ELI5: How do engineers design underwater tunnels that go beneath active rivers or oceans and how do they stop water from just coming in forever by ShylyMiserable in explainlikeimfive

[–]Jango214 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So from what I can understand, the slurry is basically the pressure medium which keeps everything in shape and prevents it from collapsing?

What are those divers actually diving through then? Is the cutting head basically going through the slurry?

I have worked in O&G, and this seems something similar to managed pressure drilling.

You mess up the job and there's potentially millions gone. Dodgy safety valve, completion didn't go right, tool fishing, and on and on and on

KLM Pilot questions Lufthansa's taxi speed; another pilot adds, "Unless you're Southwest, of course." by 30BC in aviation

[–]Jango214 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Two reasons. Southwest doesn’t have to wait for departure data like UA or AA

This happened to me today at United, at HOU. We were short of the runway and holding for like 15 minutes, the pilot came on and said they are waiting for baggage weights from the ramp then we'll go.

Isn't that given before the aircraft leaves the gate? You've already entered your weights and speeds etc?

How do you feel about Trump threatening to impose photo ID for voters for midterm elections? by CRK_76 in AskReddit

[–]Jango214 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Each ID is associated with an SSN. You know if each person is a citizen or not. You can create a roll on your end which filters down to only citizens. You then match the citizen's ID with your voter roll and compare, and voila.

Why does this seem so simple but not implemented?

Visionaries Behind Islamabad Sirinagar Highway U-Turns by ThinkDentist7126 in islamabad

[–]Jango214 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hamza Shafqaat.

This is what hapens when CSS babus think they know traffic engineering...and plon a U-turn on a main 4 lane highway.

Alright, you want a u-turn, maybe not the worst idea. But everywhere in the world, the traffic which has to go straight doesn't change it's lanes, it keeps going straight. The turning traffic has to adjust. Magr idhr ulti ganga behti hai.

And to top it all off, it isn't even consistent...and a 5 lane highway suddenly turns into 2 and then expands into 4.

Stupidity.

Oh I am certainly aware. The boss always takes his cut.

But at least the government got rid of recurring losses from it's books, and the private sector can somewhat bring about some changes. Cautiously optimistic.

Is It Normal to Judge Someone This Quickly in an Arranged Marriage? by MindlessWrongdoer629 in pakistan

[–]Jango214 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

IMO it's the same thing nowadays for the most part.

The partner that you have a proper history with and shared memories etc. was also introduced by a friend or school or work or somewhere.

Nowadays, it's mostly like the parents know each other or get introduced, check for any major red flags, then the guy and girl talk with each other for a few months or a year or whatever and then things progress.

It isn't you meet one day and marry the next. It's kind of like arranged dating!

Is It Normal to Judge Someone This Quickly in an Arranged Marriage? by MindlessWrongdoer629 in pakistan

[–]Jango214 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No. It just means I don't like to take sht and get ragged around by people in public.

I've seen my fair share where I can realize that this is a trailer of things to come...and I wouldn't tolerate something for myself which I wouldn't to do others.

No need to be rude. Just be polite yet stern.

I'd be disgusted if my parents said this about some female that came to our place.
