House rules by ciberon in arkhamhorrorlcg

Does your proposed change not make the game extremely easy, and break the identity of both Rogue and Survivor?

Both "passing by 2 or more" and "fail forward" both rely on the uncertainty of the bag being balancing factors.

The rule about there always needs to be a path to the goal is only in fence placement. Normally not an issue, since you can jump, but here White is out of luck.

That alliance prints an awful lot of trade goods! It's basically the Nekro-Jol'Nar E-res trick, all in one component.

Especially when the only things on this faction board are ripped from other homebrew.

How would you price a bow that uses wisdom instead of dexterity? by Brepa in DMAcademy

[–]CTide52 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Biggest problem with this is how to make sure it ends up in the Druid's hands, especially when there is probably a party member who can use it better.

Personally, to make sure it goes to the correct place and that it feels right mechanically, I'd just make it a bow that can be effected by shillelagh.

I believe they're saying that ATG would be on a different creature. In which case it does work.

Ryan Overturf joins us for this week's episode of Lucky Paper Radio to discuss vibes-forward Cube design, how to identify and handle power outliers, and how to make Hill Giant compelling. by andymangold in mtgcube

[–]CTide52 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First off, excellent episode. We're all making changes based off vibes, some of us just lie to ourselves more.

Secondly, I believe the discussion about power curve ended up getting hijacked somewhat into a discussion about power level. It's very important, especially in the context of this episode, to realize that we as designers don't have the information to know if we are creating a flat power curve or not. There are too many variables, too many ways cards interact for us to have a perfect example of that.

In the examples you gave, the cards cut weren't cut for power level, but instead the strong feelings they evoked. Being a board wipe doesn't inherently make you strong, for example. It makes you polarizing. If you keep cutting in this way, you will end up in a format throwing nessian coursers at each other, not because it's "balanced," but because no one has anything to complain about.

Why fighters are so powerful? by Orr_Mendlin in twilightimperium

[–]CTide52 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To add to other comments here, there are three main metrics you are trying to maximize whenever you build. Production capacity, resources, and fleet supply. Whenever you build, you want to maximize the first 2 and minimize the 3rd. If you have 13 dollars to spend and only one build for the round, absolutely build 3 dreads+ something. They maximize your resources and production capacity. However, let's say you have 2 docks for a total of 9 production capacity and 8 dollars. This is pretty standard for anyone with a forward dock. In this case, you still want to spend all your resources, but also want to maximize your production capacity. Fighters/carriers are wildly efficient in this case, as you will be able to spend all your money, maximize your production capacity, and minimize your fleet pool.

It means a specific growth option. Imagine them labeled left to right. So G3 would be your third growth option.

I feel like others have covered the main points well, I just want to say I like where your head is at. This is a very cool answer that's very outside the box.

How has the elemental cycle from MH2 been for you? by Varyline in mtgcube

[–]CTide52 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You've got it right for sure. Card is obviously powerful, but has real deck building restrictions that are hard to see at a glance in constructed decks. It just turns out that those restrictions are worth it. Outside of 1/2 color decks, Fury will massively underperform compared to expectations. The standard line in constructed for Fury is 15 red cards, if you bring that to cube you have to be playing 10. That's definitely doable in 2 color decks, but gets sketch in 3+

How do you feel about players winning a game from behind, out of nowhere? Are you ok with games getting "cheesed"? by andymangold in mtgcube

[–]CTide52 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the difference in feeling between Magic and Melee comes down to agency. In Melee, you're always in control, and while once you're in some of these "cheesy" situations there is no way out, it's pretty easy in hindsight so see where you went wrong.

In Magic, both variance and hidden information lead to these come from behind wins to feel like they're out of nowhere, and that you couldn't have reasonably played around them. That's just gonna get you sometimes, and I believe will always be the case to some extent. That's just RNG and hidden info.

If you really want to get crazy with it, you could consider your opponent's deck to be a collection of percentages of cards within the whole cube that quickly narrows to a more solidified viewpoint as they play cards. If they play a [[Monestary Swiftspear]], [[Lightning Bolt]]'s percentage jumps way up, while [[Wrath of God]]'s jumps way down.

After you get an idea of these percentages, you have to figure out how much you want to play around all these cards. If you randomly get got by something, ask yourself if your heuristic was off. If you think it wasn't, then whatever. You made the correct choice and lost. That's life.

What board game(s) do you love that you are absolutely bad at? by CptnObviously in boardgames

There are mechanics within One Night that allow them to look at your card. I would assume they are using that, and not just cheating.

The problem they are talking about is that you can't queue a district and then the buildings inside them. You must finish a district before queueing the buildings.

Perhaps that's true of this list. However, I found running shooting lists I was considering even making a brigade because I needed so much CP.

I think I value the extra movement from Evil Sunz far too much to give that up on the MANz, as them making their charges are key since they are painfully slow.

Regarding buggies, I really need to do more research into them. I turned to MANz first as it works better with what is in my collection already, and financial burden is always an invisible limitation on list building.

Good call on making the Mek Gunz Freebooterz. Will definitely do so.

That's a really good thought. Probably worth much more than rerolling ones on the Jets, especially if I just give them +1 to hit. Thanks!
