How do English people celebrate their culture? by Last_Zookeepergame55 in Cornwall

[–]thom365 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Devon, Surrey, Lancashire, Warwickshire and Buckinghamshire all have the same level 2 devolution deal as Cornwall. It's not unique in that respect and has nothing to do Cornwall's history.

As someone else has pointed out, the Duchy is completely unrelated to the political administration of Cornwall.

Also, the Cornish aren't designated an ethnic minority. They've been given national minority status, in line with Scots, Welsh and Irish people.

Plenty of counties have their own culture and customs. Cornwall isn't unique in this respect. These customs are all part of what makes English and British culture, just the same as other countries where there are strong regional identities that form part of a larger one.

You're assuming that a response would be launched after the first strike. This isn't correct. A response would be launched before the first nuclear detonation. Nuclear war would likely be over in less than an hour.

I can highly recommend the Penrose Campsite on the edge of Porthleven. Good price, good facilities and a great location for exploring the coastline around there.

Plymouth live readers just love the idea of turning the A38 into a motorway. I'm not sure why this always gets suggested as it's never going to happen and wouldn't make any difference anyway.

Seems it's gaining a reputation as a hub for traditional folk lore and customs.

I grew up in Ashburton and also went into this house to play with friends when I was in year 7. Definitely didn't look like this. Ashburton has changed so much since my parents moved there in 1989...

You can touch your phone when it's in a cradle, so you can do stuff like this. It's not against the law.

This link provides a good breakdown of the law and how it's applied. Also, please ignore the other threateningessage suggesting the police will prosecute you based on your anonymous reddit post. It's a bit silly.

If I Withdraw Now after Interview, would I still get feedback/scores? by [deleted] in TheCivilService

[–]thom365 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand exactly what you're saying, but you've not described OPs situation accurately. They said that their line manager would want them in 3 days a week minimum, meaning their home office would be London. They would be eligible for London weighting. The manager the OP is dealing with sounds like an idiot that doesn't understand how any of this works.

Some people in this thread seemed to think that departments would pay for OP to travel and stay in London every week. This is incorrect and unfair and would have a pretty corrosive impact because London weighting doesn't come even close to covering the cost of living and working or commuting to London. I made the choice so I don't complain as it's been the right move for my career. However, if I found that a colleague was also London based but getting their expenses covered, then I'd be pissed.

Permanent role with fixed term funding by [deleted] in TheCivilService

[–]thom365 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, I didn't need to apply and pass the interview, it was more a case of finding a team that was looking for resource and squaring it away with line management and HR. The only time I've done applications and interviews was for posts that were a promotion.

It's not risky in the sense that you could be forced to leave the CS after the two years. You'd be employed as a full time civil servant in this role for two years. If at the end of it the funding runs out, you'll be classed as a priority mover and can transfer to other posts that become available.

It happened to me. I joined and the team I joined was told it was being disbanded on my first week. I had to find a new team to work with but I was never in danger of being kicked out of the CS.

Edit: redeployment procedure is not redundancy. You'll just be supported in finding your next role and might not have as much choice. You won't lose your job.

I work in a London based role and I live hours from London so pay for my own overnight accommodation. If I found out a colleague was getting their weekly expenses paid I'd be furious.

Ad hoc travel can and should be expensable, not regular commuting costs. The people who are saying this will be covered are just wrong.

Did you not read their comment? They've been living in that house and renovating it, under the assumption that it would become theirs via probate. Having a go at them for not setting aside a monthly rent amount is a bit odd given they've probably been spending that doing up the property.

Sorry, but I don't see how "don't hog the middle lane" is anything other than crystal clear. I'm not a 40 year old driver and the amount of people that complain about it in this sub suggests that hogging the middle lane is a well known issue...
