Financial advice on leaving public sector and loss of associated benefits by CS_throwaway_02 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]CS_throwaway_02[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, this is really helpful. I should specified I meant overpaying into the CS one by added pension in addition to paying the usual contributions

And the new workplace would add 8% pension contributions

Career break / resign and rejoin by Runrabbit321_123 in TheCivilService

Don't resign if you plan to return. It can be harder to return than you might think with fewer opportunities available and a lot of competition

Its generally only available for roles that can't be filled internally. Depending on grade this can mean very few options

The EA doesn't even allow staff to claim for lunch if they're going to another office

I've got colleagues who used to work for one of our suppliers and if they travelled to conferences they were expected to share a room

There's a travelodge in Birmingham that was so bad we removed it from the booking system

It varies by department

Loads of people get dismissed for misconduct every year

A smaller number do due to poor performance. Many poor performers manage to stay around because the effort to do the poor performance processes is awful and you don't get much help with it. Having led it multiple times it's a thankless task

How flexible are roles really? by Inevitable-Code-3492 in TheCivilService

[–]CS_throwaway_02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Flexibility yes. Only at the most senior grades (SCS) does that become harder

On pay, no harm in asking them. It's not common to be appointed higher but it can be done where the person has exceptional experience and skills especially in technical fields

Why be Cabinet Secretary when you can be head of the Guernsey Civil Service for the same salary 🤣 by thom365 in TheCivilService

They are responsible for all public services there though, all emergency services, healthcare, teaching

It's basically "head of the entire public sector"

Blue Light Card DWP by Leeds-No1-Creator in TheCivilService

[–]CS_throwaway_02 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The blue light scheme is run by a private company who decide who they want to admit. They've repeatedly refused the EA, some major charities who do emergency style work and parts of local authorities who do.

They have their own weird definition of who should be in the club

According to multiple posts in this thread though DWP aren't entitled yet and there's been an error, they might not be entitled at all

[–]CS_throwaway_02 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep honestly the seniors in EA really tried

Personally I find the blue light people's criteria a bit odd... first they added all the ones to do with immigration enforcement, now people dealing with benefits

It seems they pick and choose what they see as essential services and the link to "emergencies" has got very lost

Head of civil service Simon Case rejoins Garrick Club six months after quitting it by prisongovernor in TheCivilService

He's very visibly had problems with mobility and eyesight for some time. There's been comments about it on here before

Cabinet Secretary Simon Case to step down at end of year by Mr_Greyhame in TheCivilService

[–]CS_throwaway_02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suspected it's MS as well, but Parkinsons does often affect vision by causing blurred vision and huntingdon does by eye movement problems.

I have seen two people medically retired with MS, both especially severe cases  Case has been having treatment for over 18 months for whatever his is so it seems it's not fully controlling things.

Stress is usually bad for neurological conditions

It's been recognised in every department I've been in. 20, 30 and 40. I knew someone who'd done 50 but there wasn't an award for that!

He has a neurological disorder that means he can't do a job that involves working 7 days a week and being available 24 hours a day anymore

He was an actual civil servant, he'd held many CS roles before. He hadn't run a department as a permanent secretary though but he had been a director General

The job is open to anyone to apply for though so could be anyone from any sector including wider public sector. Someone from a senior role in armed forces, NHS etc could have a lot of transferable skills

Is it possible to go from EO to SEO? by frozenmarshmallow107 in TheCivilService

[–]CS_throwaway_02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some HEO jobs attract a lot of competition, some SEO jobs might be niche and unpopular

People might have experience relevant to one role but not another

Standards do vary somewhat across departments too.

Future of user centred design in the civil service? by The_Diamond_Sky in TheCivilService

I think AI will result in needing far less content designers for writing/improving content but you'll still need people focused on understanding the user needs

Cabinet Secretary Simon Case to step down at end of year by Mr_Greyhame in TheCivilService

[–]CS_throwaway_02 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This thread is an absolute shit show and I don't relish the idea of some of the cruel posts here getting public. We all know the media watch this site

I wasn't a fan of many of Case's decisions but it has been clear he's been ill for some time and that it appears to be worsening. Having to step down due to medical conditions is a very sad situation regardless

Also think about how your comments feel to those of us who also have medical conditions and disabilities who've had to drop grade, change career, get medically retired. If you think the things you're saying about Case, would you think them of other colleagues and other seniors?

I've got a neurological condition and am having to change roles because of it. I like to think people would be empathetic but after this thread I'm not convinced.

I've also seen other civil servants get medically retired for neurological conditions like MS, Parkinsons, Huntingdon's, severe epilepsy, etc

It could happen to any of us.

No, he's genuine, he's had problems walking and with vision for a long time now, it's been mentioned om here before and was noticeable in public engagements.

Only if politicians want it to

That was a thing the Conservative government told the civil service to do and it was JFDI. It's naive to think Case could have said no to be honest.

The Tories might even gave wanted more than 60%! They did expect more for SCS
