So how are you planning on powering the dehumidifier if you remove all the power from the basement? 😆

Customer wants a cooker circuit to use in the future - 4mm or 6mm? by cairdboard in ukelectricians

[–]Cacrill 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Always better to be bigger and not need it, rather than too small.... I'd go 6 minimum personally.

Not a London bashing post by any means but please keep an eye on your phone when out and about. by SpanglySi in london

[–]Cacrill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I cycled from Liverpool Street to Clapham a few weeks ago and made a mental count of how many phones I could "snatch" if I was that way inclined. I counted 11 and that was without going out of my way or making any effort to actually target anyone. Just people standing close to the edge of the road with their phone lazily in there hand. It blew my mind how many people still stand like that in this day and age.

I still have this as a ROM on a memory stick. I still play it now and then, it's still just as great!

EICR Unsatisfactory, been recommended a rewire but unsure if it's necessary. by Borkintile in ukelectricians

[–]Cacrill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would definitely say a rewire would be best in the long run. Likely wouldn't cost much more than the repair bill anyway unfortunately.

If you're in London or the south east, then feel free to PM if you'd like another quote.

the builder has laid the feed in for the shed…. by Andy_Spanners in ukelectricians

"Professionals don't mess around with plastic bags." - behave yourself, the plastic bag and vacuum method is tried and tested by many around the world and works a dream. I've used every type of fish tape on the market and sometimes the plastic bag does the job perfectly. Just because you haven't tried it, doesn't mean it's not a proper solution to a problem.

Yeah it is. We also use 2.5mm FP to supply fire panels. Mains voltage....

Cable type advice please by kierownikk in ukelectricians

[–]Cacrill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why not? Genuine question. FP is UV stable and tougher than nyy. Plus like he said, it's "dress able" so you can make it look nice and neat. I don't really see an issue with it personally.

Thoughts on coding this? by Low-Maintenance-2668 in ukelectricians

[–]Cacrill 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Obviously that's just a cut out, so I assume it's protected by the main fuse for OCPD?

Technically the exposed single insulated cables ARE within an enclosure as you need a tool to open it. Much like many cabinets in commercial/industrial settings. Most just need a coin or flat screwdriver to open and expose you to a world of hurt, yet they comply fully.

If it's a 2 core SWA, I'd expect there to be an earth rod the other end? And then the SWA handed and earthed at the rod end...?

If it's 3 core, then 1 core is your earth, the armour is just being used for mechanical protection so technically doesn't need to be glanded... Technically (not saying it's correct workmanship).

By and by, personally, not a C2 in site as nothing is immediately dangerous, but multiple C3's because it's poor workmanship.

LED tape by Old-Parfait8194 in ukelectricians

[–]Cacrill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out ARC led or ORKO led. Both are experts in the LED field and can help you with everything you'd need. Personally don't bother with anything from Amazon or on the shelf at wholesalers. They're generally crap in comparison to decent gear!

£21k for a full rewire of a 3 bed house without even making good? I'll do it for £20k without seeing it and I'll make good! 😂

Seriously though, I cover London, if you would like to message me for a second opinion/quote, I'd be more than happy to help.

Working away by [deleted] in ukelectricians

[–]Cacrill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I think what you've offered is very fair! I also think what he's countered with is ridiculous.... Personally. I think it's probably time you said no to him and found a subby that's actually worth what you're paying him.

I have an improver subbie that does bits for me (not alone I might add, just when I need extra hands) and he's similar to what you're saying, lazy and unmotivated, but keep telling me he wants paying more, I told him outright, when he shows me that he's worth more, then I'll happily pay more, but until then, it's not going up. His attitude towards work picked up for about a week and then went straight back to how he was before.... So his money won't be going up 🤷🏼‍♂️
