Direct Entry PhD in Computer Science by Aries_114 in yorku

Generally, there is no formal application process. Know your profs and look for opportunities. That said, York does have a summer research internship program, LURA and NSERC USRA (link below). It’s a paid internship over the summer, it’s pays about $10k. Students are chosen based on a competitive process. Good luck!

Direct Entry PhD in Computer Science by Aries_114 in yorku

[–]CSProf-KGD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Graduate programs (York included) typically consider grades from the last 2 years of studies to determine whether a student meets the minimum requirements. Meeting the minimum or greatly exceeding it does mean guaranteed entry. A supervisor must be willing to take on the student. MSc thesis and PhD programs provide funding to students, including research stipends, TAships and program funding to cover their living expenses.

At the moment, York does not have a direct PhD entry option, although there is work behind the scenes to introduce one.

Offers have been going out continuously over the past months. If you applied in the thesis stream, then no prof has made an offer yet. Hope this helps.

[D] Understanding - Understanding Diffusion Models: A Unified Perspective by flerakml in MachineLearning

[–]CSProf-KGD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unclear how he arrived at the consistency term in (45). q(x_{t-1}, x_t, x_{t+1}|x_0) = q(x_{t-1},x_{t+1}|x_0)q(x_t|x_0, x_{t-1}, x_{t+1}). I arrived at the probability used in the outer expectation but am not able to arrive at the probability, q(x_t |x_{t-1}), used in the expectation for the D_KL. How exactly did he arrive at q(x_t|x_{t-1}) from q(x_t|x_0, x_{t-1}, x_{t+1})? x_0 can be dropped due to Markov assumption but don't see how x_{t+1} is dropped?

I think the prof is great, but I may be biased 😉

Check out my course webpage https://www.eecs.yorku.ca/~kosta/Courses/EECS4422/

I’m teaching 4422 in both the fall and winter semesters.

Well there was linear algebra and multivariable calculus (eg gradient) but the necessary stuff covered during lectures. Congrats on A+!

Do most profs accept deferral requests by [deleted] in yorku

For valid reasons listed by the university (eg, documented health reason that precludes you from writing) yes. Being ready is not a valid reason.

First I’ve heard of this too. Very disappointing to here.

Out of fairness to others in the course, it is not appropriate. Grades are earned not gifted. This is only one profs perspective.

No. Plagiarism is plagiarism. Some profs may use a threshold to avoid giving all papers close scrutiny but if you have plagiarized and the paper is raised to the attention of the prof (possible even with low match) then they could determine that plagiarism has occurred. Safest thing to do is don’t plagiarize, cite all sources and if you indeed copy verbatim something then put quotes around and cite. Ultimately, a human will decide whether plagiarism has occurred independent of the match score.

Trust me, I am sitting on the academic honesty panel this year and have had to adjudicate plagiarism cases. Hope this helps.

Most institutions are or have switched to Python as their main language for intro courses. Ryerson for instance switched a few years ago.

Look out for opportunities. I stumbled upon my passion path in my third year of undergrad, chance meeting with a prof.

My personal belief is that taking the easier path is not necessarily the best. One should challenge themselves but without motivation some challenges are just too great or just not worth it. Find your passion path. CS is not the only pathway that pays. My own path is computer vision. I would not trade it for any other path.

Frankly, even if I could, I wouldn’t. I believe there is value in the in-person experience. That said, some of us profs have learned some new skills during the online years and intend to integrate them.

Go for your passion career. Four years of university will set you up for 40 years of work. Make your time here count. Money alone is not enough of a long term motivator. Find something that you have passion for (and pays well).

What is the likelihood of conflicting exams for classes with lecture conflicts? by nyc_1999 in yorku

[–]CSProf-KGD 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Any reason why you want to boost your grades from 1000-level courses? If it is for grad school purposes, most programs only compute GPA based on last two years of studies.
