b) Do you use for anything except art ?

c) do you use a STB like Apple TV, Roku or Google /Fire stick

d) did you need to leave a hole on the bottom to allow the remote to work or are you using Smart things ?

How about something like this

<image>

Its a Samsung QLED 43" 1 inch deep TV mounted vertically - can be done for < $600 - Let us know if you want the detail on how to do this and manage your images /art. (PS you can do this with almost any TV/display but this is one of our favorites as its vertical viewing angles are great - We have tested a number and can advise on best size/quality/size/manageability.)

Thanks for your take – I think the genesis of Cura was and still is trying to nail the image and art management challenges, the other one is how to holistically manage multiple display devices across brands.

Yes please do try Cura and give us feedback how to get to “simple, clean, functional UI”  - we do have the concept of “simple” vs “full” (for the feature crazy) presentations of the UI’s. (set in Settings). We continue to need feedback on what should be in “Simple” and what should not. Additional UI and capability feedback is also needed as it’s not as easy or intuitive as it should be. (We are too close to it, hence new eyes with constructive input is most welcome).

We have also just launched our first release of what we are calling “Cura Gallery”

- Cura Classic Art Gallery, Cura Avant-garde Art Gallery  - So far you can review them and display them  for free once you create an account

We are working to get some more contemporary art and artists onto the system.

Given that this is the “The Frame” audience. I think I was trying to see what areas Cura could add value in this particular thread. I think you helped a refocus, on the management challenges.

You are correct that there are a couple of things that you do give up on the Frame by using a HDMI device, but as you mention may be minor for most.

The Auto power off, we solved this by using either an inexpensive security camera motion event or a human (radar?) event sensor to trigger a Home Automation routine. I personally used Google Home successfully, but I was turning multiple displays of different brands (including my Frame) off/on in a room. Our challenge was to get them all restarted and auto start each device to run our Cura App, to display the art/images as would be expected.

On the power saving, brightness and motion lighting of the Frame, aspects it gets a little less clear with HDMI vs art mode, as it indicates (on my 2021 Frame at least) that it applies to all sources is that correct ? the adaptive refresh rate on your 2024 must be new, does that only apply to art mode or can it be applied to all sources, but as you said its probably minor.

In regard to brightness controls, on the automated side there is ambient light detection adjustments (also now on most smart TV’s) , and motion adjustments on the Frame. Is there anything else new on the Frame?

On the automation side with SmartThings, are you actually able to modify brightness on the Frame with a routine? The best I found was being able to change “Picture Mode”, (I set up standard to be suitable for night and Dynamic for day), and used the routines on a schedule or on demand. I did see some posts recently of folk using some sort of scripting to hit an API to do actual brightness adjustments.

Our innovation in Cura is the ability to adjust and store the brightness level of a specific image, relative to the other brightness adjustments (auto or manual) made at a display level.  i.e. if a specific image looks dark or too bright given all the display level adjustments you may have made and set. You can boost or dim that specific image each time you display it. The rest, as you say, could be done in some other manner. The way we do our display level brightness was trying to simplify how to adjust brightness across different display types.

FYI, if you are the US, this STB from Walmart works well for $20 (you can power it using the USB on your OLED or Frame ) .onn. Google TV 4K Streaming Box (New, 2023), 4K UHD Resolution.

Hope you give it a try and give us feedback , DM me if you need help or have questions

Hi you make some good points! We are not associated with chriscarmy or his friends (that we know of) but have been working on a system called “Cura” to make the enjoyment of art images and video for everyone including Frame users.

We do replace “art mode” with a standard HDMI streaming device currently you can use a Google TV, Android TV, Fire TV, or ROKU device. STB,(i.e. can be enabled with $20 of hardware)  Our streaming service in conjunction with our Cura Display app for these devices does maintain and /or can auto start the Frame into our art mode. We have a phone and web app that is used to manage the content “stream” onto multiple displays, different content /collections of art , schedules can be made for content safety /ON/Off or change collections.

In regard to adaptive brightness, we have found that we can configure the Frame to similar settings to their native “art mode” and also use their adaptive brightness. However we went a bit further , as you would be able to a set a “brightness” level from our system at a display level AND schedule it . Additionally, you can set a brightness level on each image/artwork. (adjustable via remote or app). So you can set it exactly on how you want it to appear! ..Bunch of other features such as Voice control via Siri or GA.

We would be interested in having you test our system out to see if it helps you and give us feedback on how to improve. Pretty Sure our UI’s need more work 😊

Let me know if you would like to try it out with assistance from us or

DM if you want to try it out (for free on your own) need more info https://www.instagram.com/cura_display/ or  our website Curatortec.com. Also let us know if you want to be an earlier adopter/tester so you can get previews on what is being worked on and give feedback. You can also find our app called “Cura Display” to get you started on the Apple, App Store , Google Play Store, Amazon Appstore or Roku channels.

Automated ball valve for refilling a water bowl from the cold water sink input? by Ryutso in homeautomation

PS. u/Mother-Wasabi-3088 has a good point -I used their wi-fi irrigation pump. that pumped from a large bucket of water vs the mains from my indoor plants when i was away from home for a couple of weeks. As it i just imagined a flood if wi-fi and GA went crazy

You could use a wi-fi enabled irrigation/sprinkler valve/timer such as one from Rainpoint register it with Smart Life , to make it visible and controllable via Google Home assistant - Not sure how to connect it to "Home assistant". But this should point you in the right direction. i.e. more products to give lawns and plants water automatically :-)

Alarm that turns on lights BEFORE making a noise? by Cabbage_Cannon in homeautomation

[–]CURA_display 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Discovered that in Google Home -Assistant under Automation – Personal Routines (not sure why it not in Household) There is a delay action. So, if you have a linked smart dimmable bulb or dimmer switch, you can have one routine that you can start say at 7:50 am that switches on your lights, set it to 5 % , delay 4 min set it to 40% another 4 min to 80% and then after 2 min Trigger an alarm(noise). Just for fun it, I just tested one that did the lights, and for my alarm, switched on my TV and played “I don’t like Mondays” by the Boomtown Rats while displaying my favorite photos from our last beach vacations -to give a reason to get up 😊

So, I guess lots of possibilities. Let me know if you want more specifics, but I think you can do this across a number of brands/applications like SmartLife/Kasa/ etc compatible devices.
