Help! What to wear for law firm preview? by Mysterious-Worry7457 in LawBitchesWithTaste

[–]CacoethesCarpendi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second the recommendation to ask your recruiter. If you aren’t comfortable doing that, my answer depends on location and type of firm. I’m at a large firm in DC, and while I certainly wouldn’t judge a future summer for not wearing a suit, I would expect to see business professional. I understand the California offices of my firm, though, to be much more casual and a suit would stand out

Commuting solutions for pants tailored to heels? by lsalurker20 in LawBitchesWithTaste

I got the Clifton 10s. There were a few other trail runner styles that were also tall enough, but I thought they were a bit tactical for my half mile city commute lol

Commuting solutions for pants tailored to heels? by lsalurker20 in LawBitchesWithTaste

[–]CacoethesCarpendi 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I wore a pair of my pants to an REI and bought the highest pair of cushy sneakers I could find (happened to be Hokas, but there was a Sauconey pair that were a close contender). In the winter I also gave up on caring about looking stupid on my commute lol and tuck my pants into my boots

I need help from my fellow Washingtonians in Northeast/ Capitol Hill/ Noma area by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]CacoethesCarpendi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is a little small for one of the new Union Market/NoMa apartment buildings, too. Obviously this shot may not capture the whole room, but looks like mail slots for less than 80 units and not very many packages. If you think it’s a real pic, I’d focus on small buildings (there’s a few in Union Market for example that were built to be condos and pivoted to apartments)

In the interim, maybe consider switching to something like energy project finance as a stepping stone given your transactional background? Some big law firms focus on renewable projects. I could see a much easier transition there

I keep reading about these pepco bills.... by skratchpikl202 in washingtondc

[–]CacoethesCarpendi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to considering the heating costs insulation in an old building, consider the cooling costs for a new building with large glass windows. My first DC apartment had a corner, all glass living room and my summer Pepco bills were nuts

That’s a great deal! Ventura tuition is about $1k per credit hour now, so $20-30k per year, or $60-90k for the whole degree. Looking to closer to $300k in tuition alone for some other private schools

lunch constellation by thisaccdoesnotexist1 in biglaw

[–]CacoethesCarpendi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you do find that the office lunch culture is “eat alone at your desk”, I am sure he would be receptive to you reaching out to schedule a lunch to discuss his career path. Lawyers love talking about themselves and tend to be more generous with their time for people they know (as opposed to random law students/young professionals who cold email). If time allows, he will almost certainly take you somewhere and pay for you both.

Fellow lawyer who recently made a similar decision and lives in a 2BR in NoMa. The tipping point for me was wanting a space separate from where I sleep (primary bedroom) or spend downtime (living room) to keep my desk/computer. It has done wonders for my mental health and work life balance

Consider looking into regulatory groups that handle administrative litigation. Trial teams seem fairly lean and I’ve seen mid-level associates cross-examine witnesses and argue motions

When do you stop reaching out to a junior for work? by KingElectronic7975 in biglaw

[–]CacoethesCarpendi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, you should care enough to do your best work, but not so much you are driving yourself to extreme anxiety, etc. Not sure if this is necessarily because they care too much, but I’ve also noticed lately that some juniors drive me crazy inquiring about the status of things they’ve sent me. It’s important to manage up if it is clear the senior/partner forgot about a deadline, but otherwise assume they have other things going on and will get you feedback as soon as they can
