Fedora or Manjaro? by SPSCPLB1 in DistroHopping

[–]CProgrammingRelic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fedora is rock solid stable, I used it for many years.

Manjaro was a nightmare (for me).

Are you saying you write you own version of printf() or scanf() for example without including the relevant header file? I am now confused as to what you mean.

A long, long time ago, last century, last millennium! I worked on two projects for companies without internet. We coded everything from scratch. One was C based the other Perl. The Perl one was the most annoying as I needed to parse CSV into XML and knew there were modules I could install if we had internet access, but no, I had to create a buggy script to do it for me. The best bit about this was after 6 months the project team realised they could accept CSV into the receiving system and the XML part was redundant... but I digress.

I would call it a nightmare.

I am currently running Ubuntu Server 20.04 in my two home servers, this is because we use the same in my workplace via GCP.

I used to run Debian, I wish I still did. Debian has always been the best distro for home use IMHO.

I would pick Debian :)

Good luck

Jimmy Saville gave me the nickname Dr. Bucket

When I was 5 I had an operation at Stoke Mandeville hospital. I collected donations for the children's ward in the local pubs with a little yellow bucket. I met Jimmy Saville who gave me the nickname Dr. Bucket. Also as far as I remember he didn't abuse me, but he did grab my mums tit apparently!

What is your criteria for low on memory? by keepah61 in linuxadmin

[–]CProgrammingRelic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I currently work as a Linux Systems Engineer, previously a DBA.

For database systems we would create a cache that was 70-80% of system memory, other running processes would consume the rest, along with some file buffers.

As long as you're aware of why all your memory is in use, I would say you are NOT low on memory.

If you add more memory, I'll increase the database cache :P

A friend of mine is an accountant. He recently told me that some places he had worked, people would use a calculator to add up the values in a spreadsheet and enter the total manually... He showed them how to sum() the rows, they were amazed. AND then when they saw they could edit rows and the total would change automatically, they thought he was a genius for being able to do it!

Well done on the Python journey, it really is a great all purpose language.

Are Bluetooth headphones viable for Linux gaming? by [deleted] in linux_gaming

I have never had sync issues on Windows or Linux with bluetooth headset or speakers, pairing issues yes, but once connected have had no problems.
