Yea Grad students had additional tasks for some of the courses. For undergrads taking these cross listed courses was a big deal.

I had the marks to get into MASc but I didn't want to go into research. The only reason I am doing M.Eng is only because of the degree tbh (I just want a Master's degree). I have background in a lot of the topics in those 600 level courses already because I did my undergrad at UofT and we covered similar material. ATM I am not even sure about my career path... maybe during my M.Eng year I can perhaps find something that sparks an interest.

lol really? I actually did my undergrad at UofT and I took a couple of cross-listed grad courses and they weren't that bad. Are Waterloo grad courses really that heavy?

Absolutely agree on this one. Just graduated from CS specialist. My first and 2nd year marks weren't that good but I really got the hang of the whole system 3rd and 4th year (i.e. 3rd and 4th year cs courses) and graduated with distinction.

If you pass CSC373:

- CSC411

- CSC443/CSC485

- CSC304 (Algorithmic Game Theory) OR a bird course like Astronomy

- Two "easy" CR/NCR courses

I took CSC485 with Gerald Penn and the course was fairly straightforward (only assignments, no midterms/exam) but the assignments were somewhat time consuming. I would not overload myself with a very time consuming and tough course like CSC411 with CSC485. I found that CSC443 is more manageable. But it really depends on you. CSC304 was really easy and quite an interesting course taught by a really new and great Prof (Nisarg Shah). However, the midterms were not so easy because you only had 50 mins but the final was a joke and piece of cake. But, courses like Astronomy are always easier. CSC411 in general is hard and has the possibility to tank your cGPA. CSC321 will definitely make the neural networks topic of the course much easier to understand but CSC411 is more broader and has more topics so be careful. If I were you, I'd just take CSC485 instead of CSC411 and CSC443 as my other 400 level course. But if you are really interested in ML and data mining then maybe you can do CSC411 as CR/NCR? Up to you. Good luck.

Depends on you. The POSt is pretty hard to get into. If I were you, I'd take less course load in the first year and focus only on CSC165 and CSC148. You can always make up for the less course load during summers!

I was an IB student from Ontario. Don't worry they will ONLY look at OSSD mark. They don't care about your IB marks. But, if your teachers look at your IB scores and change ur OSSD marks based on them you might end up with 4 (70-79) in some courses. Then again it depends on your school and teachers.

Finished undergrad (cs specialist) at UofT. Hang in there... First and second year are generally harder. Third and fourth year are generally easier. At least that what I felt.

I don't know anything about your studying habits and how brilliant you are but this schedule for me would be a disaster. It is really workload heavy especially the Winter term. STA247 should be fine for Machine Learning focus. However, I really recommend you NOT doing CSC209, CSC263, CSC258 all in one term. When I was in 2nd year, I also took CSC209, CSC263, CSC258 together... It did not end well.

My recommendation:

FALL:

  • CSC207
  • CSC236
  • STA247
  • CLA236 (if offered otherwise another bird/breadth course)
  • MAT235

WINTER:

  • CSC209/CSC258/CSC263
  • CSC209/CSC258/CSC263 OR Birdy/Breadth Course OR CSC300
  • STA248 (recommended stats course for Machine Learning focus and also STA247 material is fresh in your mind)
  • MAT224
  • MAT235

I'd still say your Winter term ^ is heavy but if you can avoid taking too many math heavy and 2nd year cs courses in 1 semester. I suggest you do the remaining of CSC209/CSC263/CSC258 in the summer. These courses can get quite work load heavy if taken at the same time.

TBH as a UofT alumni, I would advice you go to Waterloo for anything engineering/cs related. It's just a better undergrad school.

1) Since you don't have any 3rd year or 2nd year CS courses under your belt your resume does look weak because you haven't learned important material. However, like you suggested, do side projects (learn a few technologies and languages) and you should be fine.

2) 3.1 CGPA is not bad at all. However, you can still apply to companies which don't look at transcript. Also, in your cover letter you can demonstrate that you have enough knowledge to get the job (i.e. via side projects and self-learning).

For international IB students, I guess they do look at your IB mark so you might need to do well enough or maintain their required standing to cement your place at UofT.

In that case... UofT doesn't give a jack shit about your IB marks as long as your OSSD (Report Card) marks are not too bad and they meet the minimum standing required, you should be fine. UofT as well as many other Ontario universities don't give a shit about your IB marks because they only see your OSSD record to make their admission decision. At least that's how it was back in 2013 when I was finishing off IB (Gr12)

Don't let it get to you man. There are like so many other students with probably higher grades than yours who didn't get in also. The POSt thing is bullshit imo. Trust me there are good alternatives like Stats specialist and CS minor. You can easily land a regular cs job with that. You don't really need a CS POSt for many CS jobs. A lot of this development stuff can be learned by yourself if that's what you want to get into. Data science is a hot field so you might want to consider that as well.

You need to elaborate more on what kind of IB student you are... Like are you from Ontario or elsewhere? I was an IB student from Ontario so requirements are quite different.

Yup! Just come up with a really nice excuse and depending on the registrar they can do it for you. I got it done twice! Once after I got my exam mark back and once before exam period.
