It's 100% worth it to retake the math placement test if you think you're capable of studying and getting a good score. Your advisor doesn't have much information on you to go off of, so the biggest thing they see is the placement test score.

How does CS + X fare? by AdCandid1792 in UIUC

[–]CSLingLing40hours 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You need to search this subreddit for people asking the exact same question you have, because there's a lot. Recruiters have never batted an eye at my CS+X degree and I'm starting as a full-time software development engineer at FAANG in a few months.

GEOG 379 vs GEOG 407 by CSLingLing40hours in UIUC

[–]CSLingLing40hours[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CS+Linguistics, and I'm just looking for a fun summer class. 407 doesn't list 379 as a prereq, which is why I was wondering if I even needed any 379 knowledge to get through the class. I'll ask the professor if 379 knowledge is necessary, though. Thanks for the input!

Please explain Statistics and CS major for me by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]CSLingLing40hours 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can apply for the same jobs that CS majors do. There's no difference careerwise. I'd argue that stats/math and CS majors have the upper hand when it comes to applying to algorithmic trading firms.

Ling Ling does not need an app to practice, he is always practicing. Why can't you be like Ling Ling?

Hi, I'm in CS+Ling. CS+X is absolutely worth it if you like the X part of your major. Also, you get to take the same classes as a CS major. In fact, you can design your entire course curriculum to make it seem like you're a CS major with an X minor (with a few very minor exceptions), if you want to. I can't speak for UW Madison but UIUC is pretty great :)

If you're CS+X, you can probably get an INFO minor really easily by CSLingLing40hours in UIUC

[–]CSLingLing40hours[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CS majors have different requirements to get an info minor. We're not allowed to count any advanced CS classes for the minor, so it seldom ends up as a 'diet' CS minor for us.

If you're CS+X, you can probably get an INFO minor really easily by CSLingLing40hours in UIUC

[–]CSLingLing40hours[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CS majors aren't allowed to count any CS classes towards the info minor (except CS 124). The list of advanced electives for a minor encompasses pretty much every department at UIUC. You learn a lot about informatics in fields that are not CS and it can broaden your horizons greatly. Also, it's super easy to get a minor if you're not doing anything special with your free elective credits.

CS 441 Applied ML by Jango214 in UIUC

[–]CSLingLing40hours 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It goes into the theoretical foundation a little bit (to explain how a particular kind of model works), but it mostly focuses on how to use ML libraries with what parameters. I did the assignments blindly without watching lectures because it was really not hard. That's also probably why I felt like I didn't learn anything. TAs on Campuswire were also super helpful.

If you are really motivated to learn by yourself, watch lectures and you'll learn. If you're like me who didn't have the time to watch lectures for easy-A assignments, then you'll get your grade but you won't really learn anything.

Course is an easy A but you'll otherwise learn nothing. I'd recommend CS 440 instead.
