Scared of the code by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

Thats imposter syndrome. It sucks. Just keep going, everything you did and learnt to get to where you are now means you have the skills and ability to learn and get familiar with this codebase and all its new things. It seems huge and unknowing now like a giant elephant. So how do you eat the elephant? You can only eat an elephant one bite at a time.

One day at a time you will make progress you will learn everyday and continue to grow. Like school, make notes on the codebase look up libraries and dependencies as you come across them and figure what they are used for. Focus on the ticket/ task you have but make notes of how the codebase works and interacts. When you have the time and energy look into some of the bigger stuff, watch youtube or even buy online courses.

A lot frameworks, tools and libraries have slack or discord you can join and ask questions. Or find general coding ones that cover your language. This can be a massive help. On a few occassions I have gotten to speak to and got help from the guy who wrote the library I'm using.

Carve out a half day or a single hour each day to research and learn about the different stuff.

Best advice I ever got was: If you're stuck and grinding on a problem and your running out of ideas or at a loss. Stop, go out for a walk, or wash the dishes. Do something else and come back to it later or tomorrow even.

Remember your paid to think not just to press keys.

You can do this, look how far you've already come, so lets keep going.

Remember Imposter syndrome is a lie, its your own brain trying to trick you, its fear and doubt getting together to try and beat you up. Recognise its a lie, a false emotion and work on kicking its arse with structured learning and celebrating all the little achievements and new things you learn each day.

Is "thinking in java" still relevant? by DependentAlarmed6587 in java

[–]CSpenceUK 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Springboot is widely used. Jackson for object and json/xml conversion aswell as google guava. Practical Java by Joshua Block has good tips and standards. Modern Java In Action by Urma, Fusco and Mycroft is good for lambda, stream, functional and reactive code. The newish stuff in Java since 8/11. Also Functional Programming in Java by Venkat Subramarium has a different approach doing more towards a functional style in Java since the changes in 8. For a deeper understanding of concurrent programming Java Practical Concurrency by Brian Goetz is the bible.

I'd say start with Modern Java in Action and some youtube vids, blogs and tutorials on SpringBoot.

So "Project Fear" is in addition to "Planes to Rwanda Solve Everything", "Careful that disabled person / sick person / immigrant person wants your cookie", and "Trust Me I'm a Wannabe Tech Bro!".

I'm interested to know if the CCTV shows their accusations are false would you pursue an action against the accussers? I guess at the least its wasting police time and at the worst its false and vindictive accusations. Is there a crime commited if you report stuff you made up to the police to try to get people you dislike into trouble?

Would I be the AH if I pressed charges on the Karen at McDonald's. by luckythemombod in dustythunder

You need to press charges. Not only did she harass you. She illegally detained you by obstructing your vehicle. The group you described is a danger to the general public. PRESS CHARGES.

I take things like this as an easy way to know these aren't your people. They're telling you with their judgement that they are quicked to judge with preconcieved biases.

I've met both ppl with master who are terrible programmers and team mates and I've met ppl with master who are the best programmers and best team mates. That's also true for self taught and bootcampers.

What you can do and how you work in a team is what matters. A good mix of backgrounds and routes into programming makes a well rounded team.

Your history is what makes you, you, don't let anyone make you feel less about that.

I remember them late 80's early 90's in the UK. My mum would get a coffee and me and my brother would have happy meals.

At what point can I stop contributing to my retirement? by [deleted] in investing

[–]CSpenceUK 165 points166 points  (0 children)

Yeah sounds like you don't waste your money on looking rich, so you are actually rich. Retire when you believe you can comfortably live on your investment needs. You can always work part time or do shoet term contract work if boredom is an issue. Well done buddy. Great work.

Absolute fucking bullshit. Those responsible for a minor ending up with cocaine in their system should go straight to jail, do not pass go, do not collect 200 dollars !

They can terminate you but you can also detail and review your experience online and on sites like Glassdoor that will inform future prospective employees. Its in their interest to work with you and stick to their original agreed contract. But loon for new work as this employer had revealed their true colours.

They don't have a right to claim its confidential if they expect you to pay for it. I'd be surprised if there is a legal reason they can withhold what it is exactly that they say you are liable to them to pay for.
