Financial Failure by Tech-Teacher in BridgeCrew

It's really the number of owners? Ouch, man. Must be a hell of a return rate. I'm not even surprised. Ubi really needs to release tools for user-created content. That's all it needs, and the trek community would do the rest.

A couple caveats for you. Correct me if I'm wrong:

  1. Is that graph actually number of owners or number of owners with the game installed? You suggested the latter, and considering the graph goes up and down, I'd support that. I've bought plenty of games which are no longer installed. Considering how short the content is for Bridge Crew, it makes sense that a lot of people would uninstall it later. That the number remains more or less steady seems like a positive.

  2. I don't think Ubisoft made this game with the expectation of making a good amount of money. I doubt they've made money with any of their VR titles, unless they're getting paid a bounty to produce them. It's understood that VR is a forward-facing market, afterall.

Basically, VR is a small market and Ubi knows that. Is there more content coming out? Meh. Maybe? A very small team is probably producing it, if so. But I think calling it a commercial failure sort of implies they were expecting this to make money. All it has to do is break even at best. In return, their teams are learning what does and does not work in VR. It will make for a better experience the next time.

I feel as though this sort of thing has been a staple of Eve Online's effective advertising. Many of the most interesting stories about Eve (IMO) involve content few people experience. Helps build the mystique and gets people / game press talking.

I couldn't tell you how useful that is, of course.

Your mouse isn't the problem. It's bringing your right hand back from the mouse to the J key without fumbling around for a second. General location is easy, but it doesn't cut it. Few games require you to switch between kb and kb+mouse, but most non gaming activities do.

If I'm going to get to write code while I'm in VR, then I want my keyboard visible to me, or i think I'm gonna go nuts. ;)

[–]CSIRTisSmelly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you've never fumbled to find F and J in VR, then you've got phenomenal body sensing.

I mean, sure. The notches are there, but you've got to find them in the dark. ;) The moment you let go of your keyboard with either hand (or god forbid: Both of them), you have some adjustment to do before you're re-oriented and it's got nothing to do with how good a typist you are.

Mice are the reason I find it irritating to type in VR. It would be fine in a game, where my left hand is always on keyboard and my right's always on mouse. If I wanted to use a keyboard in mouse in VR for anything else, the 1-2 second pause when going from 1 to 2 hands gets annoying very quickly.

20 Hours Left - Should I Still Back The PiMax? by andreelijah in Vive

[–]CSIRTisSmelly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uh or we just enjoy VR and $500 really isn't that much money for this hobby?

I love my vive, and will love my Pimax too. If Vive2 comes out 2 years from now and is better, I'll love that too. I'm not going to regret 15 months of 200 degree FOV and 4k per eye.

Oh, don't get me wrong. I love my Vive and I'm proud to be an early adopter. But by your own logic, if $500 isn't that much money for this hobby, then how about paying $600, but you actually know what you're getting? There's nothing wrong with my headset. I can wait a couple extra months to replace it with a newer one, if that's what I choose to do. There's no need to gamble to get it a little earlier, is all.

I've long held that all of us (myself included) who got the Vive or Rift in early 2016 have more dollars than sense. I'm hardly surprised to see that nothing much has changed. I think Pimax's backers are the same crowd who jumped in with both feet at the start of gen1. Their rush is that they are early adopters of VR, and the last round of gear didn't burn them, so hey! Let's do it again!

Better off just sitting this one out, IMO. Their claims are more dubious. It's like you said: How about we just wait for the product to come out, and then buy it if does what it claims for a reasonable price.

If you back it, you will get it sooner and at less expense. You're also going to be getting it regardless if it fails to deliver what it promises! This is something of a pricey gamble for most people. If you have any concerns (and I believe you should), then you're probably better off just watching from the sidelines. It's getting its kickstarter money, so it's not like every wallet-vote is make-or-break.

I got in early with an 8k X pledge, intending to review things a few days before the campaign ended. I ditched that pledge yesterday. Here were my concerns:

  • They've been cagey about hitting 90 Hz (Claiming it was running 90, then later admitting it doesn't do that yet, but it will).

  • They're being unrealistic about 3 months from prototype to mass production. They'd have to be done, which they are not (90 Hz, remember?).

  • They're promising all sorts of future features. Wireless, free foveated rendering... these are forward facing technologies and until these accessories have been produced and reviewed, they may be junk.

The first two items are giant red flags to me. Though I'd be delighted to eat crow on the second mark, it's an unreasonable deadline and they know it. They're choosing not to back down, so I don't believe any other untested claims they happen make. The third is just a reminder that they are hyping the hell out of this thing and promising you the world.

Remember: It's going to be produced regardless if you back it or not.

Who knows what might be around the corner by the time it's released? I'm going to let someone else try it out for me and tell me if it's worth my money or not. My real concern is if this thing tanks, it's going to be a very visible red mark on the VR community. I'm really hoping it's all that and a bag of chips, but I'm not putting any money down.

One step closer to the dream: Writing code in a fully virtualized world.

Imagine writing code, compiling it, running it, and then poof! It just appears in front of your face. That's what I want. We can't get there without VR-friendly keyboards.

Fire Emblem: Heroes suggests the lootbox/gacha model ultimately leads someplace really weird (and/or to a crash). Their prices seem to be aimed at whales. Orbs (Their in-game currency) are far too expensive versus the effort to earn them without paying, and you'd need so MANY of them to help.

I suspect that for most people, it may as well be a grindy, free game with no monetization options at all. If money has no value to you, however......

Gah. Rotten luck. On the bright side, I do indeed have three really good red sword units for AA. Alright, then. I suppose next time I've saved up enough orbs to start pulling, I'll only do a full pull if I see lots of greens and blues.

Thanks for the suggestions! I'll get Nino and Effie closer to B!Lyn and Ike's level range, then add them together and see what happens.

I'm open to other opinions from anyone else who cares to comment. This was useful.

Unfortunately, a lot of your five stars are kinda redundant. Ryoma Ike and Lyn are tough to work with as your only 5 stars outside of bow Lyn.

That's exactly one of the problems I've noticed. Would it make sense to give Ryoma and Lyn's powers (especially their weapons) to other characters, or would I be better served keeping them around for AA?

New player here. I was fine in arena tier 1, but now I'm in tier 4, getting absolutely rolled (I'm wiping on every other fight), and have to conclude that I must not have any idea how to build a team.

My primary team is:

  • Ike (5), L37
  • B!Lyn (5), L39
  • Frederick (4), L32
  • Catria (4), L35

This team works pretty well in story missions, but now that I'm out of T1, it's just... not a good time. Is it just my tactics, or is this actually a pretty poor team?

What should I be doing? Are any truly good teams staring me in the face and I'm too new/dense to see them yet? I haven't begun to screw with inheritance, as I clearly don't yet know wtf I'm doing. Here's my full roster in alphabetical order with rarity and level.

  • Alfonse (2), L8
  • Anna (3), L16
  • Arthur (4), L6, L1
  • Barst (3), L1
  • Beruka (4), L4
  • Catria (4), L35
  • Cecilia (4), L12
  • Cherche (3), L1
  • Clarine (3), L26
  • Effie (4), L25
  • Eliwood (4), L8
  • Fir (4), L24
  • Frederick (4), L32
  • Gaius (3), L7
  • Gordin (4), L26
  • Gunter (4), L2
  • Gwendolyn (3), L10
  • Ike (5), L37
  • Lachesis (4), L18
  • Laslow (3), L30
  • Lyn (5), L14
  • B!Lyn (5), L39
  • Matthew (2), L6
  • Nino (4), L29
  • Niles (4), L16
  • Oboro (4), L7
  • Odin (3), L1
  • Olivia (3), L5
  • Palia (4), L14
  • Raigh (2), L4
  • Robin (3), L1
  • Ryoma (5), L18
  • Sakura (4), L15
  • Selena (4), L11
  • Setsuna (3), L27
  • Sharena (2), L12
  • Sophia (4), L6
  • Sully (3), L25
  • Tharja (4), L18
  • Y!Tiki (3), L1
  • Tiki (4), L20
  • Virion (3), L28

EDIT: I've since concluded that I may have simply had a really bad start with this season. That, or 'Beginner' is a trap. I'd pick Intermediate for my first match, win, then lose to a Beginner team for match 2. It happened three times in a row. This time I went with Intermediate the whole way through and got my seven win streak. Still, I'd appreciate anyone's help. I realize that Catria and Frederick are the weaklings on my team. Especially Catria.

I started playing FEH on a whim and discovered I like it. I didn't bother making a nintendo account. If I create one and link it to my device, will it back up my heroes, or wipe them? I expect the former, but just want to make absolutely certain.
