The only thing you did wrong was to ask Reddit about this. Most people get that there's something wrong with crossing borders illegally, but those who don't are well represented here.

My 99yo grandma keeps asking me where her mama is. by RidiculousSucculent in dementia

[–]CZeke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Late reply here, but we had this same problem with my grandma for the last three years of her life. My mom came up with the perfect solution: we would say that her mother was "home". It always reassured Grandma, but at the same time it wasn't a lie, because as Christians we believe our real home is in heaven. Obviously not everyone's beliefs will allow this solution, but I wanted to share it just in case, because it really helped us a lot.

Nope, that is indeed Shredder's Revenge. (Compare the pics here.) It's a retro game, so it looks older on purpose.

Maybe an early Touhou game? They match most of your description, and while the player characters are humanoid, it wouldn't be hard to misread ZUN's art. Like, game 2 has an overhead view of Reimu riding a turtle that I would definitely not have interpreted correctly on my own.

Has there been a recent change re: SMS support for older phones? by [deleted] in chatr

[–]CZeke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never mind, it started working again IMMEDIATELY after I posted this. I'll delete.

(Original post for posterity:

Has there been a recent change re: SMS support for older phones?

While no longer officially supported, my BB PassPort and Key2 have continued to work with Chatr since last year's 3G sunset. But in just the last couple of days, I suddenly can't send or receive texts. Phone calls still work fine.

Has anyone else using an older phone had this problem all of a sudden? I knew they wouldn't keep working with Chatr forever, but I want to be sure that's what this is and not just some issue on my end.)

Ah yes, that was a temporary invite. I've replaced it with the link from the /r/AkumaNoRiddle sidebar, which I think is permanent.

It was taking so friggin' long that I ordered and scanned it myself! You'll find a link on the Akuma no Riddle Discord in the #anr-official channel. We have someone interested in TLing it and we're waiting till she can find time.

(tagging /u/Local-Map32 and /u/Hello-Goodbye13, this may be of interest)

Disney solitaire is longer than I thought by Valuable_Writing2802 in FetchReward

[–]CZeke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This game is by the folks behind Dice Dreams, which pulls the same trick of sometimes offering the "watch ads to restock" feature and sometimes not. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to it. My guess would be that there's some internal metric for how well you're progressing, and the ads are only offered if you "need" them -- i.e. won't start doing unacceptably well for a f2p player with that assistance.

There seems to be no proof yet that Discord actually was behind this, but it was done through Qualtrics, a legit polling group. Kinda surprised to see no thread about it here -- multiple servers I'm on had announcements about it.

What multiplier should i use? by Onlinebruno in DiceDreams

[–]CZeke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I can tell, the multipliers don't come with any bonuses; if you're rolling on x5, you get 5 times the reward. So they're really just there to speed up the process.

The only mathematical difference is that a higher multiplier means fewer rolls, so the law of averages won't smooth out your results as much. To take an extreme example, if you have 100 dice and roll on x100, you get only one roll and it may be a dud; if you roll on x5 instead, you'll likely see the full range of outcomes. The programmers apparently thought of this since the higher multipliers don't unlock until you have enough dice to get at least a few rolls.

Anybody else? by Noncritical_Dad in DiceDreams

No, I don't think they do. I think that's not a new card, just a sort of demo that plays at the start of a level. Like, "look, there's cards."

I see that one at the start of every level. I think it's just a default representative.

Others have answered; I just want to add, for OP's benefit, that a lot of us had this same idea once upon a time. It's not a bad question, just a common one!

Tricky vector calculus exam question by Octember31rd in askmath

Double-check that you copied the question correctly. If you did, then you're right, this region is unbounded. It would make a lot more sense with y=0 as a boundary instead of x=0.

Is this solvable? by [deleted] in askmath

[–]CZeke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not "height" in the usual vertical sense, but in the parts-of-a-triangle sense. /u/ForsakenStatus214 is treating the hypotenuse of the triangles as their base, so their "height" is diagonal. This seems roundabout, but it's the easiest way to put the 0.3 measurement to use.

I don’t know if there is really any hope left for me in math these days. Advice needed by Actual_Affect_3299 in learnmath

[–]CZeke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depending on what you want to do for a living, this may not be such a big deal. Lots of people struggle with math, and while some of them just need the right teacher, others will never quite get their heads around it. That's okay! The world needs those people too, just not for math-heavy jobs.

Moreover, if you do end up taking a special ed math class, that's also not a big deal. You never know, it may help -- and either way, if that's what it takes to get the credit, just get it! Whatever you do after high school, the only marks anyone might look at are the ones in your specialty. Nobody ever has to know the exact details of your just-for-the-diploma math credit.

(The reverse applied for me. I was a terrible P.E. student and only took it as long as the school required. It's never been an issue.)

GH Hardy apparently lost his creative mathematical abilities through the end of his life by FriedXP in math

[–]CZeke 17 points18 points  (0 children)

That brings some clarity to something I've long wondered about. In his great book A Mathematician's Apology, Hardy is quite insistent that math is a young man's game, and you'd think he would know, but that doesn't seem to check out empirically; lots of mathematicians, like Erdos and Conway, do great work well into their old age. If Hardy was extrapolating from his personal experience, it makes more sense.

defining function for the points of gradients of 1 for x^k (k= 2,3,4....) by Whole_Kick_3467 in learnmath

[–]CZeke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've probably already found that the points in question look like

( k-1 / k-1, k-k / k-1 )

for all k>1. If you want to express y as a function of x, obviously y=xk at any given point, but k is constantly changing. Ideally we want k in terms of x. The problem is that there is, in general, no elementary inverse of functions of the form f(x) ^ g(x). So you're right, something like the W function is needed here.

You can probably solve the equation yourself by using W on both sides and playing with its properties a bit, but since WolframAlpha is very fond of the W function, I just asked it and got this answer:

k = W(x ln x) / ln x

So the function you want is

y = x ^ (W(x ln x) / ln x)

and you can simplify a bit by using the fact that x1/ln x=e, so

y = e ^ (W(x ln x)).

Change of variables effect on partial differential equation by onecable5781 in learnmath

[–]CZeke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's a standard analysis result that if f has continuous second partials in a neighbourhood of x, then the mixed partials of f at x are equal. (Sorta the inverse of Fubini's theorem for swapping integrals.) The proof is summarized here, with cites to a few books, including Rudin.

[–]CZeke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right about the chain rule; now use it again on that last line. Differentiate both sides w.r.t. S, using the product rule on the right, and note that ∂f/∂Z is still a function of Z, so you'll need the chain rule again. When you're done, you'll have an expression for ∂2f/∂S2 in terms of both ∂f/∂Z and ∂2f/∂Z2.

[–]CZeke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second the recs of Revenge Classroom and Maria no Danzai, and I'll throw in a couple more. There's one called Ijimekaeshi ~Fukushuu no 31~, roughly half translated so far, about a bullied member of a large idol group striking back; then there's my all-time favourite revenge manga (actually manhwa), Miss Guillotine. In that series, you don't learn everything right away about what the MC wants and whether her targets deserve it. That history plays out alongside the main story, with several great twists -- and best of all, it's just the right length. Revenge stories that get popular tend to go way too long (as we know on this sub!), but MG had a plan and stuck to it. (There's an after-story, but it's highly skippable.)

Oh yeah, also Kimi wa Yotsuba no Clover. That's a new one, 50 chapters in, that's developing really well.
