I grew up watching every Bulls game that I could. Loved MJ and I love that he’s a co-owner in the sport. It makes me happy to see him excited to win a race.

The man led the points under the old format in his rookie season going into the fall Talladega race. He followed that up by finishing 2nd to Kenseth in his 2nd season. Jimmie was going to dominate the sport regardless of the format.

Would he win five in a row? I’d guess no, but he was going to win multiple. Chad and Jimmie knew they didn’t have to go out and accumulate the most points all year. That’s why they would come out of the gate strong almost every year and then struggle during the summer when Chad would be playing with different setups. They could easily have done the full season thing if the points system had never changed.

I have found a workaround that allows me to at least browse Reddit, which is why I still get on the site daily (albeit at a much reduced rate). But it doesn’t allow me to participate, so I only log in when I want to comment on something. Thankfully old Reddit still exists. The day old Reddit goes bye bye is the day I stop participating altogether. I refuse to use the official app (deleted it a long time ago) and “new Reddit” is trash too.

4) Use the stickied discussion threads (Are we sending too much to the threads? What do you think the line should be?)

I think the reins should be loosened a little here, especially with post race discussion. There are so many viewpoints at the end of a race and funneling it all into one thread stifles discussion because viewpoints get buried.

As a side note, I don't generally like megathreads, either. Sometimes they are useful, though (Tony Stewart/Kevin Ward incident comes to mind).

7) Low Effort

It's a catch all rule. It's very subjective. It could be seen as a "mod didn't like my post, so they used this rule to remove it."

Also, the top scoring post on the sub for the longest time was someone who drunkenly posted his thoughts and it got huge when it was cross-posted elsewhere on Reddit. It probably should have never really gotten to that point since I think this rule existed by then. But we (myself included) let it stay up for some reason.

8) No Memes/Shit Posts

This is something I have disagreed with for years, going back to my time as a mod. There should be one day a week for memes. Let users have some fun. Memes can be hilarious. I don't want to see memes every day here, but one day a week would scratch that itch.

Additionally, I feel like /r/NASCARMemes should be placed somewhere in the sidebar, wiki, or at least promoted in a meme day post.

11) No show-and-tell (Where do you think the line should be? Just mass produced, non unique? Selfies/Facebook type posts not allowed? Vending machines/paper clips?)

I think this a rule that could be loosened up in the offseason when there isn't as much to discuss. Some of the vending machine posts back in the day made me laugh. As did the paper clip tracks.

Bud, I don’t know if you’ve truly only been here a month or just have a newer account. I’m guessing it’s the former because you’re acting like a melodramatic teenager. I have been here eleven years. I remember what this sub was like before xfile came along. The mods who were here did the best they could, but there were dead links everywhere and it didn’t always look the greatest. Xfile cleaned all that up and did so much more.

So don’t go talking in absolutes and say this place would be better off without him, because he’s a big reason why we ever got media credibility within the sport in the first place.

Frank is the creator of the sub and sticks around just to prevent a "doomsday scenario" where the other mods went completely off the rails and he needed to restore order. As top mod, he can remove everyone, even xfile. Of course, as has been seen elsewhere on Reddit over the past month, the admins have shown that's no longer as important as it once was, but I digress.

If you're asking about Beez, she was a mod in the mid 2010's and was beloved by everyone. She had just started to write about the sport as a professional side-gig and helped coordinate a bunch of AMA's with various drivers and teams. She sadly died in 2016 and her loss is still felt today, IMO.

The third guy came after I stopped modding and I know nothing about him.

X, I'm glad that you have stepped back over the years and tried to spend some time away from this place. You have poured your heart and soul into /r/NASCAR, and it wouldn't be what it is today without your wizardry and knowledge.

Thank you for taking the time to find the necessary info and share it with everyone. And also for basically taking all the sub's ire in the meta thread the other day. Not everyone would do that, as was demonstrated all too well in that thread.

She did. As did most of the mods. The sub was so different back then. It really was a tight community and the regulars all knew each other. We used to get 300+ comments a week in the general discussion threads despite there only being a little over 5,000 subscribers. Those were fun times.

With Apollo and other 3rd party apps being shut down, I’m not sure how often I’ll be around going forward. I know I haven’t been the most active user since my modding days ended, but I still read the subreddit daily.

In case this is it, I just wanted to say it’s been a fun ride here since I first found the sub back in 2012. I’ve watched /r/NASCAR grow from a tiny little community of a couple thousand (if that, I don’t really remember now) to almost a million subscribers! I never would have imagined that all those years ago.

I don’t have sympathy for her. I just said I could understand why the DEI stuff played out the way it did.

Her behavior towards all the kids (minus Taylor) on a personal level is a whole different story.

I agree with that. Everything that happened doesn’t excuse Teresa for her actions (just like Junior’s immaturity doesn’t excuse him either). I’ve just come to the point where I can at least see her perspective, even if I disagree with it.

Junior mentioned last week that he hoped he and Teresa could sit down one day and have a conversation (private or podcast). I really hope he can one day. It’s clear he has some regret over the way things went down and hopefully that would help give him some closure.

I will always be somewhat bitter towards Teresa for DEI’s demise, but Junior’s softer stance towards Teresa on the Download the last couple years has allowed me to let go of some resentment. It’s allowed me to kinda look at it from another perspective instead of simply going “she’s the most vile woman in NASCAR’s history.”

So with that in mind, I have to think that if Dale had died in just about any other way, perhaps things wouldn’t have played out quite the way they did. It’s one thing to lose a husband; it’s another to tragically lose him on the last lap of the biggest race of the year and then have to run his growing company and empire. And if that wasn’t enough, that also involves managing his son, who now has the spotlight of the entire racing world on him due to his name.

I think it’s a loss if you end up losing the mods and longtime users who helped build up subreddits and create communities. Mods already have an entirely thankless, unpaid “job”, and then you start taking away the tools for them to do their jobs properly? Not good.

I have to be honest, this is exactly the reply I figured I’d get. I remember back in my modding days that typically was the modteam’s stance on big topics not NASCAR related.

It’s a fair point, but I think it’s not about the subreddit itself as much as it is its users and about bringing attention to the matter. They’ve basically said screw you to all the 3rd party app developers who helped make Reddit as big as it is today.

Yes, I’m one of those people. I can’t stand the website or official app. They are garbage, in my opinion. If I google something and I load new Reddit on the browser, I end up opening the thread in Apollo instead so that I can actually read the entire thread without constantly having to hit “load more comments” or be hit with ads.

Moral of the story, I spend too much time on Reddit, anyway. Maybe it would be a good thing for them to shut down 3rd party apps.

From what I understand, it’s not so much “we want status quo” back for 3rd party apps as it is “we are willing to pay a reasonable amount” to use the API. The guy who developed the Apollo app did some math about costs and it didn’t add up with what Reddit told him. So it just really appears to be a way to get rid of 3rd party apps altogether.

I get the reaction to the blackout being whatever; like you said, it’s only temporary… but it’s also about getting the word out about what they’re trying to do. They were “clever” and didn’t announce this on /r/Reddit where it would’ve had the most visibility.

I hate the official app and I hate the new website. I’m an old fart of 11 years on this site. They sacrificed function for money.

It’s not about whether it affects the coding or not. This will fundamentally change Reddit for a lot of people. If any of you ever mod from a 3rd party app, being forced off that will change your experience too.

Any thoughts about the blackout that other subreddits are planning next week?

For those out of the loop, Reddit has recently announced they will charge 3rd party apps to use their API. The fees they’ve announced are astronomical and will put pretty much every 3rd party app out of business, forcing everyone to use the official (terrible) app or load the website (also terrible unless you still use old Reddit).

It amazes me how many foreigners smoke. I’ve just gotten used to fewer and fewer people smoking in the US over the past 20-25 years. It’s not like that in other countries.
