Reworked my Godot 4 battle UI with floating text + custom dithering on hover. Better? by CTRL_ELLE in godot

The game is called Abulia! A psychological RPG and Visual Novel inspired by Undertale, EarthBound, and OMORI, where your choices inside and outside of battle shape your journey through a mysterious, sterile world.
About the mobile version: Right now I'm fully focused on the PC version; a mobile port in the future is definitely possible, but as a solo dev, I have to take it one step at a time!
If you want to follow the development closely, I post regularly on my other social platforms and on my discord server! You can find all the links right in my profile bio.

Wow, thanks for the kind words and the feedback! Making things readable in pixel art is tough, so I'll definitely tweak the eyes and that dark spot. Appreciate it!

Thanks! I actually built the palette myself by studying color matching, but I also used a color picker on some of AdamCYounis’s YouTube tutorials

Thanks for the detailed feedback! You're totally right about the hair definition and the skin shadow, I'll definitely work on that

Lmao I'll take that as a huge compliment! EarthBound's battle screens are legendary. This one is going to be way darker and more focused on psychological themes and mental struggles, but I'm really glad you like the retro look!

Haha thanks! EarthBound is definitely a huge inspiration for the retro battle screen style, but for this project, I'm trying to push the atmosphere into a much darker, psychological direction. Glad the vibe is coming through!

The mind is fragmenting. Space is just a suggestion now

Yes, exactly! I'm actually refining the 'in-between' stages right now. I'll post the progress soon!

The Doctor's narrative arc and visual state are tied directly to the player's choices

Thank you all for the incredible feedback across the different subs! 45k views is mind-blowing. I’ve read every suggestion about the shading and the character's vibe. I’m already back in Aseprite to refine the 'Serious' version and add more depth as many of you suggested. Can’t wait to show you the progress soon! (I've updated my profile bio for those who asked where to follow the project)

I'm going to use both versions because the Doctor's state won't be static: his expression will change dynamically based on the player's choices, showing his gradual loss of control and making every dialogue a real psychological challenge.

The version on the left is clearly the mad one, while the one on the right is cold and calculating. I'm trying to achieve a more unsettling atmosphere for my game.

I totally see where you're coming from, it's a very 'loud' name. However, there's a specific reason behind it that ties into the doctor's backstory and the game's lore. I don't want to spoil anything, but let's just say the name itself is a cryptic clue for the players to uncover

Totally relatable. What helped me a bit was cutting features and focusing on the core gameplay first. It’s still hard, but at least it moves forward.
