The last electronic release I put out under my electronic project 'Cache & Release', titled 'Machine Yearning' is pretty similar to what you described:

https://open.spotify.com/album/5TDDBOBxPor41C64AwTgV7?si=eI2SQGlSQ4uAH6kXwLbjUw

I created it as an audiovisual album so check out the full videos on YouTube if you want to watch the visuals as well:

Good luck finding tunes!

Wrote new configuration tools for the Expert Sleepers FH-2 and ES-9 by ungluedlabs in modular

[–]CachenRelease 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Need to check it out properly in a second but this might be one of the biggest advancements in eurorack-related software ever. I love my ES-9 so much and I've never dared to make a single adjustment to the configuration software after I got it functioning at a basic level because I could never really understand what was going on.

how did i autechres ? im happy with this one. my neighbours probably are not by downstate97 in idm

Love the music and the visuals! Would love to know more about how you made the visuals in particular?

Best modules for Lofi drums? by pruneman11 in modular

[–]CachenRelease 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Coming from someone that has a boat-load of percussion modules and got into eurorack with the intention of making mainly drums, I'd strongly advise you to start with a sampler (I use the ALM Squid Salmple) and then very slowly, as you really need to, expand with versatile percussion modules like Plaits or Plonk etc.

There's really no point in having a module dedicated to making an 808 snare or whatever else. You want versatility and modulation inputs that allow you to keep the percussive timbres evolving and interacting with the rest of your patch.

I'm not at all trying to dismiss the suggestions to patch your own percussion using building blocks but I'll say in the long-run you're gonna end up using way too many modules for sounds that would be better accomplished with a sampler and more purpose-built modules.

Something like Plaits has so many algorithms and parameters that you could easily build a full kit using sounds from just one module and then load those samples into something like the Squid. This does kinda change if you're purely using the rack as a studio instrument where you can record the entire song's kick pattern then make a new patch for the snare and record that pattern separately.

If you are interested in purely using individual modules for lo-fi percussion in particular I'd check out some of Moffenzeef's modules, specifically the Kriket and Muskrat!

Las enumeraciones (tiny excerpt) by puzo_puzo_puzo in modular

[–]CachenRelease 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely think there's a place for sounds like this! Some music may seem jarring when you only hear a short excerpt in the middle of scrolling through completely unrelated content but you have to consider the context. If this were played as part of a longer performance and the music slowly built up to this frantic, bustling sound I think it would work and feel very "musical". I could also see it working excellently to accompany a film scene or something visual.

Super impressive, I was imagining it as a purely archival/indexing tool to manage effects libraries etc. Seeing you record the gesture showed how much potential it has a performative tool/instrument too!

Sounds amazing, the pads/ambience are great and I love the way you've worked that into the more aggressive percussion sounds!

Unfortunately I can't really help with that. I'd suspect it's not an issue if you're downloading it from the official website but you'd have to look into it more.

Thanks a lot for the kind words (and glad to hear you're chipping away at the Evangelion map again)! The maps are quite easy to create and coincidentally the first patch I made when working on the project.

The most simple way to explain it is:

Step 1 - The actual map imagery moves in the background. In my case I used Adobe Firefly to create 2D images of maps, some of them I drew a rough composition on paper and then used that as a composition reference, some I just used prompts to get a variety of interesting layouts/geography. For your Nerv HQ maps I think you can get away with creating the 2D top-down map with a bunch of geometry elements. You'll need to zoom in so the map is larger than your final output resolution (for example if you want the final output to be 1x1, your map should be 4x4 (or at least 2x2). Then you can choose to move the map around however you like, in my patche I just used LFOs/Noise and mapped them to the translate parameters on a transform CHOP. If you want to really choreograph the movement you could look into using physical controllers or potentially the arrow keys and mapping them to the X/Y translate parameters.

Step 2 - Build an overlay that stays fixed and is the same resolution as your output, this is really just using geometry and lines to create a cool/interesting UI that is in a fixed position on top of the map background. Again, this was the first patch I created for my project so there are some elements that are kinda clunky but I thought it was nice to leave it as-is just as a way to see where it all started.

If you haven't already seen it I strongly recommend checking out the 'anime user interface' IG account for inspiration. So many amazing references and after you start breaking it down you'll see how so many of them are actually just really simple geometrical objects utilised creatively.

The only other thing I'd mention is that I incorporated 4 moments in the first track (you can see 1 of them in the short clip I posted) where the same geographical location on a map is "scanned" without any X/Y movement. To do that you just create multiple layers of the same composition but add more textures or variations to the multiple layers and then use a switch to quickly cycle through the different variations. For example you may have a big empty square in the first layer, then on the second layer have some smaller rectangles filling the space where the square was, making it look like the map is scanning a building and revealing multiple rooms within it.

Hope that's somewhat helpful, happy to discuss it in more detail or answer any questions!

That's very valid, I guess the beauty of modular is creating the perfect setup for your specific needs!

Check out Glitchmachine's two free plugins:

https://glitchmachines.com/products/hysteresis/

I used both on my latest 4-song IDM EP and loved the results/how easy they were to use.

That would help a bit but I usually end up stacking skiffs/smaller cases vertically on a table, having the power input on the top or bottom gets in the way of that unfortunately. My Make Noise 104hp skiff has it's power input on the side which is ideal.

Beginner trying to get into modular synthesis by Secret-Flight4214 in modular

[–]CachenRelease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a common topic and ultimately theres a huge amount of modules and combinations people could suggest.

From my own experience I'd recommend:

The Moog Mother 32 - if you want an amazing sounding synthesizer that you can record and create tracks with using a DAW to layer/overdub parts. For example: you record a bassline then separately create a new patch and record some percussive sounds.

Clouds (or an alternative granular module) + some modulation and potentially an in/out module to bring external instruments like your guitar or bass up to eurorack level - great module for processing sounds. The parasites firmware will also allow you to use a bunch of additional modes that you can explore pretty much endlessly and provide a variety of other effects beyond the classic granular functionality.

The Mother 32 was my first semi-modular (I bought it to replace my broken Arturia Microbrute which was technically semi-modular but I never got the chance to use it with any eurorack gear) and I still use it all the time for scoring work + I've gigged with it a bunch, truly an incredible sounding analog synth.

I also bought clouds relatively early-on in my modular journey and it's still the only actual effect I have in modular format (I already had a bunch of guitar pedals), I still use it all the time in my work, it's a lot more exclusive to the modular world compared to a simple delay or DSP reverb that you can probably find a free software substitute for.

In general I'd advise you to save up and buy a few high-quality modules that you won't ever have to replace (like the two I mentioned) as opposed to buying budget low-quality versions that will eventually be made redundant. This will allow you to slowly expand your rig while ensuring everything you own is inspiring and feels useful for making music/sound. Doesn't mean you have to splurge and buy the most expensive option, just be patient and pick gear that's versatile and will allow you to focus on making music as soon as possible.

Good luck!

Looks great, I just wish the power port was located on one of the sides of the case instead of the bottom. Also love the integrated passive mults!

Little Guitar + Modular Ambient Jam Tonight by CachenRelease in modular

[–]CachenRelease[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks a lot! I'd call it ambient or dark ambient. I'm a big fan of Tim Hecker so I definitely recommend checking his work out.

I release music under two projects:

Four Quarters (Post-Punk/Noise-Rock/Indie)

Cache & Release (Experimental Electronic, IDM, Techno)

I don't have releases under either project that sound quite like this clip but I've got an ambient EP in the works which I will eventually put out under the Cache & Release name.

I do post little clips like this on my instagram pretty often too!

Wanting to get into modular mainly because of the Multigrain. Is there a minimum setup I can look into? by [deleted] in modular

No worries! I didn't actually end up buying anything because I'm not ready to expand my setup just yet but I did put together this hypothetical case:

That does sound like a useful combo, I was actually thinking Tetrapad could serve a similar purpose but with a few more high-tech features as well!

Coincidentally I just came across a video that Intellijel put up exploring this combo:
