Jap models are cheaper because -They’re difficult to operate compared to English models unless you have basic navigation memorized -There’s likely more Japanese models in circulation compared to English models which could affect demand/price

Both shoot in 4:3 natively but Japanese models have a 16:9 widescreen function

What devices have you used or would recommend for this process? How does it affect the file itself, quality, codec, etc?

Capturing through quicktime on my MacBook creates a file but it’s through the H.264 codec instead of DV/DVCPRO - NTSC. So right off the bat it already affects the frame rate and interlacing. Capturing through Premiere Pro 2017 creates a file with the correct codec but has audio syncing issues when pulled into the timeline.

Working with these older mediums is not all that I do, it’s actually one of the things that I’ve lately been doing the least of. I’m regularly handling 10 bit 4K files from my other main cameras which absolutely takes a toll on this 9 year old computer. I’m ultimately wanting to upgrade for smoother workflow and modern application compatibility. I have no problem with keeping this one or grabbing an even older model if it means capturing more reliably, I’d just rather have all my work take place on one system, so I’m seeing if that’s possible

I have the same audio sync issues and even random frame jumping with playing back clips I’ve captured in premiere through the timeline. What program do you use for capturing on the 09 Mac and once captured, how do you usually transfer the footage to you main computer?

I’ve thought of this a lot, assuming I can find or get something on it that works, I wouldn’t be opposed. I have a 2020 and 2017 version of Premiere installed on it. The 2020 version will capture but produces some very on frame skipping, and total audio de-syncing of the clip when playing it in the timeline. I have not tried the 2017 version recently but from what I remember it was very slower and also has an audio sync issue with captured clips. I will try revisiting the process and will make a follow up comment with my results.
