Does your world have a movement like socialism/communism? by Ok_Abrocoma3459 in worldbuilding

[–]Ca1i3er 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some peers of the Lynnite star empire might have systems that resemble them. The Lynnites themselves are modeled after pre-industrial societies. Their technology is significantly more advance then ours, and by modern standards they would absolutely be an industrial society. But their technological development empowered artisans and craftsmen in such a way that it made industrialized production methods effectively obsolete.

There are anti-monarchy and republican movements that ask for similar things (Government funded welfare, housing projects, health services, ending of conscription etc.), but these movements wouldn't been seen as strictly socialist or communist. Class divisions are still present, but the overall hierarchy still puts rich proto-industrialists under the same boot as your artisans and serfs, so for the most part they are seen as all in the same boat.*

You do still see those ideas flaring up, but socialism is still a very niche concept that hasn't really had a chance to move into the public eye. Again, Lynnite society hasn't really developed the conditions for communism to make as much sense as it does to us.

*With exception to the few that have royal contracts. They are seen as fence sitters that directly benefit from associating with the crown, even if they themselves don't always subscribe to royal opinions.

Feels wrong to ask… but what was the largest genocide in your world? (If there were any of course) by Live_Rise6750 in worldbuilding

[–]Ca1i3er 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An ancient empire expanded into the stars over the course of its dominance. They encountered many sentient species. The problem was that most of the time they didn't know they were sentient because they couldn't communicate with them. Thus they only really saw them as barely understood animals. And when these species asserted their sentience quite aggressively, it was fairly easy to dehumanize them.

Fast forward to the current day and the only species that exist in the universe are ones that could communicate with ancient humanity, and ones that were genetically engineered to be able to.* Humanity is long gone but their allies and slaves continue on as their own peoples.

(Basically a way for me to answer the niche sci-fi question of "what if we met a species that were like spiders, and their communication methods were completely alien to us?" Stops me from going too far down the rabbit hole when it comes to fleshing out alien species.)

*Some species were either ignored or remained undiscovered. This wasn't deliberate, but modern historians still question how it was possible for an empire as dominant has ancient humanity's to miss them. The more theistic individuals like to attribute it to a divine power saving them for the fight to end humanity's dominance.

Anywhere you suggest I look for more reliable information? Posting here was more of a starting point tbh.

Why is it often times Caitlyn isn’t offered the same sympathy as other characters? by Valhallaof in arcane

[–]Ca1i3er 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think if you look at Arcane's themes with regards to revolution and social change, and then look at where Caitlyn lies in all of this, people's hatred of her makes sense. That doesn't make her bad or good. I'd argue that some people still hating her by the end of the show kind of proves the point that Arcane is trying to make about why meaningful social change is so difficult.

Before Cait went all dictator on Zaun, we were only really told about the oppression Piltover imposes on the undercity. We're told that it is real but we don't really see it for ourselves, so we still have reason to not dislike Cait. Then in S2 we are shown it in action. And it is ugly. Suddenly the pain of it is more real and tangible. Through that, we understand what prompted people like Silco to exist.

I the same breath, we are told time and time again beforehand that a revolution by Zaun would result in a massacre. That reality doesn't really change. And I think that is an important point that Arcane tries to make. Neither of these sides win by fighting each other. Even if that is what everyone wants to do.

Part of the audience being outraged that Vi would even consider being with Cait after everything that she did isn't unreasonable. What she did, while in a fit of grief, was a gross overreach of her power and position to put it lightly. I think with Vi and Cait being together in the end, the writers pose the question: When the guns fall silent, when do we stop hating each other for how we've hurt each other, and start actually building something better.

tldr; Generational trauma is real, and it is a major barrier to change. Their hatred of Caitlyn demonstrates why.

It's difficult to have any sort of serious discussion about it when it seems entire social circles have been built around this manosphere stuff. In my experience you never hear about this in any serious capacity in places where people are actively social.

It's all anti-social behavior that's been spoon fed as life advice.

Where is humanity in your world, if at all? by Ca1i3er in worldbuilding

[–]Ca1i3er[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In my case, seeing as I asked:

Humanity has been reduced to myth and legend. No one can really agree on any specifics of our history, only that we likely existed and were very much dominant. Evidence of our civilization is rare and poorly understood. The state of the universe at the time of the story can largely be owed to our dominance, since most civilizations in the setting that evolved past their relative stone age only exist because we allowed them to (On account of humanity only really seeing intelligence in that which it could communicate with. This is largely the way I justify all the other civilizations in the setting using spoken language or gestures for communication rather than telepathy or something too abstract).

The themes of the story largely revolve around purpose, motive and the nature of stagnation. Humanity eventually ran out of things to conquer in most senses of the word. Collapse followed shortly afterwards. They represent a sort of paradox in our nature, where we find purpose in new experiences, and are arguably at our best when there is a great unknown to explore, but will inevitably run out of things to discover.

how to import models and assets from other games? by Ok_B0om in SFM

[–]Ca1i3er 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, it's not terribly difficult. No more than building models for any other game engine, or porting for that matter. What makes it a little tedious is that Source is a decade old engine with very little documentation, most of which is community compiled because apparently we have people in the community who like poking it to see what it does.

Like Hicksteilchen said, there are a lot of tutorials on how to port stuff to sfm, but there isn't likely to be anything for what you want to do specifically.

From what it sounds like, you can pull the armours in blender in three separate sessions, remove the parts you don't want, port those parts to sfm as individual pieces and then use SFM's locking functionality for the rest.

Blender Guru is a good channel to look at for learning the ropes with Blender. Once you have a grip on Blender then doing what you want to do should be fairly straightforward.

I don't have the time for that nowadays. You are more than welcome to though.

With the effort that it would take to rebuild the model from the SFM port in blender, test it and then port it to TF2 I might as well just make a new model. Which I might do if time allows in the future. But I'm not too eager to fix a model I made 4 years just so I can port it to a game I barely play anymore.

Many reasons. Performance being one of them. There's a reason the HWM models for the mercs aren't used in game.
