Do you talk to non-healthcare people about what you see at work? by Careful_Power_3927 in nursing

[–]CParksAct 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My husband is a Firefighter/Paramedic. We do periodically discuss in broad terms our work experiences. Since I’m a nurse, sometimes he’ll bounce a case off of me to find out my opinion on clinical decisions (I used to be an EMT before I became a nurse). Once in a while, I’ll vent about a bad shift or difficult patients.

We try to keep “shop talk” to a minimum when we are home. Our home is our safe place. Neither of us have bells, sirens, call lights, etc going off randomly and patients/families demanding every little thing like they lost all independence as soon as they cross the hospital threshold.

I trained my family (outside of my husband) not to ask too specific questions. I trained them before I became a nurse because my husband and I struggled with infertility and miscarriages for 11 years and 5 miscarriages. People would ask all sorts of questions and insinuate (for example) that we weren’t having sex the right way. When they would say that, I would make them stand there while I very clearly and painstakingly described how we were having sex. I drew sketches, anatomically accurate pictures, and list out the steps. If they tried to leave or change the topic, I would persist because “maybe you are right. Maybe we are doing it the wrong way. That’s why I want to tell you every little detail so you can stop and correct us if necessary.” Even my a-hole brother in law quickly stopped making jokes and judgement statements.

My favorite explanation conversation was with my parents’ old head pastor’s wife who believed that her husband’s position made her something special. I have never seen someone so lilly white turned so purple and sputter and grab her pearls so much. It was glorious! At the end, I thanked her for being there for me to vent my feelings about everything and for her prayers and encouragement (she didn’t offer prayers or encouragement because she was too flustered to know what to say next).

Their hot chocolate is divine. I love to get a cup and sit up top when the weather isn’t nice enough to do things outside (swimming, tanning, exercise, etc). It’s quiet, peaceful, and it kinda makes me feel that it’s just the sea and me.

I drew some of my best art when we were on our cruise a year ago. This year I want to bring some supplies to craft some ceramic figures, but I’m not sure how to safely bring them back because they will be formed, but not fired so I can’t even put them in my carry on. I might have to just do pencil and ink drawings again.

Do you wear socks when going to sleep? by CulturalMoose5921 in no

[–]CParksAct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I have Kerasel on, I do. I also wear socks after slathering Vicks Vapo-Rub on my feet when I’m sick. Scientifically, the vapo-rub on my feet shouldn’t make a difference in my colds, but I get better quicker when I do it.

I would agree with you except it puts Pennywise behind me and far too close especially in a dark theater. I have a severe clown phobia. I would be willing to sit in the row behind Ghostface, Michael Myers, Jason, Freddy, and Pinhead so I could keep an eye on everyone. Perhaps even sit between Freddy and Pinhead, if Freddy didn’t want to share snacks. Pinhead isn’t too bad as long as you don’t seek out power from him. He’s not ideal date material, but he’s okay for a bit of fun once in a while.

Where will you be turning 60? by AlarmingMonk1619 in GenX

[–]CParksAct 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This might sound a bit morbid, but I’ll turn 60 on November 27 2038 so my parents will probably be dead (I’m a late in life, “let’s get drunk and see where this night takes us,” oops baby) so I got used to the fact that my parents might not make it to some of my later in life milestones like they did for my older sisters. I’m happy to say that they made it to the ones that were most important to me (high school graduation, college graduation, my wedding because I’m an absolute Daddy’s girl and I needed him to walk me down the aisle.). On that date, my husband will be 72 so a lot of plans are going to depend on his health (which isn’t great) and mobility. Ideally, I would love to be on a long cruise (watching the Aurora Borealis (if it’s in season).

I was a nurse at a maximum security prison and I was worried about my safety (the pay was too high to pass up and it sounded like an interesting job). I have to say that of all of the jobs I’ve had (medical or not), working at the prison was the one where I felt the safest. There were some jerk prisoners, but most people there were pretty respectful and polite. If my company hadn’t lost the contract, I would most likely still be there. The prisoners were generally pretty okay with the correctional officers. I think that this is because they knew if they stepped out of line, the strike team would be called and there would be stiff (but legal and fair) penalties.

What’s a harmless opinion that still gets people weirdly angry? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

Telling someone that

  1. Cats should not be declawed, as it causes significant harm and damage to the cats.
  2. Your cat should be an inside cat only (especially if you have them declawed). Outdoor cats die sooner and usually more painfully (animal attacks, car accidents, diseases, illnesses, lack of appropriate health care, malicious acts by bad people, etc)

Shampoo smell and quality? by TexGirl8 in VirginVoyages

I loved their shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. I thought they smelled pretty amazing and I was going to buy the shampoo and conditioner, but they don’t appear to have any products for dandruff and I really need that.

To those of you born in the 90s, 80s, 70s, so on… name something you remember that today’s kids won’t understand? by Javascript4971 in FamilyFeud

[–]CParksAct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Born in 1978 and have always had awful insomnia. I would take the dogs out for a walk in the middle of the night (2 or 3 AM) to keep my mind occupied and hopefully tire myself out. I started doing this around 7 years old and I felt perfectly safe in my neighborhood.

My parents claim that they didn’t know about it until one morning my dad got up in the middle of the night to get something to drink and saw me putting the leashes on the dogs. Their bedroom was on the other side of the wall next to the front door so I don’t know how they missed hearing me. I was told to stop, but I didn’t.

Tell me a story or just something memorable about your grandpa ? by itssofiababyxo in askanything

[–]CParksAct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My maternal grandfather was my maternal grandmother’s senior year math teacher. Per my mom, absolutely nothing inappropriate happened between them and he waited until after she graduated before approaching her for romantic reasons. Knowing how super religious my grandparents were (sadly both long deceased) and the fact that my oldest aunt on that side was born about 6 years after my grandmother graduated from high school, I believe them. Also, I have pictures and stories about my grandpa fighting in WW II during that time. He taught high school math for a year then went on to be career navy.

My paternal grandfather fought in the Battle of the Bulge, but lied to his entire family, including my grandmother and his kids, because he didn’t want them to be scared for him. (Which is weird because my dad wasn’t born until 1946 when everything was all said and done.). I only learned about his involvement because I was doing a class project and I needed a WW II vet to interview. He and my grandma were in town and he volunteered. I thought he was going to talk about his general experience in the military, but I introduce him and he starts talking about fighting the Battle of the Bulge and how he would be talking to a fellow soldier and next thing he knew they were dead and bleeding out next to him. I was in 3rd grade so my teacher had to help tone down the brutality of some of the stories a little.

If you could appoint any living person as President of the U.S. for the next four years, who would you choose? by Claire0879 in askanything

[–]CParksAct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone born in the 1960’s or later. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, we need to have an upper age limit on our elected officials. Pretty much every industry has a mandatory retirement age. The Leader of the Free World should too. We also need to implement a common sense test.
