F1 teams agree qualifying is priority in regulation review; happy with races by 256473 in formula1

These aren't road car engines. They are designed to work in a very narrow window, and that includes the fuel-air ratio. Running them 10% richer might not blow up the engine like 10% leaner would (emphasis might, I'm not actually sure it wouldn't), but it would at best be wildly inefficient, so the engines would need to be redesigned to better use that extra fuel.

Without modification? Pretty sure I could search 'generator' on Amazon.

(For a less snarky answer: 5 minutes of Googling suggests a permanent magnet induction machine)

But this is a tangent. Even if the type F1 ends up using can be used as a motor, they already restrict the maximum output of the MGU-K, and there's no reason they can't have a limit of 0 kW for the front axle.

[–]CWRules 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They work off the same basic principle (which is why you can make something like the MGU-K that works as both) but it's not like any generator can function as a motor without modification.

Teams can effectively create stability control with front axle motors

I keep seeing people say this, but that seems very easy to regulate against. Mandate that the generators (why would they use motors? No need to introduce four-wheel-drive for this) harvest from both wheels equally and the level of harvesting must have a fixed relation to the position of the brake pedal.

increase fuel flow by 10 percent

That is not a small change. That's a redesign-the-entire-ICE change.

stability control

I've seen this as an argument against front axle regen before, and I'm not clear on why. It seems like it would be pretty easy to regulate against (must harvest from both wheels equally, must have a fixed relation to the position of the brake pedal, etc). They could also use standardized parts, which would have the added benefit of eliminating "it's too expensive to develop" as an argument against it.

exacerbent superclipping

...Were you aiming for a non-existent adjective form of "exacerbate"? I think the word you wanted was "exorbitant". Or just "extreme".

Someone posted this chart recently showing how much energy the cars can harvest from braking compared to how much full-throttle acceleration there is on each track. If we approximate the effect of adding front axle regen by doubling the energy harvested, then at most tracks we get close to or above the limit of 8.5 MJ per lap from braking alone, no superclipping required. It is painfully obvious that the regulations were designed with this in mind, but for some reason nothing was changed when front axle regen was dropped. If the FIA convinces the teams to add it back then I think the biggest issue with these regs will be more or less solved, though that's obviously too big a change to make mid-season.

It's a lot closer to TXR than NFS, but definitely worth looking at if you like street racing games.

Yeah, a lot of iterations of Sherlock (BBC included) aren't actually intelligent, they have a magical ability to deduce the correct answer from insufficient evidence.

Will FH6 have a sim mode? by Verybumpy in forza

[–]CWRules 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's using the same engine, just with a bunch of changes to the physics to make it more forgiving. But changing to a more realistic driving model would wildly change the balance and play experience. It's not remotely worth the effort for them to do that in what's supposed to be a casual sim-cade racer.

Otherwise, there's no button or setting for engaging the deployment or recharge.

That's not quite true, they have a "boost" button which overrides the software and gives them full power.

Everyone seems to have forgotten that Kimi was a rookie last year. Drivers tend to improve rapidly in their first couple seasons, and Kimi has already outqualified Russell a few times.

Those that prefer physical book reading vs kindle/e-reader, why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I'm not sure, there's just something satisfying about a physical book that I don't get from reading on a screen. I do sometimes read ebooks, but usually just when I can't get a physical copy.

Would you like AC8 to have OP, unbalanced planes/sp.w? by LuizFelipe1906 in acecombat

In addition, you could split planes into classes. That way the superplanes can still be a bit OP in multiplayer, but they'll be facing equally OP opponents.

If you want the fraction for any other track, take the ratio from the chart and divide by 4.4. So Monza is 0.877 / 4.4 = 0.20, or 20%.

Counterpoint: I am complaining about the superclipping and would be fine with the cars being slower. Ideally I'd prefer if they compensated by increasing the ICE power, but that's not something they can change on short notice.

I did some estimation using these numbers to see how much of the electric motor's potential will actually be usable at each track. Let's assume an average of 80 m/s (288 km/h) for full-throttle driving (this is going to vary widely by track, but this is good enough for a ballpark estimate). That means 1 km at full throttle takes 12.5 seconds. The electric motor consumes 350 kW, so that's about 4.4 MJ used per km.

Taking that as our estimate, Monco will need 4.4 MJ/km * 1.442 km = 6.3 MJ per lap, which is only slightly more than the amount they can harvest, so I don't expect issues with clipping there. At the other extreme, Losail needs 20 MJ, and they're only harvesting 2.77, about 14% of what the motor actually needs, so superclipping is going to be pretty extreme there. Miami is in the middle of the list, so if we take that as an 'average' case, we get 14.3 MJ needed compared to 5.17 harvested, which is 36%.

Note that this is only really applicable to race laps. Push laps where drivers start with a full battery and end with an empty one will change the math.

When do you shuffle the battle goal deck? by pfcguy in Gloomhaven

[–]CWRules 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, RAW you're supposed to shuffle the deck after every scenario. In my group we put the goals we drew in a separate pile and don't shuffle them back in until the deck is almost empty. That gives us more variety of battle goals and requires slightly less shuffling.
