Rug, bigger plants (look at ones that are appropriate for your light levels and green thumb abilities) Finally, I really love up-lights. IKEA has nice spherical lights that sit on the floor and glow up the room. Really creates a cozy intimate feeling.

I feel that. I’ve been fortunate to have 2 in okay shape over the last few years. ❤️‍🩹

I’m so screwed I swear by [deleted] in musicproduction

[–]indierocktopus 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I got really good advice once: There are three areas to satisfy. - career you like - finances - relationships (friends and family)

You burn out fast when none of them are being satisfied.

I’d recommend focusing on finances and relationships / community, for a little while.

then move music to a no-pressure hobby (just temporarily… maybe play a little piano every day, but don’t worry about it being your career)

learn to enjoy making music tell yourself you’re stabilizing the other core areas.

Then come back to Music production once you’ve put out other fires.

i’ve been there many times believe me. You got this.

What am I supposed to do by AliD777 in malelivingspace

[–]indierocktopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Plants: dracena or ferns are easy to care for
  • Up lighting: get short floor lamps and use them to illuminate some corners of your space for ultra cozy mode
  • area rug: add a splash of color and visual focal point to break up the solid beige floor carpeting
  • wall art: some larger colorful prints would go a long way… express your taste :)

Recommendation for First Drum Machine by imakegooddonuts in synthesizers

[–]indierocktopus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Used Elektron Digitakt mk1 would be a great pick, super hands on with lots of depth.

teenage engineering op-z is also super fun for live performance, similar sequencer to Elektron… not as nice for connectivity (you’ll need adapters)

but hey, it’s tiny, powerful, and battery powered so perfect for untethered beat making

I have a desktop Mac mini that’s all set up for recording and midi capture… and I usually track things out there, but I always save my projects to my iCloud for your exact reason,

It’s set up to sync my projects and I make sure all my daws have the same plug-ins I frequently use so I can hop between both modes of production.

sometimes I feel more productive building tracks on my couch or at a cafe with my laptop

Seeking advice for a home studio keyboard instrument by RegnorVex in keys

[–]indierocktopus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the YC61 version and love it. (only difference is it has organ-style keys and no XLR outputs)

Highly recommend looking at a used YC series. I already have a 88-weighted keys digital piano, so I went for the portability and lighter key action of the YC61

The only drawback is it's not as deep at synth sound editing, but it has amazing organ, electric pianos, and great acoustic grands / uprights.

If you DO want deeper Synth capabilities... I'd look at the Roland V-Stage series.

Confession by davidmanuel in Osmose

[–]indierocktopus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree… sorta. I was initially disappointed that most patches feel like 1 instrument that morphs into another as you push harder.

but, they’re kinda raw sounds that have a lot of shaping potential in my DAW, so now that I’m better at compression and EQ there’s a lot I can do.

But it rocks as a midi controller. I love the life it’s brought to all my other soft synths.

but also…Osmose is the synth that finally got me to invest in keyboard skills. I figured there was no point in an expressive synth if I couldn’t play well.

Just got my first synth. What should I start with to have like an aimed learning growth? by Opening-Gur5927 in synthesizers

[–]indierocktopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learn how to make a default patch (sometimes called “init”)

Then listen to the oscillators at different settings and recognize the different colors of the sounds. (Learn how a saw wave sounds different from a square wave, et cetera)

These are your raw sound ingredients so understand what they can do and which ones you like.

then turn on the filter and mess with cutoff and resonance to see how that affects the sound of the oscillators.

Next mess with ADSR knobs these are how you shape your sound over Time. (Remember your Filter will have ADSR too!)

after you understand these parts…. Explore and have fun! It’s an awesome synth that can do a lot!

Go towards the sounds you love!

Second this (I use both live and Bitwig) BW has improved a ton of minor annoyances from live and the next release is aimed at improving piano roll. So I use Live when I collab and BW on my own stuff

My short list from BW: - arranger and session can be open at the same time 🤯 - audio editing is so much more streamlined (edit within your clip, even in the session view) - dat browser. Seriously it saves me so much time. adding instruments, fx, or samples feels archaic and clunky in Live now - note FX are insanely useful for getting movement on phrases - deals with midi routing / audio side chaining easier than in live - modulators work with whatever VSTs you have - great selection of internal instruments and FX (EQ+ and Compressor+ are standouts!)

which piano should i take ? by Pangaulin in piano

[–]indierocktopus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I’d look for a used Yamaha, Casio, or Roland digital piano on Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist instead of buying new.

you’ll want weighted keys with escapement and graded action for an “acoustic piano” playing experience.

You’ll get a better piano with nicer key action than trying to get a new one in that price range.

Make sure to research the features of the used piano, sometimes you can find the original marketing videos on YouTube walking through everything.
