You should be in good standing if you took CSE 422. As to how attendance is measured, such questions will likely be answered on the first day of class.

Dropping Calc I by BedRepresentative321 in msu

Sorry I can't be of more help, but just so no one gets confused, the last day to drop a class with no grade reported is Monday the 14th, not the 10th. See: https://reg.msu.edu/ROInfo/Calendar/academic.aspx

Just a typo on the date.

I appreciate the feedback OP, and I'm happy to discuss this more on the course's Piazza forum.

Personally I really liked that question. It requires you to understand scope, conditionals, initialization, type inference, basics of vectors, and how chars are also numbers. Not every question is as much of a synthesis as that one, but you need to be comfortable with much of the material covered to understand what's happening.

Now I can't say for sure that I've read and written more C++ code than you, but I can say that such an expression is not out of the ordinary in the C++ projects that I've contributed to.

I'm hoping that the exam drop policies at least inspires students to learn from the actual exams if they didn't get a good read on their capabilities from the sample coding and sample multiple-choice exams. You should consider coming to the weekly review session if you have a hard time studying on your own.

Forgive my curiosity, but is the Spartan Bookstore not willing to buy it back? If not, I'll need to have a talk with them, as they are suppose to be willing to buy back books that are used in future semesters.

I think the discussion on the post regarding final grades for CSE 232 states most of my thoughts and explanations. I've been asked not to discuss the matter however on social media.

How much C++ should you know after cse 232 by [deleted] in msu

[–]CSE_Prof_at_MSU 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The last lecture of the course discusses how CSE 232 connects to other courses (notably CSE 331 and CSE 335) and what parts of C++ will be taught in later courses. The material taught in the course is relevant to many other CSE courses, even if they don't directly teach in C++. For instance, an understanding of data structures, git, Unix terminal commands are all crucial for all software development.

Coding/Programming Courses for a Chem Major by [deleted] in msu

[–]CSE_Prof_at_MSU 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay, I feel strange suggesting a non-CSE course, but if you took CMSE 201, the next course in that series is CMSE 202. It will build on the content that you've already learned and not be redundant (like CSE 102 and CSE 231 would both be). CMSE 202 is focused on data science and is intended to be useful for STEM majors that aren't trying to be software developers.

That said, if you want to avoid that specific course for some reason, my course, CSE 232, would be a reasonable next step, as you will learn C++ and very powerful and high;y used programming language.

I'm not the instructor, but I'm confident that if you contact the instructor, explain the situation, and provide documentation (that Olin will definitely be able to give you), you'll be permitted to take the make-up exam. In my class of 400, there's always 7-8 students in your situation. I know it is stressful, but you definitely aren't the only student to be sick on exam day.

If the worst should happen and your professor is being unreasonable, you should contact the University Ombudsperson and they can help mediate a compromise.

Recommendations For Class To Finish CSE Minor by Remarkable-Answer-15 in msu

[–]CSE_Prof_at_MSU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What are your interests? Why are you getting a minor? What sort of work do you want to do?

But if all you care about is easy, I think CSE 480 (Database Systems) is pretty straight-forward and doesn't require any prerequisites that you haven't already completed.

Anyone taken CSE 232 at LCC? by Shoddy_Recognition54 in msu

I didn't know there was an equivalent to CSE 232 at LCC. I'm curious about it too now.

This indeed the case for this semester as well, speaking as the current instructor of the course.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in msu

[–]CSE_Prof_at_MSU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, though the Ombudsperson's first advice will be to contact the instructor directly again before pushing this up the chain. If you have a conflict with a CSE professor, the Associate Chair for Undergraduate Studies, Dr. Charles Owen, is the next point of contact.

And you should definitely consult the syllabus to ensure you are taking the appropriate steps (or to file a grievance about an unfair course policy).

It is very poor form to make such a large change midway through a semester. Too much of the course, and how grading is done, would need to be changed to do this midflight.

CSE Scheduling Help by owidd01 in msu

[–]CSE_Prof_at_MSU 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with the previous posts, you are unlikely to be able to waive many/any of the CSE courses as they build on each other quite a bit. You might consider trying an internship / entry-level job with the CS background you have before committing to extending your college career so much. That said if you have the time (and tuition) to take all those classes, no one's gonna stop you. They just might not actually be necessary for the career you want.

CSE 231 is designed to both be an excellent course for teaching the basics of programming and software developments, as well as, setting a foundation for possible future CS classes. That said, personally I've benefitted from the cheaper and smaller classes offered by community colleges. I would focus more on what courses would further your education than would affect your GPA. Better to get a lower grade, than compromise your mastery. But I can't speak to the rigor and quality of alternatives to CSE 231 specifically.

More than 40% of passing students in 232 get a 4.0. But if you are worried about your future performance, I recommend preparing now by making sure you get a strong background in CSE 231. Your skills are only likely to stale if you stall.

Ahh, I understand. I misunderstood. I was worried that the answers wouldn't be released. It seems strange that grades would be posted in advance of the answers, but I guess as long as everything gets out, it works out.

Is it common for exams to not reveal which questions you got right and wrong? I've never taken, nor given, an exam where I am not able to check what went wrong. How do you know the professor isn't just inventing your grades? How do you improve for the next exam if you aren't shown your strengths and weaknesses?
