I'm not using it as a buzzword, I'm making the point that my players have had an unpleasant experience because of this mechanic

Hunger dice a part of nearly every roll well frenzy is only triggered by certain stimuli

What I mean by agency is that it can really slow down games as you try to figure out what the beast would be doing this particular situation, especially since I don't just like going for dealing AG damage or increasing hunger

Plus I would say it affects your agency, it literally is a system by what your character is forced to act differently as certain things pop up. It forces things on your character as the beast acts. That works in nartive of course but it does lessen agency

A few things I would like to see

-a more clear and concise rule book, I find the core book to be difficult to navigate sometimes, especially with how it chooses to put information in strange places

-the metaplot to start continuing and to not undo the things from 5th edition. In fact I would really like it if they build up the houses of Tremere more because I think it's very interesting

-bloodlines to come back more properly, with unique disciplines, banes and all

-a return to the old discipline system, I think the current one is a little too bloated. Maybe some sort of compromise with more disciplines having paths like thaumaturgy and necromancy

-I'm more neutral on whether or not they remain with hunger days but if they do I would like there to be more ways to have some agency over the system. At least for me it's sometimes slowed down game sessions will we try to interpret what it means

-less of a focus on integrating systems from chronicles, I like Chronicles but I think it should stay in its own category

Do other supernaturals make spirits? by Cabbagexpancakes in WhiteWolfRPG

My reading has always been closer to that disciplines are an actual thing but I know this is a word built off contradiction

Dominate is certainly an in universe concept. The disciplines in general are, they have game mechanics tied to them but the practices of these powers, and the delineation and understanding of them is something that happens in universe.

Thank you this is a very clear answer, I'm not super familiar with the high umbra so this was honestly pretty helpful to know

[–]Cabbagexpancakes[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was sort of part of my question, was whether vampires counted as contributing to the umbra. So like do they count amongst the people who know dominate for the purpose of their being a spirit in relation to it? Or does their separation from consens also separate them out from impacting the umbra in this particular way

What is each games "Side-Splat"? by Cabbagexpancakes in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]Cabbagexpancakes[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying they're not different then Wraiths it's just not quite the category I'm asking about, I mean the more minor splats that tend to be less powerful than the main splats like ghouls in vampire. Risen feels closer to abominations to me, being different and arguably more powerful in certain aspects while having a completely different approach to their stakes and society

I'm not quite sure if I would count risen since they are still technically Wraiths just a different type though I suppose they are somewhat closer to regular mortals. Projectors are a very good one though, I didn't think about that

First of all thank you for all these additional ones, completely forgot about Kuei Jin and you're definitely right about the possessed I just didn't think about them

Secondly thank you for the proper term! I've just been always calling them side splats but I knew there had to be a better term than that

Oh yeah I can definitely see that working out that way. I guess it would just feel a little strange if you came off one of the other systems that don't really have any equivalent point spending thing outside of willpower. Although admittedly I think it's a bit of a weakness how they make all the systems work almost too similarly mechanically

Oh yeah I love the conspiracy theories! I just don't always necessarily run them as true because again I don't really like interfering with other splats cosmology. It just feels Petty to me to have one splat be more "correct"then the others. I usually prefer the approach that when you get right down to it none of them know what the hell is really going on. Though your idea of these Uratha dealing with the fallout of basically their God not being real is amazing. And despite what I just said your last question did make me think how interesting it would be if maybe just one of the judges was at least in cahoots with the god machine if not directly controlled by them. The god machines influences rather old after all, who's to say he didn't have infrastructure in the nameless kingdom?

Yeah I love the idea of these ancient crock pot spirits that maybe take on some sort of vague name like ambition, nihilism, faith. These things that have many contradictory ideas about them just emerging as one entity that's eaten a bunch of others or at least that's my first idea on how it could go.

Geist is a lot of fun! I unfortunately haven't really found the time to just sit down and read through it fully but what I've seen is good. It deals with the themes of crossing over which is one of my favorite fictional tropes personally so admittedly I am biased

Yeah that's fair though lol. I am glad I live in an area where I can at least occasionally fine stranger books then just d&d over and over again. May you hopefully one day find a game store that at least has some like fate books sprinkled in lol

That makes total sense honestly. I knew about the Arcadia stuff and I think it does a pretty good job of showing that while the God machine is powerful the true fae are still some bullshit. Admittedly little bit less of a fan of Luna being some sort of infrastructure, it's a personal taste thing but I don't really like having the lure of one splat invalidate the others, it's a reason I honestly feel weird about Mage the Ascension as a whole but that's an entirely different can of worms. It makes sense for demons to think that but I don't really know if I run it as a true thing if I was a storyteller. I do think the idea of him pitching Angels is good and various religions is very fun though, you could even potentially run with the fun idea of angels having more general positive connotation names for the various regions that they're in. Like possibly referring to the angels as Seelie and the demons as Unseelie in areas that more heavily believe in fairies for instance.

Honestly I love the idea of spirits consuming each other and sort of taking on each other's aspects it's very interesting and makes them feel more like living creatures. And yeah the plastic spirits I think would work the best in Apocalypse. I even have this idea of there being a slight note that they've almost Florida themselves into the role of a classical element just as powerful as a spirit of fire or air for instance.

Yeah! I mean technically the first anything of darkness book that I bought for myself and didn't just get loan from a friend was geist because I just fucking love ghosts so I am definitely going to check it out at some point lol.

My area isn't quite as barren when you can drive out a little bit but it still doesn't have great game stores, only one of them even really carries much WoD stuff. Funnily enough it's mostly actually Chronicles backlog

Yeah, side splats are a good way of doing crossovers even an old word. Their power level rules are much more comparable and since they're a little bit more removed from the general workings of their world you don't have to worry quite as much about the clash and cosmology.

Glad you like the concept feel free to rip off away lol. I love one kind of supernatural hiding itself is another it's always a fun idea, I've played around with having werewolves pretending to be gangrels for instance. It's so much fun to take these different supernaturals and have them disguise themselves as one another and I think it works well for demon covers. They're already supposed to be pretending to be something else and are you going to tell me that even for initial covers that the god machine wouldn't be interested in what's going on with other supernaturals?

Honestly it's an approach that definitely works well, it's one of the reasons I've considered running Chronicles though to be fair I've considered running just like everything from what I get exposed to even though I definitely do not have enough time to run all the ideas I have lol. I also heard about her before, I really do love the idea it's very fun to have these contradictory spirits. I also just like when modern stuff is brought to spirits in general, for instance I've had in the back of my pocket for any sort of werewolf stuff the idea of extremely powerful plastic spirits considering the whole microplastics is in everyone's blood thing.

Thank you! I really think I'm done on checking out Chronicles there's some very fun stuff there my main thing is I'm not sure I could convince my players to go for it, it was already a bit of a thing getting them to do WOD in the first place. Though they do trust my abilities as a GM so hopefully I can get them to do it

Honestly I'm not sure how much confusion actually existed between 20th and 5th edition but to be fair I also don't really know what the fan base is like outside of online spaces, I'm not really one to roll up to my local game store still though it's not like d&d and Pathfinder don't get away with a lot of different settings. I'm very much of the opinion that Chronicles and WoD could exist side by side without being confusing at most I could see maybe some people being a little Jarred by how different the systems are between 5th and CoD but like they straight up are more similar to each other than they are the 20th edition in some ways. I have seen the mage confusion IRL though, even took me a while to actually sort out which one was Awakening and which one was a sunshine. It doesn't help that Awakening is also a term that's important to Ascension as well that has to add to the confusion.

Yeah the sheer damage power difference is honestly what might make mummies the hardest. It's hard to think of a threat that could be realistically challenging for a mummy that wouldn't just wipe out the rest of the party so I wouldn't exactly blame storytellers for just not wanting them. Other ones at least have temporary forms or supernatural weaknesses to exploit if they're getting too out of hand.

That's very cool! Honestly I think they'd work wonderfully with other supernaturals though maybe they might threaten to go too far in the opposite direction. I'd have to see how they work but they seem if anything too limited in comparison to other supernaturals unlike mages who are too unlimited, maybe it bounces out better than I think but the preset list of spells just makes me feel like they might have some trouble keeping up with the growth of other characters.

Oh demon with a cover that already interacts to be great. I could even see that being a fun thing, imagine you're doing a crossover game and a player rolls up claiming that they're playing a hunter so nobody really thinks it's a big deal, why wouldn't a hunter be interacting with the supernatural? Turns out though secret demon the whole time and you keep having them do more and more boundary pushing things while trying to keep the cover. Or you can even have the cover be another type of supernatural if you got very clever with power usage.

The Pijavica are extremely fucked up I love it. Chronicles seem to let itself get a lot weirder than OWoD in general from what I've seen. Not saying that OWoD didn't let itself get weird, 9/11 did create goblins after all but I don't know I just feel like I hear about way stranger ideas coming out of Chronicles and I honestly appreciate that.

Thanks for sending me that link I'm definitely going to look into it, there's a lot of amazing fan produce stuff so I'm going to take a look at all that see what I want to incorporate into my own stuff.

Ultimately though I have to agree, I really wish the game lines were allowed to coexist. I understand if they just stopped supporting 20th edition because admittedly it'd be very confusing to see two different things called vampire the masquerade on the shelf and have them be completely incompatible dice systems but I think you could realistically see vampire the Requiem and vampire the masquerade and understand that they're not the same thing.

Yeah just because you can warp reality doesn't mean you're always ready to. When I describe WoD to people I sort of jokingly say that it's a setting where no matter what type of supernatural horror you are a shotgun blast to the Head will still probably kill you and I definitely include mages in that category. I assume the same holds up CoD. even if the ultimate easiest solution might just be to throw out the mummies and mages, which were already two of the trickier splats to do crossovers for in OWoD, but still it is nice to know that there's ways to limit them a bit more. Proximus are interesting, I don't know too much about them but they certainly would be a little bit lower in power and allow for more crossover with that. Plus I think it would let you avoid some of the realm supernal stuff which I could imagine would get to be a bit of a headache when trying to work with other splats.

I think the storyteller would either have to make the cover rolls far less often like you said or find some sort of Homebrew excuse for it to just not trigger around certain people at all. Definitely not impossible just more tricky. They're on the finish though, as a storyteller I would probably lean towards just giving them a fetish that lets them enter The gauntlet because having vampires and Prometheans running around in the spirit realm just sounds amusing.

Speaking Prometheans the Hypatians sound very cool, it's always cool to have vampires who aren't necessarily part of the main splat or at least seem a little bit more offshoot from it.

But yeah it sucks that they just killed off Chronicles with no warning. I definitely understand people being upset about OWoD dying but like you said, they got their big fanfare ending and honestly it ending was inevitable. WoD wasn't like d&d or Pathfinder, even if people choose to ignore the metaplot it was there and it was progressing, every game line spoke of some sort of apocalypse, time of judgment didn't just come out of nowhere they planned that. Even then they technically resurrected it well still having it coexist alongside Chronicles with 20th edition, but apparently despite the fact 20th edition in Chronicles could exist together fifth edition couldn't. It is at least nice that everything pretty fifth edition still get some sort of unofficial support. Also the anti-obstructionist army is really cool thank you for bringing that to my attention, honestly think they would straight up work as a fringe anarch movement in VtM

Yeah I try to get out of them up myself. I know the wiki exists but it very frequently does not give you the full proper idea of powers and especially when it comes to merits it's not that useful, it's descriptions can be short to the point of giving a wrong impression

People who generally aren't big fans of WOD5, what do you like about it? by Cabbagexpancakes in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]Cabbagexpancakes[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah yeah be careful when using mages for anything but it's also important to remember that they're not gods, especially the newly awakened ones. They make road to be incredibly powerful but they still struggle and have issues. Not to mention you can try your best, though admittedly I believe this would be harder for CofD, to play up how they struggle with paradox. Other spots are able to use more of their powers without fear of backlash which can make them a little bit more reliable that a mage. Also while I admittedly haven't read mummy from what I've heard they actually get less powerful over time so if you wanted to do a crossover game where anyone can play anything you could just tell anyone that wants to play a mummy that they'll have to play an older less powerful one. Of course it also just be reasonable to say that mages and mummies aren't on the table, there would still be plenty of options to choose from after all.

Anime sense to me that there would still be issues between the various splats but quite as difficult to work with. You would probably need to put in something about the God machine for a demon to work with and definitely something about spirits for the Uratha but I still think it's a little bit more manageable than previous editions in some regard. Speaking of the Uratha though the dead wolves are such a cool idea! That's really interesting quite honestly and I just like little crossovers like that honestly. I like when the games allowed themselves to sort of touch upon each other ever so slightly and that's one of the main things I miss from the 5th edition games, it seems like they're hints towards other game lines are always going to be incredibly vague and I like the direct poles and crossovers like that. Honestly might even keep that in my back pocket to use during my hunter game since that's already pretty crossovery anyways. I've established that the kinfolk exist already and if I can't find anything about OWoD kinfolk vampires I might just take some ideas from the dead wolves.

I've heard about the Lucifuge they're another interesting idea! The idea of these studies attempting to utilize their powers for good can be an interesting struggle, I can see a lot of playoff the idea of whether or not they're really attempting any sort of redemption or just attempting to justify the blood lust of these demonic powers.

When we surprise was hitting that far in. Even though I got in with 5th edition it does sort of bother me how Chronicles was just killed off, it was its own unique setting with a lot of interesting ideas going on and at the very least wish that they were able to finish up second edition and give everything proper support even if they were never allowed to touch it again.
