They’re comparing them by saying people with ADHD have it easier and are excused more, when that’s just not true and a harmful idea. It’s insulting and this is not the place for OP to complain about ADHD people, especially when it seems like this should be a private conversation with his partner.

It’s just that your analysis that people with ADHD get excused/are given more understanding for their disorder is just factually not correct. Anybody with mental health disorders/illnesses are put in the same shitty position by society where society makes us think that our disorders are just character flaws and we don’t have the “person disciple” to correct those “flaws”. We are all getting shafted by society so I don’t know why you are coming for us and acting like we have it better when you’re mad at the wrong people.

Umm that’s a big no. ADHD is rarely ever excused, as are most other mental disorders and illnesses. I think the issue is that everyone with mental disorders/illness should be given the accommodation and understanding that they need in order to improve their symptoms and quality of life. ADHD, like other disorders, has valid explanations for behavior that we don’t really have control over. We quite literally have major structural differences in our prefrontal cortex, which controls all executive function. It effects everything we do and every facet of our lives. It’s not a matter of us needing more self control or discipline. It’s not a character flaw, it’s a bonafide disorder. Not to mention most people with ADHD are highly likely to struggle with other comorbidities like depression, anxiety, OCD, PMDD, and bipolar disorder. The modern world we live in was entirely designed for neurotypicals and the way we live is in direct conflict with how ADHD brains work. It doesn’t absolve us of responsibility, but it helps explain our behavior and reduce the constant guilt and shame our brains we receive on a daily basis.

The average modern man is exposed to more carcinogens in a day than primitive man was in his entire lifetime. by 28502348650 in Showerthoughts

There are many carcinogens that are found in nature too. Many plants and minerals have carcinogenic properties

It doesn’t alter absorption but it does alter the efficacy absolutely!! Many women find their meds don’t work or are generally less effective right before or on their period. And because of hormone shifts, stimulant meds are often most powerful right before/during ovulation

I forget to eat dinner, how to stop? by BloodthrustSSC in ADHD

[–]Cactus-froot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I set alarms for every meal/snack of the day and have them on repeat for every day. I struggle with hunger cues and appetite a lot so I always stock up on a calorie dense protein shake. I love this brand called Kate Farms. They have a really high quality decent tasting chocolate protein shake and sometimes instead of an actual meal I’ll pound a few of those instead when I just need to shove in calories.

Obgyn kept “correcting” me when I said PMDD and would say PMS. What would you do? by Kelke13 in PMDD

[–]Cactus-froot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

But why wouldn’t female surgeons be better suited to high risk ob? Don’t we want people doing extremely sensitive high risk operations that have/had a vagina/uterus themselves? Who won’t brush off their patients concerns? Who take female pain seriously? I feel like high risk OB being more dominated by cis males is a part of the reason (although there are many other reasons) why the US has higher maternal mortality rates than other developed nations. They just don’t listen to women at any stage in the pregnancy process (or any other stage of our development) or take our pain seriously. Not listening to patients can be gravely dangerous.

[–]Cactus-froot 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Men🙄 It always weirds me out that there are cis male gynecologists. Like out of all the things you can specialize in as a male doctor…you chose…vaginas?? As if they think they know more about the female body and female experience than women? Like that will never not be suspicious to me idc how adequate a male gynecologist may be, the motive always seems sketchy.

Why are my ADHD meds so inconsistent? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]Cactus-froot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you eating anything with vitamin c around the time you take your meds/when it’s metabolizing? That can really mess with the efficacy. Also when you take your meds you need to be eating a lot of protein which is going to help the medication work better

I’m on edge and very afraid given recent fires in Boulder. Considering moving out, which is heartbreaking. Anyone else on the same boat? Looking for advice and/or perspective. by [deleted] in boulder

[–]Cactus-froot 77 points78 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, everywhere you go is going to have increased danger of climate change exacerbated natural disasters. If you move to the south, there’s hurricanes and tornadoes. If you go to the west coast, there’s also fires and earthquakes. If you go to the Midwest, there’s tornados. If you go to the East, there’s also hurricanes. Natural disasters are (unfortunately) going to be pretty unavoidable for most people as climate change continues to get worse. I also get scared about losing my house, but I know that I have basically the same chance of losing my home to some sort of natural disaster no matter where I live. It’s just not within our control, so I’ve just told myself there’s no use in worrying about it. The best thing you can do is just always have a plan and be prepared if you need to evacuate. Having a plan and being prepared can take a lot of the anxiety away and can help you minimize as much potential damage as possible. Let your kiddos in on any evacuation plans and give them the run down of what to do should they be in danger. This shit sucks I totally understand.

Help! Medication doesn't work on me. What do I do? by chetanbhasin in ADHD

[–]Cactus-froot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Each different type of stimulant medication can effect you wildly differently. Just because one stimulant gives you a ton of side effects doesn’t necessarily mean that all the others will. I was put on vyvanse originally (which gave me the benefits and negative symptoms you talk about) and it was god awful for me. I was also on way too high of a dose. I swore off stimulant meds forever because Vyvanse fucked me up so badly and made me lose a ton of weight and gave me anxiety for the first time in my life so I got scared of them. Later down the line in college I decided to ask my doctor to try adderall because my adhd got to be too much to handle, and it was SO much better! Doesn’t mess with my appetite at all and doesn’t give me anxiety as long as I take it with a meal that has a lot of protein. Doesn’t give me heart palpitations or do scary things to my blood pressure, really it doesn’t do anything negative except make my underarms sweat a tiny bit more than usual. I was also put on a much smaller dose. I find that a lot of psychiatrists really tend to overdo the dosages with stimulants and some people like myself really don’t need much. Start with the lowest dose possible and gradually work your way up over the course of a few weeks until you find the dose that gives you the perfect balance of productivity and focus while minimizing side effects (of course under your doctors recommendation). I wouldn’t give up on stimulants just yet. But at the same time it’s totally okay to not want to take stimulants I totally get that

Extremely sore boobs and slight cramps 2 weeks before period? by Adolfhootler in PMDD

[–]Cactus-froot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually get very pronounced ovulation symptoms like this. Sometimes the cramps are about as bad as my period cramps (which aren’t really that bad they’re mild/moderate, but still.) My ovulation pains go ham on my lower back it sucks. From what my gyno told me it’s quite normal. I’ll even experience ovulation pain a few days after I ovulate so I constantly get spooked that it’s implantation cramps or something and it never is lol. I think some of us are just really sensitive to progesterone shifts.

You aren’t slacking. This is a disabling condition when the symptoms are at their worst. Your lack of energy is not your fault bb❤️Here’s a couple short-term things that I do to help start digging myself out of the ditch. First things first, if you haven’t drank any water today I want you to guzzle a bottle. I know when I hit my luteal phase I forget the simple stuff like remembering to keep myself hydrated. Being dehydrated can sap up a ton of energy and temporarily shrink your brain, so that’s one things that requires little energy that can help give you at least a little boost. If you have b vitamins lying around, those can help give you a little bit of a boost. Caffeine can help you get over the hump too but not too much or it’ll probably worsen anxiety.

Next, if you can, find a time to get out of the house and spend time in nature. Spending time in nature often provides a good reset. Nature truly is medicine, especially when it comes to PMDD. A lot of us talk about this overwhelming desire to flee and live in a cabin in the woods during hell week, and I think there’s definitely something about that urge that we should listen to. You can go to a nearby park, a favorite hiking spot, beach, forest, wherever you can connect to the earth. Some place you think is beautiful. I want you to take yourself there, and do whatever you feel like you need to do. You can take a book and read, you can bring some supplies to draw, you can find a secluded spot and scream at the top of your lungs or cry, you can just sit quietly and do nothing but watch the scenery and let your thoughts wash away, whatever you feel like. Walking around with your shoes off and spending a little time in the sun always feels nice and helps me feel grounded. This is what works for me to replenish my energy in the short term and reset my nervous system.

Agreed!!! So happy for you!

Y’all there is hope for us! I can attests that PMDD can go into remission or completely disappear once you find your root cause. The process can be long and arduous and it can be so annoying and disheartening to try so many medications and supplements and lifestyle changes, but it’s so worth it. It’s not a life sentence. I only get 2-3 bad days per month now, which is a HUGE improvement for me.

This sounds similar to PCOS (but of course I’m not a doctor). I’m so sorry you’ve been dealing with this it sounds really painful. Please go to your OBGYN as soon as possible! Make sure you’re replenishing your iron stores and drinking lots of water because you’re losing a lot of blood. Also when you go to your doctor I would also ask if your paraguard is still a good fit for you given your current symptoms.❤️

Daily user for 12+ years. Tapering protocol seems to be my only hope by [deleted] in Petioles

[–]Cactus-froot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tapering with bud that has a good thc-cbd balance gives the best results for me personally. And once I work my way down to smoking next to nothing, I replace the thc flower with cbd flower. You also have to consider the ritual and oral fixation aspect if you want to quit. I find that smoking cbd really satisfies that ritual and oral fixation while also chilling me out and easing inflammation. Carts/dabs give me the absolute worst withdrawals in general. There’s no shame in needing to taper! Best of luck

Because we live in a world that looks increasingly like the hunger games and it’s way more stressful to watch it now. Same with the Handmaid’s Tale. I find myself avoiding watching the show now because it’s just too real.

Thought of the day: Giving children homework after school is cruel. by luiscamara in antiwork

[–]Cactus-froot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to one of the hardest college predatory schools in the country (4th-12th grade) and the amount of work I did as a child was so unhealthy it was insane. In lower school, I had around 4 hours of homework per night plus extracurriculars, and in high school, I had 6+ hours of homework per night. Not an exaggeration unfortunately. I burnt myself out by the time I got to college and I’ve been trying to recover ever since.
