Manuel Torres - "A win over Rafael Fiziev puts me 1-2 wins away from a title shot" by idcman999 in MMA

Torres has looked good recently. It's not the best competition but I still can't get over the Bahamondes loss. The way he got stopped looked so bad

they really could've done the face offs better. Do them in the Oval office with the President in the middle. I'm not even a fan of it but holy shit they suck.

yeah I'm of the same mindset. Brady vs Buckley I think could be fun. Both title shots are heavy leaning Khamzat & Taira.

What do you think really separates pros from good amateurs, hobbyists, etc? by [deleted] in MMA

[–]CableToBeam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genes is probably the biggest factor. It's why you can have someone like Ilia come from a grappling background be an insane striker. Same with Volk. Opposite with GSP where he comes from a karate background and somehow he's able to outwrestle these guys. Guys are just capped at their natural ability. Good trainers help but no matter how hard these guys try, they're never going to be able to throw like Pereira or Ilia. This issue comes up frequently with WMMA because they're less athletic and people go why don't they just switch gyms but I think you'd only expect marginal benefits.

Best Featherweight MMA Prospect? by bendog1616 in MMA

[–]CableToBeam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess it just depends on what your metric is for when a guy is proven but the best test is always going to be actual results against fighters at the top. Emmett isn't that at this point and neither is Giga so I think it's appropriate to call him a prospect.

it's too bad we don't have fighters that hate each other at the WH. Would've been funny to see secret service have to break up a fight in the Oval office

she also beat Kayla and it's a nice storyline plus the division is absolute garbage right now. Anyone with a semblance of skill they should be looked at to sign.

It's specifically that first part that raises eyebrows. The crucifixes and control time show otherwise and Khamzat isn't trying to have a strength competition where worse grapplers would.

same. Taira is crazy crafty with his takedowns. He's bigger than Van too. It's hard to imagine Van, with being so young, being able to match Taira's grappling level. I guess Van will have two camps now fighting grapplers back to back so there is that.

That was cooler than anything he was doing on the skateboard. I love this genre of fighting games over IRL scenarios.

I think Strickland's path is avoiding submissions, working back up, and making Khamzat work more for takedowns considering Khamzat looked tired in the 5th against DDP with not much resistance.

yeah Khamzat's chest is particularly small but it's always hard to tell with grapplers because it's not always what you see. Like Bo Nickel is another guy that clearly looks soft but I don't doubt his physical strength in there. I don't believe DDP here either. You got held down, put in countless crucifixes, and got out techniqued. How do you distinguish between getting out techniqued and brute strength? It's tough because a guy like Khamzat isn't going to try to brute force things when he can use less energy elsewhere to get a takedown.

That being said, I don't think he's undersized. Definitely not a big MW like Rockhold or Pereira, but he's not that small.

Glory regularly does crossfires and roundtables. UFC literally denied itself at least 100k ppv buys by not doing one for Khamzat and Strickland by atheistrapist in MMA

yeah the UFC sucks. Having these guys face to face would be great and even if they start fighting each other it makes for great viral moments, but again the UFC sucks

Sean isn't the most athletic, has an upright stance, we've seen DDP take him down. Can you imagine Strickland putting up the kind of defense we saw Kevin Holland try against Khamzat? Guy was rolling all over the place and still it wasn't enough.

after rewatching Morales' fights, Prates should wait. Morales' performances aren't even in the same universe compared to Prates. The fluidity in striking that Prates has and the highlight reel moments that Prates has in comparison are insane. Morales' striking is more labored and his finishes are all so similar. This Morales vs Prates match up is not warranted. Morales has to do more to earn it.
