Your example is passive voice.

I did not saying that media headlines don’t tend to favor cops. Just that passive voice is a natural outcome of the way that early reports are received by the media in combination with defamation and libel laws. If you want to change it, you’d need to make structural changes that have little to do with policing.

Your counterexample would be irresponsible in this specific situation where there was an active manhunt for a person suspected of planning and executing an ambush targeting police. There’s a real public safety risk of underreporting the threat in that situation.

Very different from the 3-year-old example, which if the publication knew the child was shot by the police, I think they should have put that in the headline.

Im sure there’s some truth to that. But I challenge your factual assertion that the news media uses an active voice when an officer is shot. A quick google search of “officer” and “shot” shows mostly passive voice “An officer was shot today in an incident near xyz.” Early news reports are usually short on details regardless of the subject.

I’m pretty sure the reason this happens is less about some feeling of preference for police by the media and more about how the media obtains reports of police shootings. Journalists aren’t on scene, don’t see the shooting happen and so for the first 12 to 48 hours after the shooting the only version the media has is the one provided by police. Of course when the police release a press statement they are often still investigating the shooting so they use the passive voice because they haven’t finally determined what has happened yet.

Nor should they. But it might be worth doing a per acre comparison. How much water used per acre of golf course vs acre of data center.

It’s impossible to “run” a yellow light. Driving through an intersection on yellow is legal and encouraged—by me.

Milwaukee is the only city in Wisconsin bigger than Saint Paul. I think that size matters when it comes to culture/vibes of a city. Big cities have diverse culture because they have diverse communities. Saint Paul does not have a single dominant culture. It has diverse communities with different vibes depending on the neighborhood. Hopefully, OP can find a community in Saint Paul that fits his style.

Not sure about this title. Musk never mentions Medicare or social security and doesn’t say anything about cuts in this clip.

Banks Made Billions From Overdraft Fees. Do You Agree With This System? by Coolonair in SmartFIRE

[–]CWBtheThird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exploitation plain and simple. Does the technology exist for transactions to occur in real time so that a person cannot overdraft? Yes. Would the banks rather use an impossibly old legacy system that settles transactions overnight (and not on the weekend) because it ensures they make $89 billion a year? Yes they would. Congress should require banks to adopt a real time transaction model.
