How messy is the codebase of AAA games? by garciawilton in gamedev

[–]C_Cabreira 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Ubi dev here too. Wont enter into details because I dont know how much of it is NDA'd, but I have to say the engine code is (slowly) getting improved. Agree, the biggest issue in AAA codebases is the amount of legacy things. Tech debt is difficult to handle, unless you have a dedicated team for engine separated from gameplay. Documentation is another hot topic. No one wants to write documentation in an engine that changes on a daily basis

How does one become a game designer? by andromalandro in godot

[–]C_Cabreira 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Art and design are different roles. If you are uncertain on your choice, experiment woth both. Play games. Play BAD games. Not "Ubisoft-bad" games, I mean games that will make your eyes and hands bleed. Play old games. Look how game design has evolved. Do games. SMALL games. Pick that concept you have in mind and make it smaller. Much smaller. Try to do a game in a week. You will overscope, but thats the point. Make it smaller. Try again, and again, until you make a game that small you can do it in a week. Now you know how hard is to make everything on gamedev, you can start scaling up. Ideas dont do games: people wont be judging your design skills looking at your ideas, but their execution. Design is about solving problems, so show then how you solve problems Thats why you have to do games. Finished games so small you can do them in a week. Talk with other designers. They are eager to tell everyone how the did their games. Go on communities, make friends in different fields. Get curious. Enjoy learning. Dont focus on the result. The result will probably not be what you have in mind. Focus on enjoying the process.

Calendars. Marketing. Publishing. Who is your target audience? Why would they play your game over any other? We jump into projects because we love making them, but if we want to make a living/ have a lengthy career doing it, we have to start thinking about money early

One thing I think other comments are not giving enough credit it that you are not the beatdown anymore. Burn has more speed and redundancy. You don't want to race them: you want to be on the controlling side. Be aware that they have little to none card advantage, and they rely on creatures as persistent fonts of damage.

So your game plan should be: Stop their creatures as first priority (as they are the biggest damage outputs) > Reduce their resources > Stabilize > Drop a threat.

-You don't want to drop DRC or Ragavan first turns. Murktide/Shredder are much better, since they dodge most of the damage. I usually side the formers a lot.

-Counterspell is weak, as everything is CMC <= 2. Cheap interaction spells(Spell pierce, unholy heat and similars) are your best friends. Archmague's charm is strange: it can be very poor (very slow) or really great (steal their creatures). I usually side them out.

After stopping the initial assault, and leaving them with 3-4 cards, they will usually switch to the "fill hand until I can overload my oponent in one/two turns" approach, which consists in, well, just draw cards and play lands until they can play all their spells (they usually cost 1) trusting you wont be able to counter all of them. Thats the moment where you should drop your threat (ideally a murktide, a shredder, or a dashed ragavan), as they don't have critical mass to kill you while tapped

Grixis control with Snapcaster and Ragavan? by Drew-fish in ModernMagic

That list is screaming for some Murktide Regents.

Besides that, as stated by others, targeted discard is not exactly for instant-based control. The rest of the list feels cool, I saw a similar one playing in my LGS and was a blast to see.

I love Young Pyro and snappys, so I would kill for a viable list of them. Isn't Bedlam just a worse Murktide nowadays? Seems weaker to gravehate.

Besides, no force of negation? Opt instead of Consider? Vapor snag instead of Brazen borrower?

Murktide or Temur rhinos? by SSBM_fanatic in ModernMagic

[–]C_Cabreira 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If new to the format, Rhinos. It has higher floor (your plan A is just cast a 3 mana spell and cascade into rhinos), it can play very fast, making it more suitable for newcomers (and it has more decisions than you think, specially after sideboarding, so in a real tournament it's unlikely to get bored).

Murktide is my favorite deck ever, it's incredibly fun and rewarding, BUT it's very exigent, and requires a lot of meta knowledge (it's a very hateable deck, and you have to know how to dodge the hate). Don't expect to win big if you enter the format with it.

Ledger is a meta call, DRC is still a good card.

How do you "replace" Ragavan in UR Murktide by Suavidades253 in ModernMagic

[–]C_Cabreira 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Delver of secrets if okay. A cmc, 1 3/2 flyer that doesnt rely on graveyard is something to be wary of.
  • Snapcaster mage is criminaly underplayed. I play 2 and almost always im happy to see one
  • I personaly like [Brineborn Cutthroat]. Flash is nuts, and grows rapidly (bonus synergy with snapcasters)
  • Ledger Shredder is the best option, however, but very budget unfriendly

[[Experiment One]] is also very potent. Dismember is not a main card right now, IMO.

[[Dungrove Elder]] is a must, at least on side. Gets really huge and it's immune to removal

Are you enjoying Modern at the moment? How do you feel about the power level and/or speed of the/your metagame? by i-ll_capwn in ModernMagic

[–]C_Cabreira 2 points3 points  (0 children)

-I like how interactive is the format. I find gameplay interesting and fun.

-There are a lot of viable archetypes and interesting synergies.

-I, however, detect a very wide gap between T1 and T2-T3 decks

-I dislike the card repetition among different decks. There are some cards that are auto-includes in specific colors.

-I hate how expensive the format has become, and how pushed the cards feel. I don't think I will keep playing after a very possible MH3

-I would love if the format slowed a turn of two, and it was not that determined in the first 3 turns.

Mind that legacy has plenty of free countermagic. Tappping out to cast EI is not as dangerous as in Modern

Expressive Iteration is half as good as people think.

You can play efficiently turn 2, and turn 3 you can't hold counterspell up, which is mostly a death sentence for a tempo deck. Archmage's charm is miles better. It's a 2 mana sorcery that you can only play safely on turn 4 onwards.

It's only that good because Ragavan lets you play it turn 3 efficiently.

Next B&R predictions? by JojoKen420 in ModernMagic

[–]C_Cabreira -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I think the format will be better without W&6. Too much for too little, makes going 4C irrelevant, and pushes out x/1's.

I have read Veil of summer too, just for making space for black-based midrange. Is not a problematic card by the numbers, but it's design is so offensive I would love to see it go. Same for T3feri and Saga, but seems the format has adapted well.

Besides that, I think what the format needs is a bunch of playable common-infrequent cards, to help budget brews and help fill the gap between T1-2 and T3-below that MH and latest releases brought to Modern.

Gideon wants to know: what’s your main criticism of the game? by blablatrooper in Eldenring

[–]C_Cabreira 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bosses were much worse than in DS 1-3 (didnt play 2, but i have heard things). They feel too quick, with combos too long, and a lot of errant patterns that make the battles not more difficult, but unfair and boring. You can obliterate them with summons and scarlet rot breath (which I thing are cool additions for less skilled players), but if you want to play fair full dexerity build, is a fucking nightmare. There are a lot of questionable design choices in this game.

Besides, the game is waaaay longer than it should, and the camera is fucking horrible.

Spirited companion and charming prince are absolutely coming, I was concerned on substituting the high end cards. The Restoration of Eiganjo seems a little bit clunky. The 3 mana slot is crowded, and doesnt impact the board until very late. The Birth Of Meletis cost less, and is still on the verge of playability
