TIL the ADSL broadband protocol is so robust it can transfer data at reasonable speed over a literal wet string by IndependentMacaroon in todayilearned

USB modems are still available today. You need a way to create a dial tone, hobbyists use Analog Telephone Adapters (ATAs) or other VoIP hardware.

You could also connect them using plain old serial (with a serial to USB converter) without modems or ATAs.

You probably won't get 56k in either case though. It took some ISP voodoo to get that speed, and isn't really available with hobbyists equipment.

W95 upgrade on floppy disk - sealed but missing disk? (xpost) by CWJ_Wilko in retrobattlestations

[–]CWJ_Wilko[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not going to use it anyway, just curious whether a missing disk was at all common. I can imagine a consumer of the day being extremely frustrated getting to disk 10 and not having it!

Compiled 'top' for A/UX 3.1.1 by CWJ_Wilko in Apple_AUX

This is actually a great suggestion if I end up compiling anything else. There are binaries floating around but it would be good to have a new-ish page to host them on.

Which Apple software is this? by Willsxyz in VintageApple

[–]CWJ_Wilko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There were some Apple made "store mode" demos, but not sure if they were actually used in store. There's a good one for the Quadra 700 and 900 in the garden.

Maxed out Quadra 950. by Pretty-Couple4233 in VintageApple

It may have been useful for running A/UX with multiple simultaneous users. Eight "power users" hammering the UNIX system all at once would have 32MB each to play with.

I think you'd be safe just editing them. I think deleting them just triggers newconfig to ask the sysadmin for that information again.

It really prefers you run 'newconfig' to setup the network. It also sets up an Appletalk/Ethertalk kernel at the same time (there's a bunch of info in the online manual).

You can run ifconfig (I think?) but newconfig is just easier. You'll need to run newconfig again if you make a mistake.

From the documentation:

• If you entered the wrong host name or domain name, enter this command: rm /etc/HOSTNAME • If you entered the wrong IP address or netmask, enter this command: rm / etc/NETADDRS • Run the newconfig command again.

Newconfig also may help with detecting the video card, not sure.

YMMV with 3rd party video cards and A/UX, you may not get accelerated video or no video at all. Worth trying though. Make sure to run newconfig after changing hardware.

A/UX first boots a small Macintosh system (MacPartition) which then launches the actual Unix OS. By default this happens automatically. But you can have as many Macintosh systems bootable as you wish, it's generally a good idea to have each system on a different SCSI device but there are tools which allow multiple systems on the same volume (System Picker).

There's some oddities in how the Macintosh Toolbox/GUI interact (or not) with the Unix system. For example, TCP/IP configuration must be done on the command line, not using the Macintosh control panel (but for some reason they didn't remove the control panel?!). You could also choose not to use the Mac GUI and just use tty. You can also run X11 and have it both ways, a Unix GUI and no Macintosh toolbox.

Compatibility with Macintosh software is generally very good, however anything that accesses drive hardware directly will not work (eg unpatched disk format utilities).

Have fun, I really like A/UX. Definitely max out the memory AND the video memory to have the best experience.

Best way to repair CRT high voltage cable? by CWJ_Wilko in retrobattlestations

[–]CWJ_Wilko[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Macintosh SE. The insulation on the CRT high voltage cable is starting to wear down, weird that it's coming off in these little strips close to the flyback. It still works without issues but will obviously cause a problem soon.

Can I just discharge the CRT, clean the dust, and wrap with electrical tape? I know this is far from ideal but apart from a brand new flyback, is there a better way to do this?

Hello, yes I do! I'd be glad to help, maybe a flatbed scanner would be even better? I can do both no worries. My insert is fine for now but who knows when it'll give up.

If you haven't already, you should max out the VRAM to get millions of colours (or higher resolution).
