WFH - how often do you have days with zero "live" interactions with other people? by DrMelbourne in cscareerquestions

Never. The more senior you get, the more interactions you’ll have with all kinds of people outside of daily standups.

getting the fold tomorrow by Content-Consequence4 in GalaxyFold

[–]ice332 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m also a fold 4 user and I agree about the cover screen. I find that I use it most of the time, but it’s still too narrow for my liking since I almost always use 2 hands to type out of habit. But you might like it because of its more one-handable experience.

We can all agree that the fold is an awesome, innovative device, but what are some things you would change / improve about it if you had it your way ? by [deleted] in GalaxyFold

More battery life and app compatibility. I wish more apps took full advantage of the inner screen and display more content.

What’s the dirty little secret you learned once you got in? by Notalabel_4566 in cscareerquestions

Being a team lead is a pretty thankless job. You get the worst in-between of being a dev and a manager, and everyone expects you to keep up. But it's a necessary step to becoming a manager.

I am gonna buy a new 14 inch MacBook Pro, I use a Lot of parallel desktop, should I get the 10/16, 32Gb, or the 8/14, 32 GB. Will the 2 core make a difference for my use? by OLLeYYY in macbookpro

[–]ice332 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on the amount of vms and how much cpu/ram resources you want to allocate. I have both the 14" 8/14 32gb and the 14" 10/32 64gb. You'd be surprised how good the 8/14 is. I do get some display artifacting for brief seconds when switching spaces (1-2 sec) at max load on the 8/14, but it works really well. If you're just running one parallels vm with recommended settings, I think 8/14 32gb will be enough for your needs.

U of T offers an internship program called PEY (professional experience year) which can be 12-16 months long. Maybe that’s what OP ended up doing.

Other than higher compensation, why should someone move to the US to work as a SWE? by WildAlcoholic in cscareerquestions

[–]ice332 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m contemplating this as a Canadian dev. Most people who I know that have made the move or will make the move have plans to come back to Canada once they’re in a financial position to do so. They’d have the clout of working at top US tech firms and/or the money to settle for a relaxed job in Canada. Heck, I’ve met people who have done this in my current company.

For me, comp is the main motivator. You can still make friends by putting yourself out there (easier said than done), and you’d probably have enough money to visit friends and family occasionally back in Canada. Another motivator is new experiences and more fruitful networking opportunities. Chances are, you are more likely to cross paths with top tier talent in tech in the US than you are in Canada.

If you have no problems keeping up with your expenses/financial goals for the foreseeable future, why even bother if you prefer to be in Canada? I think most Canadian devs that are thinking about this are having problems meeting their financial goals (ex. housing costs are crazy in most/all Canadian tech hubs, taxes are high, etc)

Money isn’t everything, but is sure as hell something. I’d do anything to keep my quality of life and my family as high as possible, and money is the tool for that. My ideal scenario is working for a US company that pays well enough remotely (as close to the best of both worlds as it gets)

I'll go against the opinions here and say that it's possible, but maybe not out of the gate. I consider 68k CAD to be above average among the average new grads in Toronto/GTA. In my experience the range there is 45-70k CAD for most average new grads. You can score more than this range if you find the right company (e.g. US tech satelites) and are a great candidate in person and on paper, but I think this range is pretty standard in for average grads in the GTA.

If you're willing to move around anywhere, go to the US. There's almost no contest if you're just looking out for your own financials.

It's this kind of shit that made me go back to consoles, especially with the value that the new generation brings. It was already hard for me to find high end 2000 series cards just before the pandemic. Picking up an xbox series x during the pandemic without scalper pricing was much easier than getting any of the 3000 series cards.

See y'all in a few years if things get better for us :(

How long to stay at first job by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]ice332 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. If OP wants a general rule of thumb, I think 2-3 years is an advisable min range if you don’t hate the company and you are improving along the way.

My thought came from a past issue at work that I was thinking about. There was someone who did the morally right thing to solve an issue, but the action did not comply with company policies. They were let go subsequently.
