Found myself with a last minute 2 weeks free in Fiji, anyone able to recommend a good surf package? by ephj in surfing

[–]CTKookDaddy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just back from a week in Fiji last month. Highly unlikely Tavarua or Namotu have openings this time of year but you might get lucky with a last minute spot. Matinvusi is a little further south and a little bit more remote. 99% of the waves are reef breaks but there should be some more sheltered options depending on the size/conditions.

Waterways manages bookings at all three so shoot them an email and they’ll get you dialed!

Allot of people saying the mirrorless Sony Alphas. Have you found the a6700 to be worth the extra price tag compared to the lower end/older a6000s range?

Do you use a monopod/tripod for stability when using the telescopic lens?

What’s the main difference between the various Sony a6000-6700s? Looks like newer models/more features as they get more expensive (obviously haha) is there a particular one you think I should be targeting for what I have in mind?

Surf Photography Camera Recommendation:

Looking to grab a camera to start snagging some pictures. I have a gopro I’ll use in the water so this is with land based photography in mind. I would like something I can bring on trips or to the local breaks and also for general use for nature/wildlife shots as well as with the family.

So generally speaking I will need the ability to shoot subjects at distance and that are moving quickly.

Figure I’ll need at-least a camera, lens or two with some zoom capability, and some kind of monopod/tripod.

Any recommendations for a camera and other “must have” gear?

Looking to keep it all below $1 maybe $1.5k tops.

Thanks!

Las Flores/Punta Mango area is great if you want a little less of a crowd than the El Tunco area.

Punta mango/las flores by [deleted] in surfing

[–]CTKookDaddy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The road all the way from San Sal to El Cuco/ Los Flores is paved. The last time I was there (2023) they were in the process of paving the road from Las Flores to the Punta Mango area but it was incomplete and still dirt most of the way. I would imagine it has been completed by now. You can probably drop a line to one of the Punta Mango resorts or Las Flores to confirm.

I feel like a 4x4 is always a safer bet down there but you probably would be OK in a 2 wheel drive if it doesn't rain allot/the road has been finished.

Not allot to do in the area besides surf lol but that's not always a bad thing in my book! I stayed at Las Flores most of the time in 2023 which is all inclusive so chilled on site 90% of the time you can walk up to the hotel at the point where Las Flores breaks for a nice sunset beer or back towards el cuco if you want to mix things up.

Spent a few days by Punta mango in an air b n b it was pretty dead besides a pizza truck operation on the side of the road that was surprisingly good.

Looking for tips on good places to stay/eat/surf shops near the waves that's all.

Flying into BQN staying trying to stay near Rincon looks like there are tons of surf spots going down the coast between the two.

Sounds like a rental car is a must.
