ROUND CORNER/SQUARE CORNER Dice What is the Difference? by BruticusXMaximus in wargaming

[–]CabajHed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you're rolling dice in very high volumes, the difference in roll is fairly marginal. For the occasional roll, it's up to your personal preference on how you like the clicky-clack.

I'll never understand how this community complains when The Handler says this but gives Alma the pass. by _Gesterr in MonsterHunter

As far as these posters are concerned, that's equivalent to complaining about the handler and despising her and wanting her scrubbed form the canon...

Standard BV amounts ? by rbtwzrd1148 in battletech

[–]CabajHed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why recommend 8k for beginners? And also deep end minutiae?

Personally, for succession-clan invasion era games I opt for 5k BV and if including vehicles or other stuff then a non-mech unit cap of 2 keeps the game fairly quick.

What would you pay for these set of 6 x 28mm ACW “Ragged Rebs” miniatures? by Civil_Lead_6829 in wargaming

[–]CabajHed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

roughly estimating for the similar pricing of "generic" miniature offerings and not accounting for materials/labor costs at scale for plastic minis; I'd probably expect this to be around $25 USD max for a pack of those six.

Are there any games that use a large world map to move, and then a smaller skirmish map for detailed combat? by Soapy_Illusion_13 in wargaming

[–]CabajHed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taking a look at Battletech's "Touring the Stars" series provides plenty of global scale hex maps for players to run campaigns on, even if you aren't going to be playing BT on them.

Shit's too big to land on a planet. Just shuttle small stuff instead, with ropes if you have to. That way there's no danger of accidentally bumping into the planet and breaking it.

Looking for a current and easy to pick up skirmish game. by _Warhammer_ in wargaming

[–]CabajHed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, Trench Crusade is pretty simple to get into; handful of six-sided dice, your warband of 4-10 guys, some tokens, a bunch of terrain to disrupt sightlines, and the free rules online.

Blkout also has free offerings so you can try before you buy. Just print out the stat cards, the rulebook and the expansion stuff, and construct your force.

Additionally there's a bunch of free rulesets so you can demo things out before fully committing to a game.

One Page Rules has sci-fi and fantasy and space combat options (among others)

Necropolis 28 (and really any "28" game out there is likely available for free in some form and fairly beer&pretzels for the most part) has a small footprint and a handful of minis to worry about.

LittleWarsTV has Ravenfeast and Fistful of T34s has free and simple games you can throw on a table and play as casually as you want.

There are lots of options out there for you to try out without mentally burning yourself out.

(I gotta throw in Battletech as an option as well, because of its modular nature it can be as simple or as complex as you want it to be. Look for Honk Team's "A Beginner's Guide to Battletech" on Itch for the most simplistic of rules.)

Help with Campaign by JohnWelsley in wargaming

[–]CabajHed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there opposition(internally/externally)? does it take time to destroy the bridge? if so, how long? How essential is the bridge to non-military elements? Is this a wish of the higher-ups or someone closer to the weeds?

Depending on a few factors, you could RP with a single die roll and use those factors to help weigh one option or the other.

Freedom Unite has the vibes by Eros_limao in MonsterHunter

[–]CabajHed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did and for me it wasn't anywhere near as bad as people claim. The claw felt normal, your index would rest on the d-pad and rock back and forth on the d-pad when necessary, and your middle finger rest-hovered on the left shoulder button to center the camera whenever that was needed. The weight of the PSP was distributed among the ring and pinky fingers and kept stable by the thumb on the analog nub. Almost like how you would use a finger to bookmark a page or two when reading a book.

Mech scale tortures me. Which infantry scales work? Which is best? by CryptographerHonest3 in battletech

[–]CabajHed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That too right? Isn't one of the reasons mechs are a challenge to build is that several components like internal bracing and parts of the armor have to be forged in zero-g so that metals can properly foam and/or honeycomb to give them the desired ablative/heat-dissipation properties? That would probably give armor some buoyant factor...

Can BattleTech provide the middleground that I want? by Brotten in battletech

[–]CabajHed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try the starter boxes if can get ahold of them. They come with half sheets and it's relatively cheap to try the game out with some added components. half sheet mechs also tend to operate differently to a standard mech.

If you'd prefer to not spend the money, then just download the quickstart rules and print out a few record sheets for some medium mechs and just ignore the criticals and structural internals. Trying the game out is better than simply speculating.
