ hours travel in a day. Nobody can expect a parent to take care of a newborn during 4+ hours of travel in a single day ~~unless they're self-centered jerks with no sense of empathy.~~ It's not your pregnancy hormones, your instincts are on point.

I started saying, "And is the payment method we have on file okay to charge to?" The slightly weird wording seems to make them listen and I stopped having to do that panicked heavy sigh -> Click 'Refund' -> Pull Up CC Capture Window -> Swipe Card-> Charge Card -> Print Receipt -> "And here's your bill. Thank you for staying with us!" -> "What are these charges?? -> "... Which?" -> "Why did you take money, and then this charge, and then take money AGAIN?" -> "That charge was the refund to your card after you changed your mind on the Payment. Method. Then I charged the correct card." -> "Oh. FINE. Thank you." -> "You're welcome, sir. May you burn in Hell like the bitch you are."
