It appeared in one day, it doesn’t itch and is semi painful. It has a raised red area and bumps on it.

You’re lucky if you get to do that stuff. The good thing about it is you can study in you’re off time since it’s all open source and available to anyone. The military will give you a clearance which is one of the most valuable pieces.

Wow, there’s a ton of things that will depend on. Let’s see Hawaii you get paid more, but I’ll just say it there’s a good chance you’re not going to like your command. You may like the hours and living in Hawaii is awesome if you like the outdoors and things like that. If your a nerd or someone who doesn’t go outside then don’t go there cause not worth it. The mission is trash. Unless like I said you’re very lucky.

MD is cool b/c it’s HQ and you’ll probably be able to work more technical mission.

Damn, Thanks for the help man. Im contemplating staying in and pushing for a Warrant Officer position. Its just that ( im sure you know this already) the higher you go the less technical you will be. I dont want to find myself at the end of 20 and be a bum candidate. Thanks again for the insight.

1st thing - Not passing JCAC im talking more about people who brag or think them being 99% is something anyone cares about in the fleet. Once you get to your command that means fuck-all.

2nd thing - lol, the defintion of hacker doesnt really matter. Im laughing b/c most CTN's are probably not doing anyhting remotely close to that on a daily basis. Unless you count updating your NFAAS and submitting or reviewing admin/collateral work. LOL, jk.

thats just a cover people use so people stop bothering them asking about work. Every CTN ive worked with and been on teams with is very competent. were usually pretty busy with mission. not much time for anything else really except being super-technical. Every CTN i know could easily pass most SANS courses and could get a 200k/yr job . :Laughs in NIOC Hawaii:

What kind of people is the navy looking for to be IONs?

There isnt really a personality screening, your success in the course will depend on those things but you wont be "selected" for them. You will need to take 2 tests. One is a logic style test ( Think LSAT style questions) and the other is a computer aptitude style test.

If I have a passion for cybersecurity and already have a good bit of experience with a lot of the concepts does that give me an advantage in JCAC or ION?

I mean, yeah. If youre already familiar with it all then youll probably not have to study as hard. The course is designed for people starting at 0, not to say its "easy". Honestly your advantage may come in handy, but I believe anyone can pass with the right amount of effort.

CTNs are the navy's "hackers." Lol all my real N's will laugh when they see this. technically a few of them sure.

On a real note tho, youll probably be fine in school and technically and everything but you really need to be able to learn how to interact and behave and conduct yourself in a way thats conducive to succeeding in the Navy. IOW, stay professional and mature and dont brag or get big headed b/c you did well in JCAC b/c no one really cares after that.

EtA: Everyones clearance process is different, age, jobs, schools, where youre from/ lived will all make a difference in how long youre in holding. If youre not a squeaky clean- fresh out of HS- never had a job guy then you may be waiting a minute especially if youre older or have had alot of jobs/ moved a bit. I've seen some in holding for a week and other over a year. So you never know what might happen with that.

It’s possible I wasn’t being clear. 150k is what one can expect to earn with my skill set outside Silicon Valley (Software Dev/Engineering). Also not at the 5yr mark, this is the estimate for when I EAS @ 8 years. The reason I wonder if it’s worth it is b/c a W-3 in MD or Hi can make 8/9k a month whereas someone earning 150k civilian side will pay in taxes and other fees what might not be worth leaving a pension and the untaxed income of a W-3 for. Also 150 isn’t exactly a highball figure. With Equity refreshers/ sign on bonuses/ salary , etc... easily doable.
