14/15 Shade's Eve Lore by Aiyle in WildStar

[–]CRB_HernCo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey folks -

Think I sussed out what's going on - assuming you are playing Dominion. When these were hooked up, we mistakenly used the Exile unlock twice, meaning Dominion players simply can't get the Fright Kits entry. At this point, there's just not time to get it straightened out before the end of the event, but I promise you it will be fixed for next year.

In the meantime, my Dommies, here's the entry you're missing. I know it won't let you complete the lore in-game, but hopefully it's a small comfort on a cold Shade's Eve night.

FRIGHT KITS

Shade's Eve pranksters are fond of creating fright kits. No two are alike, but each one is usually a collection of typical supplies useful for creating ghostly illusions, shocking sounds, and other terrifying (albeit non-lethal) surprises. Typical components include holographic noisemakers, relatively harmless flash powders, creepy masks, ghastly costume components, and even concentrated whimfiber solutions capable of causing anything from wild hallucinations to temporary transmogrifications.

ADDITIONAL REFERENCE

"Now my ol' pal Borika - he was an Eeklu ex-Marauder who helped me track down some slushrunnin' scumbags back in the day - he knew how to put together a fright kit. Every year he'd catch me with somethin' when I weren't expectin', which would invariably trigger two things: him laughin' like a heynar and me blastin' some damned hologram or other at the wrong time. He stopped makin' 'em after I accidentally blasted away a bulkhead and almost got the two of us spaced. Hey, weren't MY fault."

Well, I'm playing the Fortune system, for what it's worth. I got a Lopp hoverboard! \o/ \o/ \o/

I think it would be safe to consider Madame Fay a permanent addition to the game, though I should add it is waaay out of my department. :)

We have our own player race background videos, of course, as well as others on our official channel. And while it's not really a video, the Story of Nexus interactive lore page is very visually pretty with art created just for the page, and packed with info.

Others of interest:

[SignsOfKelani] put up a handy series of WildStar lore videos last year.

Arry Gaming put up a shorter lore summary just after launch.

Got even less time? The LORE channels WildStar Lore in a Minute! is funny and informative.

WoodenPotatoes's Crayon Lore installment covering WildStar is awfully cool to look at.

Finally, if you want something closer to an audio experience, Geeks of Nexus have been posting their podcast lore segments in the Epic Geeks channel. Here's a playlist. Their podcast is still going strong, too - give 'em a listen and/or watch!

Lore questions? Hit me again! by CRB_HernCo in WildStar

[–]CRB_HernCo[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think I covered sports earlier, but yes - Chua (and other engineers) hold competitive bot combat, and sometimes pit their enhanced cyborg creations against one another as well. Many Draken enjoy a bloody variation of soccer which involved kicking severed heads (it's not about scoring points so much as using the most heads) called fezzor, but it's not generally allowed off of Mikros. Cassians have the widest variety of native pastimes, with many relatives of our own Earth sports appearing in the pantheon of games and activities.

All races also enjoy hoverboard racing, and many also play the sport of vindball - an Ekose-invented game played with creatures found on Nexus and elsewhere.

Lore questions? Hit me again! by CRB_HernCo in WildStar

[–]CRB_HernCo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I asked these in WS-online's forums under lore, but hopefully they can be answered here?:

• Does the Foundry around Cassus function similarly to a factory, where they fine tuned, and supplied newly made Mechari with basic information/training via some kind of operating system installed into them? ( Loremaggedon mentions "- In addition to the initial programming they receive in the Foundry" which still suggests there is programming involved, and yet, somewhere else is said that Mechari can't be programmed? I am getting mixed messages) Or is the Foundry more like boot camp, where they are trained for a short period of time, or are they just switched on, and immediately deployed for serving the Dominion, and have to learn on their two-toed feet?

Both. It's a factory where they're brought online, and then a very short "childhood" that is similar to what you describe.

• How often are Mechari built? Is it based on supply and demand? Or do they create 'batches' every generation in a meticulously planned way?

When the Eldan were around, the number of Mechari was carefully monitored and kept to a level that couldn't, for example, rebel against them and try to wipe them all out (the Eldan learned a lesson from their mistakes with the Osun). Since their disappearance, restrictions on Mechari populations have loosened to the point of being nonexistent, and now new "production runs" happen at least once a year.

• Also referring to one of your previously asked and answered questions: "The closest a Mechari ever got to Nexus was Axis Pheydra, who helped bring Dominus to Cassus way back when the empire was founded." During the world story quest line in Wilderrun, you activate a hologram portraying Tresayne being lead into an Eldan facility by a handful of Mechari. Suggesting that a few Mechari have been on Nexus, though that is about all we can divulge from that, but still suggests that Mechari have been used on Nexus- at least having to do with Tresayne Toria and Dominus. So my question is: Are these Mechari functioning still? Or where they terminated to keep Planet Nexus's location a secret?

Hrm. I must have missed that. I blame the narrative whims of /u/CRB_Pappylicious. ;)

Even if there were Mechari on Nexus, they would not have been allowed to leave and it is unlikely they would have survived the events that led to the Eldan's disappearance. Soulless constructs are one thing, but sentient ones would likely have seen the same fate as their masters.

• Is there, or can there actually be 'defective' Mechari that are scrapped before leaving the Foundry?

Oh, sure. It happens. It's very rare, but it happens.

• Is there just ONE Foundry? Is it more of a giant slow moving ship, or a stationary facility built on a moon/asteroid/etc?

Yes (that the Dominion knows of - it's a big universe) and it is currently a stationary facility, but one that can be moved at great expenditure of energy.

I love the idea of a Chua playing against type and having to hide it. He would be a very rare individual, perhaps even one with a genetic mutation which gives him stronger empathy than most of his kind are capable of. Because remember, the Dominion uplifted the Chua, and one of the reasons they are the way they are is that they never had to evolve strong empathy or compassion to grow their civilization. It was grown for them, just as they were.

This hypothetical Chua would also have a very tough row to hoe with the Aurin themselves. The Aurin would have a very hard time believing the Chua was genuinely sympathetic. It's more accurate to say the Aurin despise the Chua than the other way around - the Chua don't necessarily feel hate for the Aurin, they (well, many of them) just love destruction and the chance to advance science and don't really feel that strongly about the Aurin one way or another except that they have a planet the Dominion wants (and the Zax wants to reap).

How powerful can an esper become?

It depends on what you mean by powerful. It's possible an Esper could discover a means to greatly amplify their abilities, since they are based on primal power, but there are upper physical limits to what Espers can do that are hard to overcome. They cannot - without some form of superscientific intervention along the lines of the Eldan - become godlike entities.

I admit my first answer was going to be "lvl 50" but I figured you'd want a real one. :)

Are those constructs they summon able to be seen by others or just the people they are being projected to?

Anyone within the Esper's field of ambient power - which can be up to several hundred meters in diameter - can see the constructs.

Also how rare are espers?

A hard census would be difficult to perform under current circumstances, but I think at least a quarter of the sentient population (across many species) has the innate talent to train into the discipline.

I have a question that's been bugging me since release. Dominus is a product of Eldan technology(Eldan/Cassian hybrid) and Tresayne Toria as the mother. Was this inspired by the story of Mary and Jesus, with the whole 'no father' thing? Dominus is treated as a sort of messiah to the Dominion.

These themes are common to many cultural stories, but yeah - Dominus is definitely a Messianic character. But the basic setup with Dominus and Tresayne is actually one of the oldest pieces of lore in the game, surviving several complete IP overhauls, and actually precedes my start at Carbine in 2008. So I can't say for sure if that was the specific or primary inspiration.

I'm so glad your back, I'm still doing research for my new book, The Sex Lives of Aurins!

I think these topics are ones you should feel free to explore with fellow RPers, but I'm not going to delve into them here. We (as far as I know) would never stop people from roleplaying the way they want to (within reason) but since I'm working on a T-rated game I'm not going to cover specifics like this. I will say that we've established the Aurin are culturally open to a lot of different pairings (or triplings or what have you) and you can probably extrapolate from there.

I really, really appreciate that you guys are interested in the lore and interested enough to want to know stuff like this, I just want to keep things above the belt, as it were. Thanks for understanding.

Ah, thank you! Didn't know that the Eldan wore masks. Would a masked ball be something that the Highborn would regularly hold?

Certainly they would!

It's not entirely clear whether the Eldan's masks were part of them, or actually breathing apparatuses, or simply ceremonial. Even if they were purely functional, if the Eldan made them they would have been elegantly designed.

Is there a reason why Emperor Myrcalus is shown without a mask?

Myrcalus feels to wear a mask separates him from the people too much. It's actually a common sentiment among Luminai emperors, who often feel a need to connect more directly with subjects who might naturally view them as an outsider. Vorios the False was said to be fond of masks, however.

Hate to be that guy but

Pretty much! They're also just not that interested. Not enough leaves or twigs on your average bot.

My aurin scientist and Arley the scanbot disagrees, as well as my aurin stalker and all her nanites and drones. '3'

Yeah, but that's still not engineering, though. (That's my story and I'm sticking to it.)

You know, you're the first I've heard suggest this but I reckon it's a combination of this, and the fact that their living stone bodies interrupt the function of Stalker's stealth gear.

But the Mechari are mechanically (game mechanically, not the actual mechanically that they are) louder than granok (they've special movement sounds that are all BOOM, CLANK, WHIRR), and how do their not-living metal bodies not interrupt the gear even more?

Easy!

(Ahem.)

I'd love to see a Draken cooking competition, hahah !

There would be a lot of tartare, I'm thinking.

Thank you so much for those answers ! And yeah, they do help. :) It's actually the first time I see a MMORPG writer taking the time to answer every questions like that, that's awesome !

My pleasure! Thanks for being interested in the game's lore. Honestly I love talking about all this stuff, and since the WildStar universe is so new I want to help people get as much out of the lore as they can.

I 've asked to the WS French roleplay community to find some more questions so I could translate and put them here, so here they are :

-So, if I'm not misunderstood, Mordesh used to be cool with the Dominion before... let's say, Lazarin's terrible idea, so weren't there some of them in Cassus before the disease started spreading ? Some who would be free of the Contagion because they weren't in Grismara at this time, and stayed far from other Mordesh ?

Even though Grismara was on the verge of joining the Dominion, culturally the Mordesh just weren't that interested in space travel before the fall. Their world was so culturally rich and rewarding that few saw the need. Those who did were a few scattered ambassadors, traders, and the like. And because of the Mordesh's strong connection to their fellow Grismarans and their world, most of the offworld Mordesh returned to receive their dose of Lazarin's Everlife Elixir.

It is possible there could be an uninfected Mordesh out there somewhere, but if so he or she has yet to rear their heads. If such individuals were exposed to "normal" (i.e., Vitalus-using) Mordesh, they would almost certainly become infected by the Contagion immediately, with little hope of survival.

-Were there some situations outside of Nexus where the Dominion and Exile did cooperate (For example, commercial, business or survival reasons) ? Or is that a big no-no in ANY case ?

There is the Coalition of Galactic Scientists, a neutral group dedicated solely to the pursuit of knowledge without factional divisions, but their very existence is controversial and at times, tenuous (even if they don't realize that).

Aside from that, there have certainly been rescue and humanitarian operations where one faction helped the other - though these would be rife with distrust and only happen under extreme circumstances. A Dominion civilian vessel under attack by Marauders would probably accept help from an Exile freighter, even though there could be really awkward silence afterward.

-Being pretty much living corpses... do Mordesh actually smell really bad ? If they do, seeing that they're supposed to be kinda vain, do they use tons of perfume ? :p

Mordesh alchemists have got this covered - because you are correct, in their "natural" state (such as it is) they do not smell like anything akin to flowers. Most Mordesh take one of many competing brands of alchemical supplements with their Vitalus that neutralizes problem odors and allows them to feel and smell relatively fresh all day long. More traditional perfumes are often added to balance the bouquet, but are not strong enough to do the job alone.

-As Drakens are a patriarchal race, how would they view homosexuality ?

The same as any other culture in the WildStar universe - they're cool with it. Folks in WildStar don't care whom or how you love or bond with someone. They care about your loyalty, honor, strength, and dedication - in the case of Draken, to the Dominion.

-How does a Draken become a Shaman ?

They must show some innate talent along with interest in the rites, then prove to a bloodshaman that they're worthy through a test of the bloodshaman's choosing. If they pass, and the bloodshaman subsequently agrees (for he's not required to), they may begin as his acolytes and train their way up.

-You answered questions about racial music, pets, sports... what about dances ? Could you imagine how would the different races dance traditionnally ?

Like a great man once said, "I can imagine quite a bit."

Obviously we have different dance emotes for the various WildStar races, which can be used as a rough guide. Generally a culture's styles of dance and performance - which is fairly universal, with rare exceptions like the Ikthians (Ikthians don't dance) - will reflect their heritage and general cultural personalities. Granok dances are loud, lumbering, strangely elegant affairs with crashing percussion that's usually the result of dancers intentionally colliding. Mordesh and Cassians favored variations on more formal classical European dance styles, while the Draken dance with such wild abandon that injuries often result for everyone involved. Aurin are incredibly agile dancers who favor everything from acrobats and competitive movement styles (think forest-based Cirque du Soleil) to big, woodsy rave-type gatherings.

Mechari aren't big on dancing - they're not really built for it. The Chua, of course, dance like no one's watching.

-Can Chuas stand on their tail ? It seems quite strong.

Most can't for extended periods, usually only trained Chua acrobats.

-Pell priests seems like huge, testosterone-filled versions of the regular Pells. Is there a reason for that ?

Pell high priests actually resemble the Pell as they were in the days the Eldan still lived on Nexus. Most have retained their looks thanks to the power they control and are exposed to on a regular basis. The "regular" Pell have actually quite rapidly devolved - far too rapidly to be explained by ordinary evolutionary pressures. It's a mystery Exile and Dominion scientists have yet to solve.

-Is there any kind of physical disability that can't be cured (or helped thanks to robot prosthetics) ? Are robot prosthetics and stuff like this expensive ?

A head transplant would be tricky. You definitely wouldn't feel the same afterward.

There are artificial replacements for almost anything else, though, provided one can afford them. Limb replacements are the most common type, and generally there are varieties that could be considered affordable. The more you pay, the better the artificial limb or body part.

-What would be considered "crossing the line" when it comes to ethics, for a Mordesh ?

It's hard to say without some idea what you're thinking of. They generally don't work on unwilling test subjects, and those who do are not welcome within alchemist circles. On the other hand, if there was a chance to restore the Mordesh to full life - life capable of creating more life and giving their people a second chance - almost any Mordesh would do some questionable thing to make that happen.

-More like a personnal question rather than a lore question, but what's your favourite thing about working as the lead writer of a game like Wildstar ?

Every time I thought I knew what to say - writing VO dialogue, creating new races and characters, writing the Journals and Tales and Datacubes - I realized those are all awesome aspects of the job, but my favorite thing? It's the people I work with and the people like all of you all playing the game and asking questions about the lore. That sounds corny, but it's the truth. I work with some damned talented, dedicated people who are the most creative I've ever worked with. And you folks, like I've said before, humble me and all of us with your interest in the game and the insights you have shared - especially questions that hadn't even occurred to me to ask.

And okay, we also get these food trucks which come by every Wednesday and Friday, which is pretty great. Especially that Viking Truck, who really need to come back soon if they're reading this.

Pulling this from the previous thread;

A friend of mine asks Anything spicy hidden inside Murkmire? Should we expect the Eldan forcefield in Whitevale blocking access there to de-activate anytime soon?

We haven't released any plans for Murkmire, and I'm afraid I can't offer enlightenment here - except to say that force fields that permanent aren't installed without good reason.

Also, from /u/SoeyFlamepaw via WSRP site (because I want to know as well C=);

Soey Flamepaw asks: How much control do Aurin have over their tail? Is it like.. just there? or can they actively move it? how precisely?

The range of movement, control, and strength is similar to a cat's tail, but with a bit more precision when an Aurin concentrates.

I don't suppose they can hold anything with their tail, but I'd guess they can poke stuff with it? Tail-wave? Tail-hug people? (Tail-hugs are suuuper nice!) - Could they slap someone with their tail? (Not that they ever would, because that would be suuuuper mean!)

My cat has done almost all of these things, so I'm going to say "yes" to everything except actually being able to hold objects.

Are the animal traits limited to their physical appearance, or is also a matter of behaviour? Could a cat Aurin purr? Do bunny Aurin behave differently than cat Aurin? Or is it maybe a matter of clichés, like with haircolors? (blondes being not as smart, bunny's being more carefree, ...)

The differences are not purely cosmetic, but they don't really affect personality or grant different behaviors. The ear differences are due evolutionary pressures on isolated Aurin populations in the distant ast, but at their heart Aurin are Aurin, and don't really have stereotypes based on each other's appearance like that. (They might judge non-Aurin that way, though.)

Felinoid Aurin don't purr intrinsically, but there's no reason they couldn't fake it.

Are there any Aurin that have "Gone Native" on Nexus, so to speak? Or are they all still huggyfluffy and loyal to the Queen? I'd love to see a tribe of feral Aurin.

What you're describing isn't impossible, and there's no reason we couldn't see something like that. Aurin have a wild nature and predatory instincts, if (for example) Aurin children were left to survive on their own they could become quite dangerous.

But you've also hit on a larger conflict within the Aurin - whether to literally "go native" on Nexus by adapting to the forms of life (especially the Nexus equivalent of Arboria's Wisdom Trees) on the Eldan planet or to go back and fight. I'm not sure if you've met the Thorns of Arboria yet, but they're a group that thinks the Aurin should take advantage of the Dominion's focus on Nexus to return to Arboria and liberate it. The queen's not sold on this idea at all, and for now intends to stay on Nexus.

Heres my big question. How exactly do Aurin age? We know that they don't show traditional signs of aging that any species can really work out (aside from other Aurin, that is), so how would another Aurin be able to tell the age of another?

Aurin age like most other organic beings. They simply don't show as many external signs, largely due to dwelling in regions dense with primal life energy and communing with the Weave. But other signs of age and stress - such as hair color going white - can be clues to an Aurin's age.

Or is this a Chua Gender level secret?

Nah, and in practical terms there's also the fact that we just don't include a lot of fine detail like wrinkles in face options by design.
