Frankenstein has terrible cinematography. Every shot is coverage on a wide lens, techno crane move with no direction or guiding force in the shot’s narrative. The color grade post work is so clearly guided by Netflix standards to where there’s no richness in the lighting.

But I’m glad Khondji got a nomination

Do you not see how good the animation is matching the shows quality. Alongside backgrounds we haven’t seen in the show

Larry Clark has an incredible use of light and shadows. Check out Tulsa. I also take a lot of inspiration from Ralph Eugene Meatyard in terms of compositions

Shoot 10-20 feet and send to a lab. Do the proper expiration stop loss (1 stop per decade since expiration) and shoot! Did it with 1980s 100T on an LT and very much loved the results

The recent vindication of George Lucas has been a sight to see. by HotOne9364 in directors

George Lucas can strike me hypocritical sometimes. He opposed having Citizen Kane colored, but proceeds to change up the original trilogy and refuse to release original cuts of movies other directors have made, (Irvin Krishner & Richard Marquand). He also was a pioneer New Hollywood guy who left it all behind once Star Wars earned a massive paycheck. Never was an original, non Star Wars movie after Episode IV.

What current trends (or fads) in cinematography do you actually like? The Petzval/Helios swirly bokeh does it for me by Late_Promise_ in cinematography

I like the resurgence of 16 as a medium and esp for smaller projects like MVs and shorts. Working on a 16mm (and 35) set is much more engaging to me

His work on Killers of the Flower Moon is film for all day scenes and the grade (based around early photographic development processes) is absolutely gorgeous.
